This surrealistic piece by Kathys Gallery is entitled "Skin Deep." It depicts a young woman wearing a mask. The work is both feminine and mystical but with a strong political undertone. Surrealism was a cultural and political movement that began in the early 1920's. Developed largely out of the Dada activities during World War 1, the movement started primarily in Paris and spread across the globe affecting visual arts, literature, film, music, and philosophy. Freedom from false rationality, restrictive customs, and structures was an important aspect of the movement.
