August 15th was the day that President Richard M. Nixon announced that The United States of America would no longer redeem currency for gold or any other precious metal, forming the final step in abandoning the gold & silver standards. This gave the Federal Reserve control over U.S. currency. No federal agency has oversight authority over the Fed and currently it is not legal for congress to audit them. 279 representatives including Ron Paul of Texas are trying to pass H.R. 1207 which will allow congress to audit the actions of the Federal Reserve. The 20 senators are currently co-sponsoring S-604 that also gives congress authority to audit the fed.
