About

Well, I’m just about as average as a person can be: I'm middle-age, live in a mid-sized town in the Midwest, I have brown hair, I am the national average height and weight, etc. It is difficult to feel special when a person is “just” average. I use printmaking to show my unique perspective. Beauty is everywhere: it is in the natural, organic forms around us. Earthly shapes, colors and textures are harnessed using design elements and guide the viewer to see the beauty within. In this way the everyday becomes sacred. I use personal life experiences, memories, stories as my inspiration. Each piece is representative of thoughtful reflection. The intricate style of the work leads to meditation which aids in my remembering a time and place. The Arts and Crafts Movement of the early 20th century was a reaction against the Industrial Revolution. In this same line of thinking, I respect the union between the artist and the art. Although I use a computer as a graphic designer during the day, I choose use my hands when creating artwork at home. I purposefully do not use straight lines or perfect geometric shapes. In this way I wish to show my humanity, creativity and individuality. Wabi-Sabi describes an aesthetic wherein authentic beauty is found through imperfection, impermanence, and incompleteness . It also suggests a natural process. I call myself an imperfect perfectionist: my flaws are what make me human and, in these flaws, I accept my humanity. This in turn humbles me. Currently, I have the best job in the world as a Graphic Designer/Illustrator/Creative Consultant at a large format printer by day - and a fine art relief print maker by night.
