Imagine being an unknown academic laboring in obscurity because they don't give faculty positions to troublemakers (or as we call it: "Tuesday"). Your obscure laboring produces a correction to Newtonian mechanics - the first in over two centuries - making it consistent with the recently discovered laws of electrodynamics. Happy with this result, you turn to the ramifications of your new theory, you know, to bulk up the discussion section of the paper. That's when the wheels come off. Your new theory predicts mass and length are no longer constant. Your new theory predicts an absolute upper limit to velocity. Your new theory puts the final nail in the coffin of simultaneity (after building the coffin, stuffing simultaneity in the coffin, and putting all the other nails in the coffin). And last but not least, your new theory predicts there is unimaginable energy woven into the very fabric of matter, energy so Brobdingnagian that the release of even a tiny fraction of it - say, the fraction that would fit in the bomb bay of a B-29 - would be enough to make an entire city vanish. At this point, most of us would take our new theory to the alley out back and douse it with lighter fluid, quietly kicking the ashes into the neighbor's yard after we killed it with fire (along with your career, your youthful optimism, and your dreams of escaping the mean streets of Circle Pines). Oh well, you mutter to yourself, there's always the Army.
