Why Ladybugs Bring Good Luck: The idea that ladybugs bring good luck is largely based on their appetite for eating other insects ie: aphids. The folklore is that in the Middle Ages crops were failing due an insect infestation. Farmers prayed to the Virgin Mary asking for relief and she sent to them a red bodied beetle which consumed the harmful insects and saved the crops. As the Virgin Mary was also known as "Our Lady" the beetles were referred to as "Our Lady's Bug" which over time became their current name of Ladybug. So it is that their benefit to gardens, crops and orchards earned the ladybug the reputation of bringing good luck to those it visits.
