More's refusal to endorse the king's actions led to his resignation as Lord Chancellor in 1532. The turning point in More's life came in 1534 when he refused to swear an oath recognizing Henry VIII as the Supreme Head of the Church of England. This principled stand led to More's arrest, trial, and ultimately his execution on July 6, 1535. Thomas More was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 1935, recognizing his martyrdom for his religious beliefs.
