A de-Sign of Things to Come!

Saturday, April 27th, 2024

Think of the word ‘design,’ and what might come to mind are interior decorators renovating your home, graphic artists preparing advertisements and promotional material, or – if we’re very lucky and have been plugging it enough via our Today’s Moments – our state-of-the-art design tool. However, the concept of design encompasses far more than branding opportunities and website development. Indeed, everything that’s manufactured – whether it’s the chair you’re sitting on or the phone you’re reading this on – has also been planned out and designed, at least to some degree.

International Design Day (previously known as World Design Day and World Graphics Day) was initiated by the International Council of Design for two reasons: one, to commemorate the founding of the Council on April 27, 1963; and two, to "recognize the value of design and its capacity to effect change." Shrewd, considerate design can make the world more inclusive and convenient; rushed, uninformed design can make everyday tasks that much more complicated or awkward. Think of a workplace that isn’t wheelchair friendly, a cinema or restaurant that doesn’t allocate more space for female toilets, or clothing that only allows for a narrow range of body types.

Every International Design Day has a theme, and this year’s is "Be Kind." In other words, if we’re designing something that a lot of people will use or need, we should try to be considerate and open-minded in its conceptualization and execution. Or, to assume another interpretation, we should try and design something on Zazzle’s custom product page that we can kindly gift to a friend or family member!

You may or may not know this, but Zazzle sells personalized leggings. That's right, you read that correctly: leggings that you can customize to match your outfit, showcase your company logo, or act cute with your pet's face emblazoned as a pattern all over them.

If you've ever wondered what makes leggings so special, we can tell you they've been a versatile fashion piece since the 1960s. It has outlasted various changes in style and trends, and it's as popular now as it was then. Our experts have even created an article detailing the "Top 5 Trends for Leggings" for you to read through.

Many women may have dozens of black leggings filling up their closet drawers, but if you still don't have enough, you can use Zazzle to bulk up your wardrobe with comfortable leggings for every occasion. You can also make a statement this 4th of July with red, white, and blue leggings. They could even come in handy if you're getting married and are looking for something for your bridesmaids to wear while getting ready! Regardless of the event, we have you covered (pun intended)!

Living in a Material World

Thursday, April 25th, 2024

While tapestries were once the preserve of regal houses and imperial palaces, due to the high-quality fabric and expensive cost involved in making them, in the 21st century, they’re a lot easier to find. Indeed, tapestries are now an economical and widely available – and, as we’ll see, multifunctional – piece of wall décor. Lighter and more manageable than heavy framed art but with more texture and dynamism than posters and canvas prints, they’re a beautiful way to depict your favorite painting or pattern.

Tapestries are so versatile, in fact, that they can even serve as topics for blog posts – as has happened over on Zazzle Ideas, in our "Alternative Ways to Use a Wall Tapestry" article. We explain that, aside from helping to make your bed cozier or to serve as a partition in a room, they can also be brought to the beach as a makeshift blanket, on a camping trip as an extra layer of protection for your tent, or to your wedding as a photo backdrop. We’ve also showcased some of our most acclaimed designs in the article – brought to you, as always, by our decorated Independent Creators.

For thousands of years, the art of tapestry-making has transcended cultural boundaries: the technique, it seams, has loomed large throughout the history of Eastern Asia, the ancient Western World, and Pre-Columbian Americas, and it’s all woven together rather nicely on Britannica.com. Then, once you’ve read a few yarns about this product and technique, visit our customizable tapestries page. Don’t leave us hanging!

Putting Pen to Paper

Wednesday, April 24th, 2024

Though electronic means of communication – such as email, apps, or social media accounts – might be fast, convenient, and cost-effective, they still can’t compare with the joy of opening a crisp new notebook, uncapping a felt-tip pen, or unpeeling the back of a sticker. If this is a pleasure that you haven’t experienced in a long time, however, then perhaps the advent of World Stationery Day will change your mind.

