Types of Holiday Invitations

  • Halloween Invitations: Leave guests with no doubt as to the dress code by providing clear instructions: "Costumes are required," "Costumes are encouraged but not mandatory," or "No costumes, please." Costume parties are fun but do require more preparation, so give guests around 6 weeks’ notice.
  • Thanksgiving Invitations: If you’re hosting a potluck and are expecting guests to contribute dishes, make that explicit on your invite: "Please bring your favorite dessert or side dish to share." This works well for low-key Friendsgiving parties, which have become more popular in recent years.
  • Hanukkah Invitations: Specify what type of party it is, such as a sit-down dinner or a kids’ event, and open with a greeting in Hebrew: "Chag Sameach!" or "Chag Urim Sameach!" Hanukkah parties usually take place after sundown anytime during the 8-day festival.
  • Christmas Invitations: Ask guests to bring their ugliest Christmas sweater: "Wear your tackiest sweater and join us for some festive fun." There’s less pressure on guests to look their best, and you can offer a prize for the most creative outfit.
  • New Year's Eve Invitations: New Year’s Eve parties can be pretty formal, glitzy affairs, so if that’s what you’re planning, be clear on the dress code: "Black tie requested." You could also send out a Save the Date ahead of time, especially if you’re combining your New Year’s party with a birthday or anniversary party.

Frequently Asked Questions about Holiday Invitations

What do you write on a holiday invitation?

Include a brief greeting, followed by the time, date, and venue, the reason for the event, and RSVP details. People may want to bring a gift to a Christmas or holiday party, so if you’d rather they didn’t, say so: "No gifts please; just bring yourselves!" Word the invite to directly address who’s being invited, too. Announce that "you and your family are invited…" if you want children and partners to attend, or mention that "you and a guest are welcome…" if they’re encouraged to bring plus-ones. You can also note that "this will be an adults-only party" if you want to keep expenses down or let guests relax without having to entertain kids.

How far in advance should I send out holiday invitations?

Holiday party invitations should be sent out 4 weeks in advance. For example, if you’re hosting an event in the first or second week of December, send your invites by the first or second week of November. This gives guests ample time to plan around work and other social commitments. For more formal events, 6 to 8 weeks’ notice is a better benchmark. Guests may want time to arrange outfits, book travel and accommodation, or schedule hair and makeup appointments. You may also need time to coordinate with venues and caterers and to finalize your headcount.

Should I call it a Christmas party or a holiday party?

In a family-and-friends context, and provided you know that your guests also celebrate Christmas, it’s okay to call it a "Christmas party." However, in a corporate setting, or when you’re not sure of everyone’s beliefs or backgrounds, "holiday party" is the more inclusive term. It covers the many events that take place throughout November and December, including Diwali and Kwanzaa, and is likely to make guests from those traditions feel more welcome. Many companies also hold their holiday parties in January or February, when their busiest season is over, so in that case you could say "New Year’s party," "winter party," or "end-of-year party."

For an office party, should I send printed or digital invites?

Printed invites can feel more intentional and considerate, but digital invites are a convenient and cost-effective choice for office parties, especially if you’re inviting 200 or 300 colleagues. If much of the company works remotely or on a hybrid schedule, handing out invites in person might not be practical, so emailing the invitation may be an easier way to communicate the key details. To purchase your design as an Instant Download, just select that option from the ‘Choose Your Format’ dropdown on a product page. The Zazzle Events app can also be used to distribute invites, issue auto-reminders, and set up a group chat. Your colleagues don’t need to download the app to respond, helping you collect RSVPs quickly.

What paper is used for your holiday invitations?

  • Basic Semi-Gloss (16 pt thickness, 400 GSM weight): This budget-friendly choice brings your design to life with a slight sheen. Images print crisply, with exceptional color and detail.
  • Signature Matte (18 pt thickness, 324 GSM weight): Our most popular paper type is also the easiest to write on, because of the uncoated texture. Compared to Basic Semi-Gloss, Signature Matte is 2 pts (0.002 inches) thicker, which gives it a more substantial, luxurious feel.
  • Signature Double-Thick (35 pt thickness, 650 GSM weight): Our thickest paper type is perfect for conveying the formality of an event. Because of the weightier paper, it’s also a sturdy surface to write on.
  • Premium Linen (16 pt thickness, 352 GSM weight): This paper is a good middle ground between Signature Matte and the heavier card stocks. Because the paper has a subtle woven texture, it feels like fabric to the touch.
  • Premium Pearlescent (16 pt thickness, 350 GSM weight): This paper has an eye-catching finish and feels like satin when you touch it. As you tilt the card, you’ll see the paper shimmer, which makes it particularly apt for festive designs.
  • Premium Soft Touch (18 pt thickness, 345 GSM weight): One of our newest paper types has a soft, velvet-like texture. It’s also one of two papers we use for foil invitations, along with Premium White (16 pt thickness, 360 GSM weight).

How long will the invites take to arrive?

With our fastest shipping speed, Zip PLUS, your invites can be with you in as little as 1 business day, including production. Lower tiers, on the other hand, will take more time: Standard (4 to 7 working days); Premium (2 to 3 working days); Express (1 to 2 working days); Zip (1 to 2 working days with expedited production). To get real-time estimates for your location and a breakdown of every delivery speed, click the link that reads ‘Order today with expedited shipping…’ on any page and enter your ZIP code. These estimates are more accurate as they also take specific production time frames into account. For example, an all-in-one invite takes 2 working days to manufacture, a foil invite takes 3, and a letterpress card takes 4.

How much do holiday invitations cost?

A single 5 x 7 holiday invitation with Square corners is about $2.71 on average. This will be higher if you choose another Corner Style, such as Scalloped edges (+$0.25) and a premium Paper Type (+$0.59 for Premium Linen), and this price is also subject to shipping costs and an optional Worry-Free Design Review and Delivery fee. However, customers rarely buy just one invite, and therefore a quantity discount is often applicable (for example: 20% for 40 flat, non-foil invites and 30% for 50 flat, non-foil invites). If a quantity discount isn’t applicable, a promotional discount is usually available. Subscribing to Zazzle Plus is another way to reduce the cost of your order, as you can save with a 30-day free trial and $10 account credit as a sign-up bonus.

What if something goes wrong with my invites and the party is close?

Ordering with enough time to spare is the best way to pre-empt any problems and ensure a smooth run-up to your event. That said, if your invitations arrive damaged, defective, or late, then the Zazzle Promise entitles you to a refund, replacement, or account credit within 30 days of delivery. If you opted for Worry-Free Design Review and Delivery at checkout, then it’s possible to request one of the same resolutions for any reason, within 60 days this time. Just contact our customer service team, and we’ll be happy to facilitate whichever you prefer. Alternatively, have your design emailed to you as an Instant Download, ready to share online or print in a local store.

Do you sell matching envelopes?

Yes. Scroll past the main product image to see the Shop This Collection menu, which allows you to order a complementary design on another product, and the Transfer Design to a Product menu, which lets you put your current design on another product, such as an envelope. If the product isn’t part of a matching collection, visit the envelopes page and click on the ‘Events and Occasions’ filter to narrow your search, first by ‘Holidays’ and then by a named event. Decorated envelopes with free Guest Addressing can also be added to your cart by clicking ‘Get Started’ next to the caption "Add Addressable Envelopes with FREE Contact Addressing." Our flat, magnetic, acrylic, and trifold invitations also come with complimentary blank white envelopes.
