Claude Monet - Vetheuil, Sunset Ceramic Tile

Vétheuil, Sunset (Vétheuil, soleil couchant), 1901 - Claude Monet, oil on canvas. Claude Monet (Paris, 1840 - Giverny, 1926) was a French Impressionist painter. In the summer of 1901 Monet rented a modest house at Lavacourt, across the Seine from Vétheuil, where he had lived more than twenty years earlier. He drove there from Giverny in the automobile he had bought the previous winter, and from the balcony he began fifteen paintings of the same view on almost square canvases. He kept the riverbank, village and church nearly constant while the light changed from canvas to canvas. This sunset version belongs to that deliberately systematic campaign. In 1902 it was bought for the great collector Count Isaac de Camondo, who later bequeathed his collection to the French State.