World Stationery Day was founded in 2012 with the aim of preserving and celebrating the waning art of analog communication. The concern was that, with the significant technological advancements that were being made at the time – and indeed, that have been made since 2012 – paper and pens, along with highlighters, staplers, erasers, and rulers, were going to be obsolete. However, given that the history of writing supplies can be traced back thousands of years (to Cai Lun, the court official who discovered paper in second-century China, and to the Roman Empire, where metal styluses were used to make imprints on wax), we think stationery, if you’ll pardon the pun, isn’t going anywhere.

The idea of a stationers or stationery supplies shop then emerged in the Middle Ages, when university campuses were the only places you could find booksellers, book-binders, scriveners, and illustrators (and because they were permanently situated there, they were said to be stationary). Nowadays, and at Zazzle, we’ve really pushed the envelope: head to our office supplies department and you can customize all sorts of notepads, desk accessories, journals, and binders. And remember: the pen is mightier than the Word document!

Pull Out the Blanket and Basket!

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2024

It’s that time of year when the days get longer, brighter, and warmer, so why not enjoy the outdoors for a meal? Picnics are a perfect way to benefit from nature. You can have them with a large group of friends or appreciate them just by yourself in a green space near your home.

Some people in the Gen-Z demographic might think that picnics are a new phenomenon that came from trying to have lunch with friends during COVID. But it started as far back as 1649 in a satirical French poem, which featured the Frères Pique-niques, known for visiting friends “armed with bottles and dishes.” The modern picnic, where we sit on the ground with a blanket and a cooler of food and drinks, started in the 1950s and 1960s in the U.S., as more people started taking road trips and stopping to eat in parks.

We know you don't need an excuse to go for a fun picnic with your family, but why not make an exciting day out of it with custom coolers, water bottles, and paper plates for everyone? Go to your local park, unfold your blanket, delight in your favorite food or drink, and soak up the sun.

Make the World A Better Place!

Monday, April 22nd, 2024

Every year, we devote one day to celebrating this wonderful planet we call home—Earth Day! This special day is also about preserving the world for future generations to enjoy and cherish. So, if you’ve been waiting to get involved with your local environmentalist group, then today’s the perfect day to start!

This international day marks the anniversary of the start of the modern environmental movement, which started in 1970 and led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency. This year’s theme is Planet vs. Plastic, with organizations around the world calling for a 60% reduction in plastics by 2040. A reduced amount of plastic in the world, achieved by replacing disposable bags, water bottles, and straws with reusable products, will make the world a better place.

If you’re wondering how to get involved in making the Earth healthier, you can start by joining a local environmental nonprofit, helping plant a garden at your kid's school, or participating in an awareness march through your town. If you plan on organizing something for the day, we have everything you need on our Earth Day page, from shirts and tote bags to stickers and buttons!

Up High, Down Low, Too Slow!

Sunday, April 21st, 2024

Are you not a hugger or not big on handshakes? Then, the high five is a fun way to greet friends. High fives aren't just for kids; they're for everyone! Today is for celebrating this unique form of hello, as it's National High Five Day!

You may wonder how the high five has gotten its own holiday; like many things, it started on a college campus. According to the National High Five Day website, a group of friends at the University of Virginia in 2002 – Conor Lastowka, Sam Miotke, and Wynn Walent – were on the main quad of the campus, where they gave out high fives all day to anyone who wanted one. This became an annual tradition and has now become a national holiday.

A little-known fact about high-fiving is the record for the most high-fives in 24 hours goes Jim Foliano (USA), in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. He achieved 15,338 high-fives in 2023. We can imagine his hand hurts from all of those! Though you may not beat the record for high fives, why not spend the day seeing how many you can get?

A Sticker is Worth a Thousand Words

Tuesday, April 16th, 2024

Stickers are a humble invention that allows us to decorate our personal items, create unique craft projects, and even advertise our businesses! But do you know exactly how this marvelous item came about? In Today’s Moment, we’ll delve into the history surrounding these useful adhesives so you can broaden your knowledge of this awesome form of stationery and then really stick it to ‘em.

