Also, Christmas was not the all-encompassing yearly hemorrhage of money that is expected of people celebrating Christmas today. The average Christmas gift for nearly everyone in the mid-to-late 19th century, at least in the US, and except for the very wealthy, was an orange. Thus ends our history lesson.
