By now most of us know that toxic chemicals have become ubiquitous in our environment and that their indiscriminate use has taken a terrible toll on honeybees, wild bee species, butterflies, and other beneficial insects as well as other creatures above them in the food chain, including people. * * * However, many homeowners are still unaware of the fact that the toxic chemical pesticide-based lawn and tree "care" products and services that they use are hastening the precipitous decline--and perhaps even the extinction--of the pollinators upon whose ecosystem services we absolutely depend for approximately one third of all the food we eat. * * * Toxic chemical pesticides are out-of-sight and thus out-of-mind for many people. Each of us can become part of the solution by refusing to use toxic chemical pesticides and by encouraging our neighbors to do the same. Please check with your local recycling facility for further information. We request that you choose the metal stakes and NOT the black plastic stakes. The latter are made from a hard-to-recycle combination of fiberglass and other materials. The metal stakes are recyclable and visually much more appealing than the non-recyclable black plastic.