According to historians, the very first people to use stickers were the ancient Egyptians. Remnants of paper plastered to walls of ancient markets have indicated that they used this method to showcase the price of different items for sale. However, in 1839, Sir Rowland Hill of Kidderminster, U.K., invented the first adhesive paper. His handy invention went on to become the first type of postage stamp! Nowadays, stickers can be found just about anywhere, often sharing motivational words, showcasing vibrant artwork, or successfully marketing for brands.

Here at Zazzle, we love stickers! So much so that we’ve got over 2 million sticker designs for you to choose from, lovingly made by our Independent Creators. We also offer you the chance to make your very own custom stickers entirely from scratch. William Shakespeare is considered to be one of the greatest dramatists of all time! His wealth of material across both poetry and playwriting has had a profound impact on the world of literature. With his works being read and performed consistently in over one hundred countries, it's safe to say that his legacy will always be celebrated.

While it has been confirmed that this legendary poet and playwright was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, in April 1564, the exact date of his birth is unknown. Still, his birthday is widely celebrated worldwide every April 23rd. He had seven siblings and went on to have three children of his own. Unfortunately, his only granddaughter died childless in 1670, so he does not have any known descendants. During his lifetime, Shakespeare completed 37 plays for the theater and over 150 poems! Many modern movies have been inspired by the iconic works of Shakespeare, with a slew of film and television writers today still referring to his themes in their work.

While you may already know a handful of famous Shakespearean quotes, it’s likely that you have no idea what they actually mean! However, that’s what the article we’ve written entitled “Our Top 12 Classic Shakespeare Quotes & Their Meanings” will address. If you read through this post, chances are you’ll be able to impress even the most seasoned of literary scholars.

We humans often operate on autopilot: rushing through our daily routines and speeding through our workloads while waiting desperately for the weekend to come, and forgetting to stop and simply be present in the moment. Taking a few minutes to breathe deeply, and to look up at the sky, whether it’s a cloudy evening, a sunny morning, or a starry night, can do wonders for our mental state. When you look up at the sky, you’ll likely see interesting cloud formations, airplanes and contrails, different animals flying above you during the day, or awe-inspiring stars and constellations, if it's night time. Creating a sense of wonder in our lives is important, and, luckily, gazing up at the sky can do just that!

To partake in this national day, all you need to do is simply look up at the sky! Plant-tastic Pals

Saturday, April 13th, 2024

Plant lovers, assemble! Today is International Plant Appreciation Day, a special celebration dedicated to the unbe-leaf-able benefits of these awesome flora.

Recent research has suggested that land plants evolved on earth 700 million years ago! As for houseplants, humans have been tending to these for around 5,000 years. It’s believed that the ancient Egyptians grew ferns and palm trees indoors for decorative purposes. Did you know that keeping some plants in or outside of your home may reduce stress levels, improve your mood, boost productivity, and create better air quality? Plants are also key components of our diets, our ability to create medicine, and sources of oxygen. With 391,000 species of vascular plants currently known to science, and around two thousand more being discovered every year, it’s safe to say that the plant kingdom is colossal!

So, whether you prefer to decorate your space with cacti, spider plants, philodendron, or aloe vera, today is the perfect opportunity to learn a little more about plants themselves, and what they do for humankind. Take out a plant encyclopedia from your local library, or read up on some interesting plant facts online. Or, why not head to a garden center to pick up a brand new plant to nurture? You could even take on a fun DIY project, such as decorating your current plant’s pots with colorful paint or cool stickers. To honor this national day further, treat the dedicated plant parents you know to a wonderful plant-themed gift? Go on, let them know that you’re always rooting for them!

Fore the Love of the Game

Wednesday, April 10th, 2024

Ahoy, golf enthusiasts! April 10th marks a day when we swap our business attire for polo shirts, grab our clubs, and hit the green slopes because it's Golfers Day! This day celebrates the sport that brings both joy and playful frustration to millions around the world.

Golfers Day traces its roots back to the early 20th century, when golf started gaining popularity across the United States and Europe. The exact origins of the holiday are a bit murky, but it's believed that it was established to honor the contributions of golfers to the sport, and to encourage more people to take up the game.

