Three Dancers | Edgar Degas

Danseuses dans une salle d’exercice (Trois Danseuses) (1873), also known as Three Dancers in an Exercise Room, by French Impressionist artist Edgar Degas (1834–1917), depicts three ballerinas gathered in a dance studio during rehearsal. Bathed in soft natural light, the dancers appear absorbed in their practice, capturing the quiet concentration and physical discipline behind the art of ballet. Degas uses expressive brushwork, subtle color variations, and an intimate composition to convey the atmosphere of a working dance room rather than the glamour of a stage performance. The delicate movement of the figures and the interplay of light and shadow give the scene a sense of spontaneity and everyday life. This early ballet painting reflects Degas’s fascination with dancers and his ability to transform ordinary rehearsal moments into elegant works of Impressionist art.
