Working with Images in the Design Tool- Desktop Version

This guide is for computers. For phones, see Working with Images - Mobile and App Version.

Upload your images

1. Click Uploads in the left toolbar.
2. Choose where your photos are:
   • Upload from computer – pick files. You can also drag files anywhere onto the Design Tool.
   • Upload from your phone – scan the QR code with your phone and pick photos. Click Done uploading when finished.
3. Your uploads appear below the buttons. Click one to add it to your design.

Replace a photo in a design

Click Edit in the left toolbar, then Change image under the photo you want to replace.

Image tools

Click an image on your design to select it. Its toolbar appears above the design.

• Change image – swap in a different photo.
• Remove BG – remove the background behind the main subject.
• Eraser – erase parts of the image by hand.
• Crop – trim the image.
• Duplicate and Delete (icons).
• – / + – make it smaller or larger.
• Fit – fit the whole image in the design area. This can leave empty space.
• Fill – fill the design area. Parts of the image may be cut off.
• Alignment – align, flip, resize, and rotate.
• Effects – aspect ratio, opacity, tiling, filters, and removing white.
• Selling Options – for designers selling on Zazzle. Make the image a template customers can replace.

Resize and move

• Resize – drag a corner handle to keep the shape. Drag a side handle to stretch it. Hold Shift while dragging to switch the aspect ratio lock.
• Move – drag the middle of the image. Alignment guides help you line it up.

Crop a photo

1. Select the image and click Crop, or double-click the image.
2. Drag the corner handles to change what shows. Drag the photo to reposition it.
3. Click outside the image, or click Crop again, to finish. If a crop window opens, click Apply.

Effects

Select the image and click Effects.

• Aspect ratio – Freeform, 1:1, 3:4, 4:3, 9:16, or 16:9.
• Opacity – make the image see-through.
• Tiling – repeat the image as a pattern.
• Filters – apply a color filter.
• Remove white from image:
  • Never – keep the image as is (default).
  • Background only – remove white around the edges and keep white inside the image.
  • All white in image – remove every white area.

Align, flip, and rotate

Select the image and click Alignment. You can align, space items evenly, flip, resize, and rotate 15° at a time or by an exact angle.

Masks

1. Select a shape and an image together.
2. Click Mask. The image takes the shape.
3. To reposition the image inside the shape, double-click it or click Edit Mask in the toolbar. Click outside to finish.
4. To undo, select it and click Unmask.

Blurry or low-resolution images

Low-resolution images can print blurry. If an image is too small for its size on the product, you'll see a warning on the Review step. Make the image smaller or use a larger file.

Some images can be sharpened. Select the image and click Upscale if you see it. Then choose Use New Image or Use Original Image.

Locked images

Designers sometimes lock images so they stay in place. To unlock one:

1. Click Layers in the left toolbar.
2. Hover over the image and click its lock icon.

If the item is grayed out and the lock can't be clicked, the designer has turned off changes to it. Contact the designer through chat for help.
