  • Content Guidelines

The Content You See on Zazzle Is an Expression of Creativity Zazzle exists so people can channel their creativity into designs and products. Whether it’s, love, self-reflection, joy--or something more fiery than that-- it’s all valuable energy to channel into your creative expression.

It might not all be for you or your taste, personal beliefs. And that’s okay. Your right to protest and to express another viewpoint is welcome. When we believe that content may cause physical and/or mental harm, that’s where we draw the line.

We Honor and Believe in Moments in Time Where Change Must Happen That change is not linear, and it is not always universally accepted and acknowledged. We also honor those moments when context means that content must change. And therefore, we understand when people rail against those decisions. We want to hear all voices. We’re not here for bullying or intimidation. If you’re fueled by hate, and that’s what you want to share with the world well, feel free to go elsewhere. You won’t be able to showcase that here. We do not tolerate hate, and we won’t be used to harm.

We Have a Process to Evaluate When a design is ordered on Zazzle, there is a review process of the design before the product is made. We make this effort to try to ensure that the designer has complied with the Zazzle user agreement.

Content, when uploaded, has rating designations. If Creators have not rated the content appropriately, there is a mechanism to let us know here. And if you’re a creator using our tools, be sure to use appropriate ratings designations.

When items are brought to our attention that merit further review, we have a process to do so.

When content is flagged we review that complaint using legal guidelines and our content policies. These decisions are not political- the team that evaluates these complaints is a diverse group. They’re not personally motivated, but they are guided by the values we represent and the core tenet that content should not be an expression of immediate harm. In an attempt to provide as much transparency as possible, here’s an overview of the factors we use to evaluate and make a decision.

Evaluation and Review Criteria

In an attempt to provide as much transparency as possible, here’s an overview of the factors we use to evaluate and make a decision.

  • Negative Opinion and Point of View Crosses the Line Into Hate and Misinformation We believe there is a spectrum in which opinion crosses the line into hate. We also believe that there can be a moment in which point of view crosses the line into misinformation. When these lines are crossed, we will take action.

Established by a Reputable Source As an Extremist Movement, Terrorist Organization Including Related Symbols and Iconography Our goal is to provide tools and content for fun, safe, productive self-expression, not to promote extremism or cause harm.

  • Signals and Sentiment for the Current Moment in Time History marches on, and society matures past content that may have been considered by some to be acceptable decades ago.

Content Guardrails

We believe that guardrails help keep thinking out of the box but within the lines of what it means to have a marketplace with integrity as one of the core values.

Here Are Guardrails We Are Currently Operating By:

  • Historical Content There is a place for acknowledging historical events and moments. There are also moments in time when we must recognize that historical items can cause harm and pain to people in the present moment. The confederate flag and related imagery and nazi imagery are examples of historical content that we will not allow on our site. This is a nuanced topic because some of this content could be considered historical or artistic yet it contains depictions that we’re not comfortable with today. We do consider the nuances; while we’re not in the business of erasing history, we are comfortable making decisions based on our spectrum of causing pain to many.

Political Viewpoints Multiple opinions on politics are welcome. When opinions are deemed to have crossed over into violence or misinformation, that’s when we are prompted to act.

Race, Religion, Identity, Disability, Illness Race, religion, physical and mental illness, disability are not up for satire or humor that falls into that painful spectrum. We understand today that mental health such as OCD, Bipolar are just as painful to many as is content depicting physical differences.

  • Victims and Perpetrators Our heart goes out to victims of crimes, violence, natural disasters, and other tragedies. In the past, we have been contacted by victims’ families; we understand how that feels for them when others appear to be profiting from their tragedies. So even when creators have the best of intentions, we may respond by removing designs as they come to our attention.

Language Language is ever-evolving, so we have words and phrases that we’re not okay with publishing because they are problematic, harmful or have evolved to be a destructive part of the lexicon.

Current events, sentiments, and sensitivities We love when people express themselves in reaction to what’s going on in the world around us. We also recognize that sometimes this can become hurtful or harmful to a person or group of people.

Our AI Principles

At Zazzle, we believe in using artificial intelligence (“AI”) technologies to foster creativity, increase efficiency, and enhance skill sets. We are committed to developing an innovative approach that leverages the latest advancements while still allowing for a people-centric focus.

We Believe in the Inherent Power of Human Creativity and Capability. To That End, Here Are the Key Principles Guiding the Use of Ai in Our Marketplace:

  • Respect Human Agency AI should not replace humans but rather enhance their capabilities. We strive to empower people and put them in control of how they interact with new technology and their preferred creative tools.

Promote Creativity AI should be used to facilitate creativity and encourage collaboration between people and technology alike. Our goal is to support innovation by creating environments where new ideas and solutions can thrive.

Maximize Efficiency AI should raise the floor for creative work, enabling many to reach heights greater than they would without assistance, if they so choose. We aim to allow for systems that automate repetitive or routine processes so people can focus on the bigger picture.

  • Enhance Skill Sets AI should be used to foster creativity, spark inspiration, and help develop people's skills, not replace them. We strive to provide innovative tools and experiences that enable users to create, grow, and become more proficient in their craft.

Accept Ownership AI does not change the notion of ownership for brands and copyright protection. We remain committed to ensuring that our marketplace, including products and designs, respects brands’ ownership.

At Zazzle, we are committed to creating products and experiences that foster creativity and collaboration between people, with the tools and technology they choose to use. We recognize that as we continue to explore new possibilities with AI, these principles may need to evolve and change over time. We remain committed to ensuring use of AI on our marketplace is ethical and responsible, and we will continue to monitor our approach to ensure that these principles are upheld.

We believe these principles will help us continue to grow a community focused on creating value, driven by the spirit of our Zazzle values. We look forward to growing with you as we continue to explore the potential of this technology.

Together, we can use AI to do amaZing things!

AI In Action

The use of AI in Images for sale on Zazzle

As articulated in our AI Principles above, our goal is to support innovation by creating environments where new ideas and solutions can thrive. This can take the form of visual expression on the Zazzle marketplace through content that is AI-supported or AI-generated.

Specifically, the Following Terms and Conditions Apply:

  • • All AI-generated content must be entirely novel works, and not knowingly copied from any existing design.

    • All AI-generated artwork should adhere to the same standards of quality, originality, and accuracy expected of all content sold on the Zazzle marketplace in order to be accepted and listed for sale. Creators must ensure that any AI-generated design is of sufficient quality and accuracy before submitting it for listing on the marketplace.

    • All AI-generated designs should be created within the guidelines set by the license(s) and the user agreement of their toolset(s) or service(s).

    • All designs that contain any AI-generated content as part of the final composition should be appropriately tagged as “generativecontent”. This will help us track trends and usage in our marketplace.

  • • Any artwork that is deemed to have been created with malicious intent or to infringe upon the rights of others will not be allowed on the marketplace, and could lead to account termination under our User Agreement

    • Creators should seek legal counsel prior to listing any AI-generated artworks for sale, especially if there are questions about copyright or other intellectual property issues.

    • Zazzle administrators reserve the right to remove and/or reject any artwork that does not meet these criteria, or adhere to our User Agreement in any other way at their discretion.

We Are All Doing Our Best

We allow for anyone to upload designs. In fact, new designs are uploaded on Zazzle every second of the day, even in the middle of the night. So in the time we estimate it took you to get to read this far, hundreds of designs were just uploaded onto the site. While we have filters and technology to assist in trying to make sure inappropriate content doesn’t get by, technology is not perfect and can’t replace human intent, judgment, and conviction. We know we are all doing the best we can with our information. Issues will happen, it’s how we learn, adjust and move on that really matters.
