Custom House, Salem, MA There has been a Custom House in Salem since 1649, collecting taxes on imported goods. This is the last of 13 Custom Houses in the city built in 1819. It symbolized the Federal Government's presence in Salem, requiring the architects to design an impressive building. The wooden eagle was placed on the roof in 1820. (The current eagle is a fiberglass copy of the original exhibited inside the building.) Nathaniel Hawthorne worked at the U.S. Custom House in Salem for three years. This period inspired his classic novel, The Scarlet Letter.
