Painted Hills Postcard

The Painted Hills are a premier geological marvel located within the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. These rolling mounds are world-renowned for their vibrant, stratified layers of gold, black, and deep crimson soil, which shift in intensity depending on the moisture and the angle of the sun. The colors represent distinct geological eras, created by volcanic ash deposits and ancient climate changes that occurred over 30 miles ago. Visitors are treated to a surreal landscape that feels like an alien planet or a colossal, weathered canvas. Short, accessible boardwalks like the Painted Cove Trail allow explorers to get up close to the fragile, clay-like textures without disturbing the 'dirt.' The area is particularly magical during the late afternoon, when the long shadows accentuate the rhythmic curves of the hills and the colors achieve their most saturated, glowing brilliance.
