Mimbres Bat-Raven Tile

Art based closely on a Mimbres bowl. Between approximately 200 and 1130 CE the Mimbres people lived in villages located in what today is southern New Mexico. They made astonishingly beautiful and dramatic painted designs of animals, people and dazzling geometry on ceramic bowls which were generally about 11" in diameter. At about 1130 CE the Mimbres mysteriously seem to have disappeared but thousands of their painted bowls have survived. This particular design shows what is clearly a bat but if you look carefully at the head you can see that on one side it has a beaked profile of a bird which could be a raven or maybe a crow.
