Connecting Through Social Media - Part 1

Now that you’ve created some awesome products, it’s time to promote them! One of the most effective ways to engage your audience in real time is through social media.

In this day and age, it’s nearly impossible to meet somebody that does not engage in social media in one way or another: grandmothers use it to embarrass their grandkids, friends share their latest interests, and artists post their latest masterpieces. Whatever the use case may be, the bottom line is simple: social media connects us all, making the world a much smaller place.

Why Do I Need to Be on Social Media?

Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and YouTube not only allow you to engage with your fans, but it also helps your fans feel included in your creative process.

Remember, the secret to a great social media strategy is to foster and grow a relationship with your fans; allowing your fans to invest themselves into your work. By growing your fan base, you are essentially building a network of enthusiastic customers who will share their love of your products with their friends!

Where to Start?

Now that you’re well on your way to creating your brand, you may want to consider opening social media accounts strictly dedicated to your creator persona. By having a dedicated creator page, your fans will be able to engage with your work without having to sift through personal posts, and it will also make it a whole lot easier when it comes time to track your pages’ performance (which we’ll cover in an upcoming article).

If you haven’t yet opened a creator-dedicated account, aim for platforms such as Facebook and Instagram to start. You’ll want to start with platforms that are visually friendly; after all, you’re in the business of visuals. But hey, if Twitter is your game, that’s great too! You’ll want to focus your efforts on where you and your audience are the most socially active, and where you feel the most at home, actively engaging your audience. It’s not necessary to be heavily active on EVERY social media channel.

Building a following may be slow to start, but you’ll notice the momentum build. As you grow your followers, you are also showcasing your page to potential followers. People are more inclined to follow those with an established fan base and will choose to click ‘follow’ without a thorough perusing of your posts.

Tips and Tricks

Choose a Handle and Stick With It

You’ll want to use the same handle for all your social media accounts, preferably the same as your Zazzle store. You’ll want your customers to start recognizing your brand, and the best way to do that is through handle repetition.

Treat Your Social Media Channels as an Extension of Your Identity

Link back to your channels on your business cards, in your emails, and any other opportunity where you can win a fan. Remember, there are more people that don’t know about your work than those that do, so take every opportunity you can to start shifting that tide.

Follow and Engage with Other Creators and Trendsetters

What better way to gain more followers than by getting featured by other creators? Getting featured in a post from a well-established creator, or even a celebrity, will get you seen by a much wider audience. But it’s not a one-way street; post the work of creators that inspire you as well. Don’t be shy and socialize!

Share, Share, Share!

You should engage with your fans as regularly as you can. Remember, you’re building a following, so give them a reason to follow.

Always Direct Traffic to Your Zazzle Store

Remember to link out your store URL in your about/bio portions of your profile in order to make it easy for your audience to always circle back to your Zazzle store. Also, for Facebook users, be sure to utilize the SHOP button for your page.

#Custom Hashtags

Create custom, easy to remember hashtags for all of your posts related to your creator store. By including a branded hashtag, you make it way easier for your audience to keep up with all your content. In the case of word-of-mouth marketing, sharing hashtags is a great way for your fans to spread the word about your store, even if they don’t remember the exact URLs. Just do your research to be sure that the hashtags you’re considering are not already in use.
