Typically you want to hang big ornaments first closer to the center of the tree. This way, they will impact the tree less with their weight than if they were on the edge and it also makes them less likely to fall off.
After your bigger ornaments are on the tree it is easier to fill in the gaps with smaller ornaments. Smaller ornaments can also go on the edge of trees more safely as they weigh less and are less likely to tip the tree and fall off.
Here is the best way to arrange your Christmas ornaments:
- Start with your Christmas lights by starting from the top and wrap them around the tree, working your way down
- Add ribbon by starting from the top starting different from the opposite side of the tree Christmas lights begin and wrap them around the tree going down, similar to your Christmas lights
- Hang large ornaments first - deeper into the tree to help stabilize it
- Place your smaller ornaments by evenly distributing them and filling up gaps
- Hang your tree topper
- Use different shapes (stars, globes, circles, etc.) and textures (smooth, matte, glittery, etc.) to decorate your tree
- Take a step back to look at the tree and make adjustments where necessary
Here are some best practices to follow to make unpacking hassle free while making sure your ornaments remain in good condition:
- Sort and categorize - group ornaments by type, size, and material. If you decorate by theme and/or color you can also store them that way as well to make unpacking and decorating your tree easier for the following year.
- Use ornament storage containers - invest in special ornament storage containers with individual compartments to prevent them from bumping into each other and breaking
- You can even make your own by using egg cartons or boxes with tissue paper dividers. However, airtight containers are even better to protect your ornaments from dust, pests, and moisture
- Wrap Fragile Ornaments - wrap delicate ornaments in tissue paper or bubble wrap to help prevent breakage
- Label - add clear labeling to boxes such as “Glass Ornaments” or “Red & Gold Decorations”. To be extra organized, keep a detailed list or inventory of what’s in each box
- Store in a cool, dry place - Avoid heat, humidity, and extreme cold as these conditions will damage your ornaments. Also, avoid the sun.
- Store heavier items on the bottom - place heaviest items on the bottom to avoid crushing lighter, more delicate ornaments
You can see if your ornament will arrive in time by checking the product page. Near the top, right below the product’s star rating you’ll see “Order today and get it by” and you’ll see a range of when the ornament should arrive. Most ornaments arrive within a week and a half after ordering.
