All Proceeds Go To The Preservation of The Textile History of Greenville County South Carolina. ___________________________________ The first mill whistle sounded in 1874 on the banks of Reedy River Falls bringing the modern textile era to Greenville. By 1917 Textile Hall was completed in time for the second Southern Textile Exposition. At the opening of the exposition Greenville was proclaimed "The Textile Center Of The South". Textile manufacturing had become Greenville's principal industry with 35 textile plants including spinning and weaving mills, dye facilities, bleacheries, finishing plants, plush mills and a worsted mill. A number of other companies also had been established in the county for the manufacture of textile equipment and supplies to support the industry. Greenville was said to be the only place in the world where cotton could be seen in every process of the manufacture from the growing of the cotton to the completion of a finished garment ready for wear - all without the necessity of the cotton going outside the confines of the county. By 1937 over 467 cotton mills were in operation within a 100 mile radius of the city and Greenville became recognized as "The Textile Center Of The World", a title it would retain until the late 1960's.
