Halloween: An Origin Story

Sunday, Oct 31th, 2021

Wait! Before you devour armfuls of candy, douse yourself in soft drinks, and invite the whole neighborhood around for a horror movie marathon – spare a moment, today, to learn about the origins of Halloween!

Though Halloween has reached its peak popularity in the last two decades, its history stretches back at least two millennia, with the Celtic festival of Samhain. Samhain was held on October 31st, and marked both the end of the harvest and the beginning of the winter; it was also a time when the boundary between our world and the next was believed to weaken. And did you know that, while Halloween is technically ‘All Hallows’ Eve,’ as it falls on the day before All Saints’ Day, it was actually only in the 9th century A.D. that All Saints’ Day was changed to November?

Here at Zazzle, we don’t have any tricks, but we’ve got plenty of treats. For example, why not check out our article on “The Origins of Halloween” for a more thorough look at the holiday’s history? Or, if you’re still wondering what to stream as part of your movie night, then our “Best Halloween Movies of All Time” article should give you all the inspiration you need. Whether you’re a vampire, werewolf, mummy, or daddy, there’s plenty to discover this Halloween weekend!

Fandom

Saturday, Oct 30th, 2021

Here at Zazzle, we’re accustomed to dealing with fans, whether they’re partial to BatmanBeetlejuice, or UC Berkeley. But what exactly IS a fan, and how do you become one?

Bizarrely, although the word ‘fan’ appeared in the late 17th century, it actually disappeared from usage after that for a whopping 200 years! It was only in the late 19th century that the word resurfaced, used in sporting contexts to describe the most ardent of supporters. Being a fan also comes with a multitude of social and emotional benefits, as it brings people together, improves their mood, and provides them with a sense of community spirit. If you’re a Potterhead who has actually set up their own version of Hogwarts in their backyard, then you’ll know what we’re talking about, here.

Learn more about the culture of fandoms – and perhaps pick up some choice merchandise – by reading our "What Does It Mean to Be a Fan?" article on Zazzle Ideas.

You've Got Mail!

Friday, Oct 29th, 2021

Happy International Internet Day! Here’s to, potentially, the most incredible invention in human history: a worldwide network that allows its users to share information, stream content, hold online conversations, and even do their shopping! Why, it’s through the power of the Internet – and the magic of ‘electronic mail’ – that you’re able to receive your daily updates courtesy of Zazzle, which is surely something to celebrate.

The Internet wouldn’t exist at all, however, without two enterprising students at UCLA and Stanford in 1969. On October 29th of that year, Charley Kline succeeded in sending a short message to his friend, Bill Duvall, across terminals installed at their respective universities. The message consisted of only five letters – L O G I N – but in 2021, it’s possible to send an entire manuscript via email or IM.

Whether you’re a HTML hotshot or a binary beginner, why don’t you take Kline and Duvall’s advice, and L O G I N to Zazzle today? There are geeky t-shirts galore, and a whole mainframe’s worth of computer-related accessories, such as laptop skins and mouse pads! Let the Internet do what it does best this October 29th, and open a new window full of fun and possibilities!

Happy International Internet Day!

Putting First Responders First!

Thursday, Oct 28th, 2021

Today at Zazzle, we’re celebrating a very important group of people: our first responders, and those courageous, dedicated individuals who come to our aid in times of crisis. Their specialized training and altruism are qualities for which we’re all thankful – particularly given the events of the last two years.

National First Responders’ Day was only introduced by Congress in 2017, so a day of recognition for police officers, paramedics, firefighters, and EMTs is long overdue. An estimated 4.6 million people either work or volunteer as first responders in the U.S., and as they’re often required to put their lives on the line to fulfill their duty, it’s sobering to think of where we’d be without them.

If you know a first responder and you’d like to support their efforts, USBA.com recommends donating to an appropriate charity or cause. Alternatively, you can thank them personally, perhaps with a thank you card from Zazzle. However you choose to honor these national heroes is up to you, but we know they’ll appreciate the gesture!

We've Got You Covered!

No new phone is complete without an accompanying phone case or skin. And it makes sense, too: not only will a phone case keep your expensive Android or iPhone from meeting a sticky end, but they’re endlessly personalizable, identifying you, your interests, and your style, all in one convenient piece of plastic.

The earliest cell phones on the market – those bulky, pre-Internet types – didn’t need any cases, of course. Motorola invented the first prototype in 1973, and Martin Cooper, a Motorola executive, supposedly used it to call his competitors, boasting about their latest invention! These phones were expensive, lacked screens, and needed 10 hours of charging time to support a 30-minute call. Even throughout the 1990s and 2000s, phone cases were non-existent, due to the materials used in their manufacture and the small, green-tinted screens.

