Gustav Klimt - The Park Button

The Park, painted around 1909-1910 in oil on canvas by Austrian Symbolist Gustav Klimt. A dense canopy of leaves fills almost the entire square picture, while trunks and a narrow strip of ground survive only along the lower edge. Klimt used a square viewfinder to isolate landscape motifs, and here the close crop turns foliage into an almost abstract mosaic of tiny brushstrokes. The limited depth and all-over pattern push the landscape toward abstraction while remaining rooted in the direct observation of trees and light.
