James Montgomery Flagg sketched this image of Uncle Sam in 1917 for a cover of Leslie's Weekly magazine. Flagg studied at the Art Students League of New York and overseas in London and Paris. He illustrated many books, and his work is found on numerous magazine covers. But he is best known for this image of Uncle Sam. Lacking a model, he drew Sam based upon the contours of his own face.
