AUGUST'S MOMENTS

Moments of creativity, celebration, trends, and unique occasions. For every day of the week.

Summertime Spooky – An Early Start on Halloween

Tuesday, Aug 31st, 2021

It’s August 31st and you know what that means- there’s only two months to Halloween. Fun fact, according to the National Retail Federation's Halloween data center, almost as many people shop for Halloween in September as they do in October. You might think that you have plenty of time and there's no need to get started now, but if you're anything like us, then you know how quickly October can sneak up. Plus, those prize-winning costumes won't create themselves. After all, creativity can't be rushed. Whether your plans will be virtual or IRL, it never hurts to get a head start. Stock up on that candy and beat the rush for decor.

The internet already has their predictions for 2021's buzziest Halloween costumes, lots of pop-culture inspiration, including Wanda from Wanda Vision, the cast of Friends making a comeback, and all things Bridgerton. Our favorite idea though, might be a couples costume of Kong vs. Godzilla. Just saying. But don't delay; your costume and creativity await.

Beach Please – It's National Beach Day

Monday, Aug 30th, 2021

Hello National Beach Day, we love you so much!

National Beach Day is a day that celebrates our beaches and oceans. Sadly, about 260 million tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean each year. That's enough to fill up five grocery bags for every foot of coastline in the world. National Beach Day isn't just about going to the beach and having fun- it's also a chance to do something good for our planet by taking care of our shorelines. There are many ways you can support and enjoy National Beach Day by getting outside and joining your community on a coastal cleanup adventure! Check out The Surfrider Foundation for a great start.

If you're landlocked, there are ways to get involved by cleaning up a waterfront near you. National Beach Day is a great way to enjoy and advocate for our beaches and waterfronts to preserve our planet.

Feel So Fine – It's National Red Wine Day

Saturday, Aug 28th, 2021

National red wine day is a red-letter day for red wine lovers. Today, we all have the opportunity to celebrate red wine and its many benefits. Of course, not everyone enjoys red wine as much as others do. But if you're of legal age and wish to partake, then it's time to crack open your favorite bottle!

Today, red wine lovers can enjoy a glass or two of red wine guilt-free. No need to worry about the calories or sugar content! There is a ton of research out there about the benefits of red wine in moderation, not that we needed any convincing. What we are curious about, though, are trends in wine consumption in general. The most credible source we could find is YouGov.com and their survey of American wine habits. Keep in mind this was pre-pandemic. We happily volunteer ourselves for an updated survey should they feel the need. Until then, it's red wine o' clock.

Because You Want To – It's National Just Because Day

Friday, Aug 27th, 2021

Today, there's no reason for the season, and there's no explaining or rationale required. Because today is the day, you can do something just because you want to; it's National Just Because Day! While the specific origins of National Just Because Day are unknown—it supposedly originated in 1958 with Joe Goodwin from Los Gatos, CA, as a family holiday that grew into a widespread annual celebration. It doesn't matter the origins, because National Just Because Day isn't about anything in particular. It's just an excuse to do something fun.

Or one other mission for today; use it as a way to share a random act of kindness. This Zazzle Ideas article has 50 random acts of kindness that you can do, just because.

Today is Women's Equality Day

Thursday, Aug 26th, 2021

On Women’s Equality Day, we celebrate the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which granted women the right to vote in 1920. Women first began campaigning for suffrage in 1848 and were finally successful after years of struggle when Tennessee ratified a state amendment on August 18, 1920—the 36th state needed for ratification. Although the 19th Amendment was ratified on August 18, 1920, it was not until its certification by proclamation – meaning that two-thirds of states had confirmed it, a week later, on August 26, that it was officially enacted. In 1971, the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as Women’s Equality Day.

Women’s Equality Day reminds us of the challenges women overcame to advance equal rights between genders continuously. Women’s Equality Day is an opportunity to celebrate the challenges, triumphs, and ongoing efforts in the battle for equality. Nevertheless, they persisted.

