Day lilies (genus Hemerocallis) are joyful, eye pleasing plants that love the sun. They grow in sunny gardens, cultivated for their grace and beauty, or wild along roadsides, ditches and rural fence rows. These beautiful flowers are a gardener's delight, as they grow prolifically, bearing colorful flowers throughout the summer and into autumn. They're a favorite of horticulturalists and plant enthusiasts, and there are currently about 80,000 cultivars of the day lily ranging from bright yellow to golden orange to deep orange, pink, red, purple and burgundy, even some greens - almost any color except blue, which hybridists have not yet been able to create. Native to Asia, this cheerful plant now grows in most of the world. Day lily flowers are not only lovely to look at, they're tasty too, used in Chinese cuisine for dishes including Buddha's delight, daylily soup and hot and sour soup. The pistil extends the fartherst and it's hardest to see, all yellow. It has a nub at the end of its graceful stalk, which is slightly sticky and gathers pollen transferred from insects. The stamens are easier to see - the filaments in center with orange oblong heads. The orange is pollen. Insects carry the pollen from one flower to another, and it brushes off on the pistil.
