Ambrose Bierce was a writer of civil war fiction, ghost stories and satire. He was a harsh critic and employed dark themes in his fiction, thus earning the nickname 'Bitter Bierce'. Born in 1842, he served in the Civil War as a mapmaker and fought in the Battle of Shiloh. His best known short story is 'An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge'.
