African Americans were not allowed to attend the Kentucky Derby before 1952 due to segregation laws in the United States. However, a group of African American businessmen and horse owners organized a boycott to protest segregation. As a result, the Kentucky Derby Association allowed African Americans to attend the event in 1952, and more than 4,000 African Americans attended.
