Young Mr. Lincoln--New Salem to Springfield Calend Calendar

This calendar celebrates a part of Lincoln's life from New Salem to Springfield. Photographs in Young Mr. Lincoln depict scenes that may have been viewed by Abraham Lincoln when in 1831, he first walked onto the dusty streets of New Salem, Illinois looking for a way to get his flatboat out of some trouble. He borrowed an auger from Henry Onstot's cooper shop and ended up staying. He enjoyed the commonplace split rail and picket fences, the dark shadows in the early morning, the large barns and businesses in hewn crafted log structures. Eventually he opened a business of his own, called the Lincoln-Berry store. James Herndon lived here, the cousin of Lincoln's future law partner William Herndon. These were formative years for Lincoln and by 1837 he moved to Springfield, where he developed his legal and negotiating skills in preparation for his future role as President of the United States.
