Cooper's Hawk Magnet

We love our Cooper's Hawks here in the Peaceable Kingdom, although peace is often shattered once Mr. Cooper Hawk makes a visit. A very photogenic bird of prey, this particular raptor has been visiting us since he was quite young. He'll roost in either the Maple trees or Pines, skillfully hiding himself until either pigeons, doves or european starlings arrive, then its down to business. While the activities can often be rather gruesome and disturbing, one has to realize that the result is just a part of nature and the circle of life. Cooper's Hawks are also known as the Big Blue Darter, Chicken Hawk, Hen Hawk, Mexican Hawk, Quail Hawk, Striker and Swift Hawk. Once a Cooper's Hawk spots its prey, he'll fly at breakneck speed and capture his meal with his strong talons, squeezing the unfortunate bird until is succumbs. Many a Cooper's Hawk has injured itself severely by practicing these kind of aerial acrobatics, striking its bones against branches and breaking or fracturing them. It's all in a days work for this beautiful and talented flyer.
