It is native to coastal North Carolina and northern South Carolina, growing in open bogs, and is also a popular cultivated plant. The floral artwork is our unique color version, based on a drawing by naturalist and artist Isaac Sprague, in The Genera of the Plants of the United States, author Asa Gray, published 1849.