Golf as a sport originated in Scotland during the 15th century, when it began as a simple pastime played on rugged coastal terrain. The first documented mention of the term in relation to the game occurred when King James II issued a ban in 1457, concerned that young men were devoting too much time to golfing rather than honing their archery skills! Over the centuries, it evolved into the sophisticated and widely beloved sport we know today, with its iconic courses, elaborate rules, and passionate fanbase.

Whether you're a seasoned pro or a novice, Golfers Day is the perfect excuse to dust off your clubs and enjoy a day on the course. So, grab your lucky glove and golf ball, practice your best 'fore!' shout, and join in the celebration of Golfers Day.

Happy Eid!

Tuesday, April 9th, 2024

Eid al-Fitr, also known as the Festival of Breaking the Fast, is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, prayer, and reflection. The exact date of Eid al-Fitr is determined by the sighting of the new moon, signaling the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

The day begins with a special prayer known as Salat al-Eid, performed at mosques or in large open spaces, where Muslims gather to offer thanks to Allah for the strength and guidance to complete the fast during Ramadan. Following the prayer, families and friends come together to enjoy festive meals, exchange gifts, and extend greetings of "Eid Mubarak" meaning "Blessed Eid."

Throughout the day, people decorate their homes, and traditional sweets and dishes, such as saviya and sheer khurma, are prepared to share with loved ones and guests. Eid al-Fitr isn't just about spiritual renewal – it's a time to strengthen family ties, spread joy, and embrace unity and compassion. It's like a giant hug from the whole Muslim community, reminding us of the importance of kindness, forgiveness, and gratitude. If you celebrate this holiday or know someone who does, spread the joy by sending a card and wrapping up your gifts in Zazzle’s Eid al-Fitr-themed wrapping paper!

Fly High with Creativity

Monday, April 8th, 2024

Before diving into this story, we hope you have a pack of tissues nearby… Let’s get into it! In 1943, during World War II, a touching event took place in England. A seven-year-old girl named Dorie Cooper visited her wounded uncle in the hospital, who was in poor shape after losing his leg. Wanting to lift his mood, Dorie innocently requested a bird drawing. Despite his condition, her uncle started sketching a simple robin he saw from his window.

Dorie's blunt critique of his artistic skills made him laugh, and her sincere gesture of hanging the drawing in her room made him smile. The news of this broke out to his fellow injured comrades and, in turn, inspired them to join in on the fun of drawing birds. Not long after, a contest began on who could do the best bird drawing. It didn't take long for the hospital’s walls to be decorated with all their artwork! Tragically, three years later, Dorie's life was taken in a car accident. At her funeral, her coffin was filled with bird drawings from soldiers, nurses, and doctors, embodying the lasting impact of her tradition.

Though Draw a Picture of a Bird Day was never officially declared a holiday, it blossomed globally through the soldiers, medical staff, and their families. Today, it's celebrated worldwide on April 8th, inviting people to embrace life as is and instantly transform their difficulties into simple pleasures – by drawing! So, pick up a pencil and a notebook, draw a bird, and share the joy with others! Don’t forget to use the hashtag #DABDAY when sharing your art on social media.

Cheers to Beers!

Sunday, April 7th, 2024

Beloved beverages often serve as more than just drinks; they're precious reminders of sweet and fun memories shared with loved ones, sometimes even wrapped in tradition and nostalgia. Beer is one of those beverages that can easily transport us back to that wonderful camping trip where beer was shared around the campfire, or connect us to new communities by tasting local craft creations from various places around the world.

From hoppy IPAs to smooth stouts and refreshing lagers, beer has it all! So, it’s really not a surprise that it’s the third most popular drink in the world, after water and tea! That’s why there's a day dedicated to its celebration. National Beer Day, marked annually on April 7th, is an occasion that brings together beer enthusiasts from around the globe. Today is the perfect reason and excuse to explore new brews, sample local craft beers, or indulge in classic favorites. National Beer Day traces its roots back to April 7, 1933, a day that marked the end of Prohibition in the United States. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Cullen-Harrison Act into law, legalizing beer with limited alcohol content, and people across the nation marked it with a big celebration.

