Kagu

Kagu is the mascot of Okinawa Yanbaru Kuina. The Okinawa rail, known in Japanese as the "Yanbaru kuina" (ヤンバルクイナ), is a rare bird endemic to the northern part of Okinawa Island, Japan. It was only discovered in 1981 and is unique as it is one of the few species of flightless birds in the world. The Yanbaru Kuina is designated as a National Natural Monument and is classified as an endangered species. Its population was severely threatened by habitat loss and predation from introduced species like the mongoose. However, thanks to a number of conservation efforts, including mongoose eradication programs and raising public awareness about roadkill, the population is now on a slow recovery trend.
