About Michael Arthur jones
Born Feb 2 1973 at the Indian Hospital in Lawton Oklahoma. I was raised on the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation (Seneca) in Southwestern New York State to an Irish mother and an Onondaga-Seneca father. We lived day to day due to alcoholism, we lived without running water and used woodstoves to keep warm. My life was more akin to something out of the 1920's then the 1980's. I was born an only child and grew up fast in this chaotic environment. I learned how to run a chainsaw at age 8 and learned how to make and sell my Iroquois pottery alongside my father at the age of 10 to help make ends meet as well as make up for all the money spent on alcohol. We lived on welfare for 8 years from 1977 to 1985 when my mother tragically but not surprisingly passed away at the age of 49 years old due to an alcohol related circumstance. Throughout my childhood I drew. I drew to escape the chaotic alcohol induced violence and apathy surrounding me. I raised myself to a great degree. My drawings are dark and light , just like me. I consider myself Native American as that is the culture I was immersed in. I am lucky to be alive and do not drink for obvious reasons. I am also a computer programmer and web designer and married with 2 young children near Austin Texas. I also am a singer-songwriter, here is a link to that other creative outlet of mine : http://www.myspace.com/jipjonesproductions My drawings are cathartic and healing for me and I spend 4 hours at a time on one for about 6 to 8 sessions which totals about 24 to 48 work hours dependent on the size of the piece. I use straight forward pen and ink and water color paper or something close to 100lb paper. I dive in and see where it goes. I give my pieces titles after I have studied what came out on paper for awhile. I hope you enjoy my pieces as much as I do creating them!
