In 1993, shortly after Steve Branch, Christopher Byers, and Michael Moore (all 8 years old) were found murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas, police arrested Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley and charged the three teenagers with murder based solely upon an error-filled and police-coerced false confession, extracted from 16-year-old Jessie Misskelley Jr. Jessie Misskelley recanted his statement immediately upon being released to his family, stating that the police forced, via threat and the lure of money, the story he told, but it was too late. Misskelley, Jason Baldwin and Damien Echols, known as The West Memphis Three, were arrested—then convicted of murder. Stunningly, Jason Baldwin, 16 at the time and a model student, was sentenced to life without parole; Jessie Misskelley got life plus 40 years, while Damien Echols was sentenced to death.

Damien spent 18 years in solitary confinement on death-row awaiting death by lethal injection for a crime neither he nor Jessie nor Jason had anything to do with.
The West Memphis Three had been wrongfully convicted for crimes they did not commit. But, crucial new evidence of their innocence has been uncovered including crime scene DNA that absolves the three men and points to others. Some of the country's leading pathologists found that much of the forensic evidence presented to the jury, which helped convict the young men, was false and not consistent with the cause of death nor wounds found on the bodies. All this new evidence was scheduled to be presented at the evidentiary hearing this December. Jason, Jessie and Damien are now free men....but we will continue to fight to clear their name.

I have to confess, that when I first saw the documentary of the whole story and trial, I did think they were guilty. I did judge on looks and that was so wrong of me. I truely believe now, with the new DNA evidence, that all three men are indeed NOT GUILTY and should be freed as soon a spossible. Thank God that Damien was not executed and all three should be exonerated and compensated. I hope it all works out for them and they can live a long and wonderful life. I know that Damien had a new baby at the time of the trial, and he has missed out on raising his son, and no amount of money could ever replace that. Sorry Damien, that has to be the hardest thing ever. Good luck to you all.

Unbelievable...
I have watched many trials on Court T.V. (Tru T.V) and follow Nancy Grace, and watch "Investigative Discovery", and many crime programs. I am a bit of an armchair detective, and this story caught my eye; as I had graduated back in 1990, and was not aware of the case at that time. I have read the story and at first thought it was possible that the boys were likely guilty; however, in the back of my mind, I kept thinking about Christopher Buyers step dad. These men, should no way in hell be in that prison; let alone, Damien... who is in solitary confinement and awaiting a "LETHAL INJECTION"...not to mention the coerced confession of Jessie, who is mentally handicapped, unlawfully.... I'm just sick to my stomach how botched up this case was and that these men have to sit in prison for a crime they did not commit.

I can't believe this. It was my first time hearing of this last night. My heart hurts and is pissed off. The judge OMG. come on is he getting paid for lying.. Can't get an understanding of how the legal system can allow this. When they are released and I believe they will be. That judge should pay for his mistakes if you want to call it that and the police. They made an oath and they broke it.

Get these men out!!
I have been following this case for years. I am outraged that someone is on death row for having black hair and dressing differently, That would have been me and most of my friends in the early 80's. The system works, but when it fails, it is almost impossible to get anything overturned. Shame on Politicians and the D.A. for allowing it to go on this long. They shouldn't have been convicted in the first place. But for anyone in Government to admit they made a mistake? Well. That just might make them look human. God forbid! If you can donate, buy merchandise, or even a song (Eddie Vedder with The Supersuckers called "Free the West Memphis 3". It rocks!!) you would help in the Defense of these three men. I have read very much info on this case and I can not believe thast these men(boys), were not granted a new trial . In Jan 2011 a judge ruled that evidence may be presented to see if they are granted a new trial. I certainly hope the WM3 are released from prison, after the injustice in their first trial.

WOW
I saw this story on 48 hours just the other day, I then rented Paradise Lost. I am sad for the families of the 3 young boys who where murdered, but I am also sad for the 3 young men that have been imprisoned for this crime that they so obviously did not commit. I have read every website I could find regardging this and watch many clips and am in absolute shock that these men have spent half their lives in prison. In my heart after reading and watching what I have so far I am 100% certain these men are NOT GUILTY of these crimes. GET THEM OUT OF JAIL!!! Then put the real killer(s) in prison and serve those three young boys the justice they have been denied!!

stay strong
i saw the story on 48 hours. This is the first I had ever heard of the story. I am in shock that the government judge these boys with no evidence. In this day so many people have been freed by less DNA then what they have in this case. DNA tests prove that the boys werent even near these boys. So, now their are 6 victims. The state should be ashamed. With love from Maryland Tammy Sheppard

hi
I think it's great people are supporting them. They were judged on what they looked like, and they deserve to be free.
