This oil pastel is part of a Lenten series called “The Seven Last Words”. On Calvary’s hill three crosses stood. The sinless One hung between two criminals who while paying the death penalty had two very ways of interacting with the Man in the middle. The thief on His right asked Christ if he would remember him when He came into his Kingdom and so he heard these words, “Today you will be with be in paradise”, (Luke 23:43). Joining the mocking crowd below the one on His left said, "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!" (Luke 23:39). To show the contrast the cross on Christ’s right is swallowed up in the glory of His marvelous light and life. To His left the cross is excluded into a cold, dark place -- where souls who do not embrace Him remain separated from Him.