Collegiate Creativity

Tuesday, Aug 24th, 2021

It's that time of year again! The dorms are filling up with that back-to-campus energy. With limited space and a tight budget, developing dorm room décor ideas on the fly can be challenging. Two words: get artsy! Dorm walls are a blank slate waiting to be filled with creativity. But not with another Matisse or band poster; you want to make your dorm space unique and personalized. Collages, DIY canvas art, and macrame wall art are just a few of the many ways to make your dorm space reflect you.

If DIYs are too much work, try putting up some words of inspiration or drawings to fill that empty wall with personality! Come up with your own unique quote. Capture your power words for the school year or just say 'Hello.' Even better, try a decor swap-trade dorm room decor with your friends for a thrifty, environmentally sound approach to doing it up in style. Regardless of your aesthetic, you'll find plenty of wall art on Zazzle to fill up your new room!

Not only is it back to school time, it's time to decorate those dorm walls with new art!

Bee Cool for National Honey Bee Awareness Day

Saturday, Aug 21st, 2021

National Honey Bee Awareness Day is a day to celebrate honey bees and the important role they play in our lives. To celebrate National Honey Bee Awareness Day, here are some facts: As food producers, honey bees pollinate about one-third of all crops grown in North America. Honeybees can fly up to 15 miles per hour and cover as many as 5 miles in their lifetime. They're also capable of identifying colors, shapes, patterns, and smells. Bees can see a color imperceptible to humans and known as “bee’s purple”. It is a combination of yellow and UV light. Hungry bees bite plants' leaves to make them flower 30 days sooner than they otherwise would.

To celebrate this wonderful insect and its hive, spread the word about bees, plant some flowers in your backyard to support bees, learn more about them, or even adopt a bee colony!

Drink On Up

Tuesday, Aug 17th, 2021

Reusable water bottles matter for many reasons. They keep us hydrated and healthy, save the environment from pollution, and help us avoid spending too much on bottled water. What's more, is that there are so many great options out there! The average person needs to drink at least eight glasses of water a day, but that's not always easy.

Some things we consider when buying a water bottle:

– How much does it hold? – What type of material is it made from? – How well does the lid close? – Is there an attached straw or spout?

If you're looking to be eco-friendly and drink on up, Zazzle has you covered with our selection of custom water bottles designs.

Go Left!

Friday, Aug 13th, 2021

Welcome to the day where the 90% can honor the 10% who must live their lives in a right-handed world. (By all counts, only 10% of the global population is left-handed). The day was created in 1976 by the founder of Lefthanders International, Inc., Dean R Campbell. We've come a long way from left-handers being called witches; today, we might call them President (Reagan, Bush Sr, Clinton, and Obama all left handed) or Oprah or Ruth Bader Ginsburg or Paul McCartney. Southpaws are special so celebrate them today!

Happy National Left Handers Day!

If you need any more convincing on why this matters, permit us to share this article with 13 reminders of why elephants are special. One such fact- elephants are "highly intelligent animals with complex emotions, feelings, compassion, and self-awareness (elephants are one of the very few species to recognize themselves in a mirror!)." While we heart elephants all year long, let's take some time today to remember why.

The Perseids are Peaking

Wednesday, Aug 11th, 2021

Look up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, it's a Perseid meteor shower. Every year around this time, the Earth passes through a trail of cosmic dust left by the comet Swift-Tuttle. The result is an annual display of meteors during a concentrated period; this year, the prediction for these peak days is a possible 60 meteors per hour. For more insight into the showers and how best to view them, check out this Space.com article.

Back to School for All

Tuesday, Aug 10th, 2021

Back to school is on, and some specific trends are emerging as many get ready to go back into the classroom.

One trend includes gender-neutral colors for folders and binders, including primary colors and geometric patterns. Also trending are school accessories with statements of inclusivity and kindness, which are right on with good vibes for the new school year. Also, noteworthy, resealable, and sanitary ways to have snacks, lunch, and other items on hand since school lunches might look a bit different at least to start. And hand sanitizer and masks are coming with the kids, big and small, coupled with bags within bags- i.e., the pouch for the backpack that has the mask and sanitizer.

