Card for yuletide greetings honoring the turning of the wheel of the year, with Portia's "Freya at her Spinning Wheel" (c. 2007. Traditional and digital media.) In ancient Europe, the Norse goddess Freya (or Frigga) sat at her spinning wheel weaving the fates. The celebration to mark the spinning of that great wheel was called Yule, based on the Norse word "Jul," meaning "wheel." The spinning "Wheel of Fate," held by Freya in her aspect as the Crone reminds us of the cycle of the seasons and the continuity of life.
