Mary and Her Son Flanked by Archangels, Apostles and a Saint. The Virgin Mary, Mother of God, as a Black Madonna is seated with the Christ Child Jesus on her lap. The child holds her chin in affection. To her right and left are archangels. In the alternate panel are the twelve apostles and a saint riding a horse. Ethiopia was the first country to adopt Christianity. Christianity dates to the first century AD in Ethiopia. This illuminated manuscript is from the late 15th century, Tegray, Ethiopia .