Here at Zazzle, we have plenty of back-to-school must-haves, not to play favorites, but we do think our selection of personalized backpacks make all kinds of amazing first impressions combined with practical scholar vibes. All in all, this is set to be a record year for back-to-school shopping AND back to cool vibes.

Sharing Gold, Together

Monday, Aug 9th, 2021

The Olympics are over, and while many things felt challenging or just strange about these Games, just as many things were inspiring and heartening. It seems plenty of these inspiring moments were a result of a new generation of athletes breaking traditional molds and defying expectations. Moments like sharing gold medals, cheering on competitors, 13-year-olds competing, a delegation comprised of refugees, important decisions about prioritizing mental health, and knitting cozies for medals in the stands (we see you, Tom Daley). The spirit of competition was not diminished, just the winning at all costs mentality.

If you weren't aware, the International Olympic Committee added a new word to the Olympic motto this year. The original motto originated in the 19th century and translates to Faster, Higher, Stronger from the original Latin. The new word, Together, was intended to capture the humanity of the games with a focus on solidarity. Faster, Higher, Stronger, Together; we welcome the change and celebrate the new generation of athletes who embodied the spirit. Now, on to the Paralympics, which start in two weeks.

Stuck in the Middle with You – Middle Child's Day

Sunday, Aug 8th, 2021

There's much pop psychology fuss about birth order, but perhaps no child has had more analysis than the middle one. There's even a label – middle child syndrome, which is why middle children deserve a day all their own. It is worth sharing, though, that there has been some more recent debunking of stereotypes stating that middle children are more neglected and therefore more likely to act out and be unmotivated, amongst other long-held claims.

This article from Business Insider captures more recent insights from researchers highlighting the positive advantages and traits of middledom, including that middle children get along well with many different personality types. Famous middle children include Katy Perry, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, Mark Zuckerberg, Miley Cyrus, Madonna, Warren Buffet, and Amy Schumer. That's some exciting company to keep as a middle child. While we saw a petition online for a National Oldest Child Day, we think Middle Childs Day might be the only day with staying power. Take that, siblings!

Thursday is Thor's Day

Thursday, Aug 5th, 2021

Yes, it's true, the day of the week, Thursday, is named after Thor. This origin story is far more involved since, in the original Roman calendar, the 4th day of the week was named after Jupiter, the Roman god of thunder and sky. During the Roman occupation of Germanic lands, they borrowed the calendar of Thunor's Day, which was associated with the Norse god of thunder, which was shortened to Thor's Day. It's why romance languages of Roman origin use elements of Jupiter's Day in those languages, i.e., Jeudi in French. And why Germanic languages all use a derivation of Thor's Day. Thor has been part of lives well before Marvel came into the picture. This Dictionary.com article has all the details on how the name came into being.

If you're a super fan of Marvel Comic's Thor, we have some great classic designs, you can personalize!

Sister, Sister – It's Sisters Day

Sunday, Aug 1st, 2021

Today's the day to celebrate the unique bond between sisters. Elsa and Anna, Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy; whether it's two sisters or four-plus, there are numerous books, movies, and works of art that capture the special bond. When we think about reflections on sisterhood in the media, what comes to mind instantly is the iconic photo-essay book from the 90s, called 'Sisters.' Created by journalist Carol Saline and Pulitzer prize-winning photojournalist Sharon Wohlmuth, the book full of photos and essays broke publishing records by being the first-ever photo essay book to be on the NYT bestsellers list for 63 weeks and is often cited as being a game-changer in the world of photo-essay books.

In 2004, a 10th-anniversary edition was published with updates from the sisters featured on the passage of time. While the book spawned many imitators, it's powerful to remember that before there was instant photo sharing and captions on devices we carry with us, a book of photos and essays celebrating the bond between sisters was shattering records and celebrating the bonds of sisterhood.

Happy Sisters Day! Celebrate the bond between sisters today & every day!