Since then, April 7th has become a lighthearted holiday, marked with cheers, clinks, and, of course, laughter. So, whether you prefer sipping a cold beer wrapped in Zazzle’s can coolers, hosting a beer-tasting party at home, or simply cracking open a bottle on the porch, National Beer Day is all about embracing the companionship and joy that beer brings to our lives.

Getting those 10,000 steps a day can be a struggle sometimes. Whether you get outside for some fresh air first thing in the morning, or after you get home from work, it’s important to keep the momentum up. That’s why we’re here to encourage you to keep on going!

What’s your motivation to keep going? Is it to increase your fitness, or to have peace of mind? Or, do you have a competitive side and want to have the best step count among your friend groups? Either way, you should stick to it. The main thing is, never compare yourself to anyone, and that includes your fitness levels – because we all start somewhere! Just by walking for 30 minutes a day, you can make a whole lot of difference to your health. According to Betterhelp.org, walking offers a multitude of health benefits, including improved cardiovascular and pulmonary fitness, reduced risk of heart disease and stroke, better management of conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, stronger bones, improved balance, increased muscle strength and endurance, and less body fat. So, while you may feel you could be doing better, there are obvious signs you’re doing a lot already by just walking once a day.

Happy National Rainbow Day! Today, let's embrace the cool spectrum of colors that form a vital part of our world. As Maya Angelou once beautifully said: “Try to be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.” We can take this wisdom to heart and strive to be sources of joy and hope in each other's lives. Whether it's through acts of kindness, spreading positivity, or simply sharing a smile, let's be the colorful rays that brighten someone's day. After all, every storm deserves a rainbow, and every heart could use a little extra color on National Rainbow Day!

Speaking of rainbows, we feel we should share with you that we’ve communicated with our colleagues across the water in good ol’ Ireland: they’ve actually informed us that there are no leprechauns with pots of gold at the end of rainbows. We’re sorry to break this news to you, but as it’s National Rainbow Day we wanted to let you know before you went on the hunt for some gold coins. However, we do have some fun facts that might cheer you up. Did you know that the number of colors in a rainbow isn't fixed? When different hues blend together seamlessly, perceptions can vary, with some seeing up to 28 colors. Also, rainbows aren't tangible objects; they're optical phenomena resulting from sunlight refracting in water droplets. Because of this, no two people see the same rainbow, and each observer's perspective creates a unique viewing experience. We find these pieces of trivia absolutely fascinating!

If you like unique experiences, you’re in for a treat when it comes to our personalized products. You can create your own rainbow-colored clothing or home décor pieces to brighten up your day. We all have a favorite color, so why not use that and blend it with another color from the rainbow, making a cool pattern design or even building your own arch on a poster print?

Let’s Keep Fitness Fun!

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2024

Do you like to “move it, move it?” Let's all join together in celebration of National Move More Month! The American Heart Association (AHA) has designated April as a time to raise awareness and improve the lives and well-being of everyone in our nation. By encouraging increased physical activity, their aim is for everyone to have a happier and healthier heart. So, it’s time to make some moves together and prioritize our health this April!

During National Move More Month, you can raise awareness or funds for the AHA through a variety of activities. For instance, group walks or runs can provide socializing opportunities while you keep active! You could initiate fitness challenges, like a step or daily exercise goal. Remember to track your progress and celebrate your achievements! The AHA also recommends outdoor activities, such as hiking or biking, which offer you fresh air and a connection with nature. If you’d prefer to remain indoors, you can also access virtual workouts that provide convenient options for exercising at home. Lastly, you could plan community events, like health fairs or sports tournaments, and engage individuals in collective fitness efforts. Be sure to share your experiences across social media to create even more awareness!

If you need some encouragement to get outside, why not invest in some new workout gear? You can make some custom t-shirts for you and your friends with motivational quotes, and create your own unique style with custom leggings. If you’re going to give it your all this month, you may as well look your best. So, let's get moving, grooving, and enjoying the journey to a more active lifestyle!
