I have lived in North Holland and love those ancient mills, especially at the sunset. Windmills are an Old Holland tourist attraction – a quaint symbol of Dutch tradition – and visiting one makes for a lovely day out. Kinderdijk is also the site of the old St Elizabeth's flood, where Kinderdijk actually means 'Children's Dyke' after a cradle had been found bobbing up and down in the water after the flood with, what is assumed, the house cat keeping the cradle steady. Dutch started building windmills to use them grinding grains In the past, ancient people build windmills to take advantage of the change and generate power. However, due to the special geographical features of the Netherland, Dutch people built windmills to pump water out of the lowlands and back into the rivers beyond the dikes to deal with flooding issues. In addition to those, windmills have been also used to power many other industrial processes, including paper mills, threshing mills, and to process oil seeds, wool, paints, and stone products.
