My husband struggled with PTSD since his first deployment in 2003. After each additional deployment it got a little worst. Deployments happened every other year with one year home and one year gone until 2009 when we took a break in a remote training base in Utah. Then he went back to the regular side of the army and deployed again in 2011 to Afghanistan. This one pushed him over his limits and his PTSD began to hit an all time high. 10 years and 5 deployments with no mental health “therapy” took its toll and he finally retired from military service after 25 years as an Army medic and then later, Army infantry first sergeant. He struggled to find treatment, both through the VA and through the civilian sector. Even after treatment there were still issues that he couldn’t manage with medication and therapy alone so we sought out getting him a service dog. After talking with many companies we realized how difficult it was to get a service dog. Most of the veteran programs wanted you to travel alone to another state for 3 weeks and he just couldn’t do it. So we stumbled on a local trainer and a new journey began. After he worked with the trainer to certify his own service dog a passion was ignited. Ever since then Shane has enjoyed becoming a canine behaviorist and using those skills to help others train their own service dogs. His passion has led him to do this for little to no cost to the client and he works with clients who just need to solve a few behavior issues to help offset the cost of his hearts mission. Proceeds from these sales will go to support the service dog training program that he offers to clients so that he can continue to offer this service at rock bottom prices.
