Catherine of Alexandria Button

Noble, virtuous Greek maiden, saint and martyr. Converted to Christianity upon receiving a vision of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ child. She challenged the emperor and converted many pagan philosophers, the empress and her guards. Pigeons fed her, while she was starved in prison. She was beaten, ordered to die on the wheel, and beheaded when her prayers shattered the wheel. Angels took her body and flew it to Mount Sinai, where monks dedicated a monastery in her honor. Mohammed ordered its protection for all time. She was among the advisers of Saint Joan of Arc. She is the patron saint of maidens, students, teachers, librarians, secretaries, nurses, millers, potters, mechanics, theologians, and lawyers.
