Vincent van Gogh - Two Lovers Notebook

A Pair of Lovers / Two Lovers (Eglogue en Provence - un couple d'amoureux), painted in 1888 in oil on canvas by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh in Arles. A man and woman walk closely together beneath the trees, a compact image of courtship in the Provençal countryside. The painting was executed early in Van Gogh's stay in Arles, when the brighter southern palette was rapidly transforming his work. Its small scale and simplified silhouettes give the scene the directness of an intimate study rather than a formal portrait.
