Mugs

What Do Customers Say about Zazzle's Mugs?

Colleen K., ★★★★★

I couldn't be happier with my custom mug. The quality exceeded my expectations. The design came out exactly as requested, the colors are vibrant, and the mug itself feels sturdy and well made. You can tell real care went into the craftsmanship. It turned out even better than I imagined and makes the perfect personalized gift. I would absolutely order again and highly recommend Zazzle to anyone looking for a high quality custom piece.

Julie C., ★★★★★

I love that this mug can be fully customized with your own text and photos. I have created a wonderful holiday souvenir, but it would be perfect to create memories of any event or occasion.

Robin F., ★★★★★

Quality exceeded expectations and the glaze makes the good-sized mug very durable. The online design tool was easy peasy and showed the rotation effects for a design on a two-sided cup. Customer service was very responsive to my requests.

Popular Types of Mugs

  • Photo Mugs: The one to pick when the gift is really about showcasing a picture, whether that's a grandparent celebrating Father's Day or Mother's Day or a couple marking an anniversary. Collage designs let you use a whole year's worth of photos rather than choosing just one.
  • Travel Mugs: This is best for a commuter, a nurse on shift, or anyone who drinks their coffee in a car or on-site. Choose this over a ceramic mug for the busy parent.
  • Coffee Mugs: The standard ceramic mug, and the safest to pick when you need a White Elephant gift or don't know how someone takes their coffee, like a teacher or a new coworker.
  • Espresso Mugs: This type of mug is for the person with a proper machine at home and who takes their coffee short and strong. Buy these as a set of two or four rather than a singular cup, since espresso is usually served to multiple guests after dinner.
  • Face Mugs: The gift for a friend who'll find their own face funny, or for a pet owner who talks about their animal more than anything else. Use a close, well-lit head shot rather than a full-length photo, since the face will be scaled up.

Frequently Asked Questions about Mugs

Are Zazzle mugs dishwasher and microwave safe?

Our ceramic mugs are safe in both the dishwasher and the microwave. The design is fused onto the surface of the mug by a process called sublimation, which uses heat to bond the ink into the coating of the mug. This means it isn't pasted on top like a sticker, so a wash cycle shouldn't lift it. Travel mugs and any style with a metal or acrylic body should be hand washed only and not go in the microwave.

Will the design fade, peel, or scratch off over time?

No. Because the image is bonded into the mug's coating rather than sitting on the surface, there's no edge that could catch and start peeling, and therefore no 'layer' that could be sratched off. Customers have reported Zazzle's mugs still looking sharp after years of daily use and regular dishwasher cycles. If you want to be particularly careful with a sentimental mug, skip the sanitize cycle and let it air dry.

What's the difference between a standard, latte, jumbo, espresso, and travel mug?

Our mugs differ in capacity, shape, and functionality. A standard ceramic mug holds 11 oz to 15 oz and suits a regular cup of coffee or tea, whereas a latte mug, which is taller and wider for milky drinks, holds 12 oz to 17 oz. An oversized or jumbo mug at 20 oz is for anyone who refills twice before 9am or who adds a lot of cream, milk, or sugar to their drink. Espresso cups hold a single short shot at 6 oz. Travel mugs are 14 oz and are insulted with a lid, keeping your coffee warm for longer.

What photo resolution do I need for a mug to print well?

Upload your photo as a JPEG or PNG at 200ppi (pixels per inch) or higher for the sharpest print. Many mug designs repeat the image on both sides, so check each side in the design tool rather than only the side facing you. The design tool will flag any image that's too low resolution for the size you've picked in the design tool and again in your cart. Photos taken on a recent camera or phone are usually fine, but screenshots and images saved from social media aren't recommended as they tend to be too low resolution.

Is there a minimum order, and can I order one first to check it?

There's no minimum quantity, so order a single mug and you can get a printed sample of your exact photo, text, and mug style. The price per mug drops 10% if you order 5 or more, and drops 20% after ordering 10 or more, so checking one first and then ordering the rest in a single batch costs less than buying them piecemeal. Plenty of customers do this before buying a set for a family or a team. Before you order at all, the design tool renders your mug on the screen and rotates it, so you can see how the design sits around the curve and across both sides. Add our Worry-Free Design Review and Delivery to your order and you're covered for a replacement, credit, or refund within 30 days if you're not happy with it for any reason at all.

How long do custom mugs take to make and arrive?

We make our ceramic mugs in 2 to 3 business days, with Standard, Premium and Express shipping available on top of that. Enter your ZIP code on any product page and click the date above the 'Qty:' button for an estimate to your address. To work out your last safe order date, start from the day of the birthday or occasion, subtract the production and delivery estimate, and add a few days if you want the mug in hand early enough to gift wrap it. Larger orders can add 2 or 3 days in production, so factor that in if you're buying in bulk.

What is a color morphing mug and how does it work?

A color morphing mug initially looks like a blank or plain mug, but add some coffee or hot drink and your design, pattern, or photo is revealed. The heat-sensitive coating resets as the mug cools down, so the reveal happens every time rather than just once. Pick a design with a strong color, since the finer details can be harder to read as the coating clears.

What other drinkware works as a gift alongside a mug?

  • Tumblers: Tumblers are made of double-walled stainless steel rather than ceramics, so they hold an iced coffee cold for hours; in a mug, the drink would turn lukewarm. This is the right pick for someone who drinks their coffee iced, or who carries it between rooms and meetings.
  • Water Bottles: A bottle is the right call for someone who frequents the gym, or who is on site all day. If they're a coffee drinker too, buy both, since a bottle covers hydration and a mug covers the morning energy ritual; neither does the other's job.
  • Wine Glasses: Order these as well as a mug and you'll cover both the start and the end of the day. Choose from stemmed, stemless, or a printed rocks glass. The wider bowl on a stemless glass, in particular, helps the wine hold its legs and aroma.
