Berber Ghorfa Libya Postcard

The Berber Ghorfa of Nalut is a magnificent ancient granary perched dramatically on a cliff edge in the Nafusa Mountains of western Libya. Constructed by the indigenous Amazigh (Berber) people centuries ago, this multi-story fortified complex consists of hundreds of individual vaulted storage chambers called ghorfas. These mud-and-stone cells were built on top of one another, forming an organic, honeycombed citadel that served as a communal treasury to safeguard grain, olive oil, and valuables from nomadic raids and harsh desert elements. Walking through the labyrinthine walkways and climbing the rustic palm-wood ladders reveals a marvel of vernacular architecture.
