The surface is slick, so things can slide around on it, as I learned while spilling a glass of wine. The wood was somewhat disappointing, having dark streaks in it. Screws are exposed on the end, but at least they are brass colored, so they aren't too bad. What it really needs is a means of hanging it on a wall, so that it can be displayed and out of the way, yet readily available for use. I ended up taking the it apart and machining a groove in the top rail to accept a picture hanger; I bent the hanger slightly to fit around he rail.