All of this changed in 2007, when Apple released the iPhone, and the latest models, the Apple 13 and 13 Pro, are only a month old! In case you’re lucky enough to have upgraded to these newest editions, we’re already one step ahead of you: browse our selection of expertly crafted iPhone 13 cases, each of them ready to be enhanced with your custom details!

We've got you COVERED with iPhone cases!

Happy National Pumpkin Day!

Tuesday, Oct 26th, 2021

This one’s for the pie-bakers, the latte-lovers, and the committed carvers! That’s right, it’s National Pumpkin Day! If you, like so many of us, look forward to Fall all year long, you probably get super excited at the sight of pumpkins, and you’re not alone! But we bet you don’t know these fun facts about everyone’s favorite member of the gourd family…

Did you know the first Jack-o’-lanterns were actually made from turnips and potatoes, not pumpkins? Or that pumpkins are technically a kind of fruit? We may associate them with the vegetable patch, but the stringy pulp and seeds you find inside a pumpkin are actually characteristics of fruit, not vegetables! And here’s some good news for you: pumpkins are considered highly nutritious since they’re loaded with antioxidants and vitamin A.

If you’re hungry for more fun facts about pumpkins, head to Good Housekeeping to check out these 15 Fun Pumpkin Facts you probably don’t know! And don’t miss your chance to add a little extra pumpkin to your Halloween this year: we’ve got lots of fun pumpkin t-shirts and pumpkin décor, right here on Zazzle!

A Journey Through Time…

Monday, Oct 25th, 2021

How’s your Monday going? We hope your week is off to a great start, but if your Monday is feeling a little too Monday-ish, today’s moment is sure to transport you away from your back-to-work blues. Feel like a journey through time? Allow us to guide you …

Ever wondered why vintage travel posters are so captivating? Lately, it feels like these vibrant, art deco advertisements are everywhere from your local restaurant to your neighbor’s home office, and it’s not without good reason. According to the BBC, the thrall of these posters stems from the persuasive design style travel companies used to sell holidays in the ‘20s and ‘30s. The bright colors and picturesque scenes aren’t just pretty drawings, they’re tactical efforts to evoke daydreams and wanderlust –and it totally works, right?

While most of the travel posters we see now are new drawings, the real buzz surrounds the rare original posters that have survived from the ‘20s and ‘30s, which are now valuable collector’s items. Would you like your own slice of nostalgia? Take a quick trip to Zazzle for a vintage travel poster of your own!

Stick With Us a Moment!

Thursday, Oct 21st, 2021

It’s no secret we love the paper aisle here at Zazzle. There’s always room for more personalized pens, fresh new envelopes, and of course, stickers! Stickers are a stationery game-changer whether you’re a proud small business owner, busy teacher, or even a die-hard movie fan. And no matter what kind of sticker enthusiast you are, you’re in good company!

Although the self-adhesive labels we know today were only invented by R. Stanton Avery in 1935, the practice of fixing paper to walls or merchandise to display information has been traced all the way back to the ancient Egyptians. So while stickers are certainly not a recent innovation, they remain a popular and highly versatile one.

If you’d like to add a little something extra to your next event (or bribe your kids to eat their veggies) check out the wide selection of unique stickers on Zazzle! Our brand partners have some awesome options featuring Winnie The PoohHarry Potter, and other fan-favorites. For baby showers, corporate events, and birthday celebrations, you’ll find stickers to complete your theme, thank your guests, and even get everyone giggling, right here on Zazzle!

Use stickers for EVERY moment in your life!

'Happiness Is a Warm Puppy'

Wednesday, Oct 20th, 2021

Good grief! Is it October 20th already? With all the cozy sweaters, comforting beverages, and creepy Halloween décor to enjoy, the days are simply flying by! And you know what else happens in October? The anniversary of the classic comic strip, and much-loved Zazzle brand partner, Peanuts, which debuted in daily newspapers in October 1950. That’s 71 years of Snoopy, folks! So before October disappears on us like one of Charlie Brown’s footballs, let’s take today’s moment to appreciate this beloved cartoon and the joy it’s brought countless readers over the years.

Did you know that Peanuts is likely the longest story ever told by one person? The more than 18,000 comic strips Charles ‘Sparky’ Schultz spent 50 years drawing represent much of what we champion here at Zazzle: self-expression, creativity, and fun. Oh, and let’s not forget beagles! Lucy van Pelt herself put it best when she said,‘happiness is a warm puppy.’ If you agree, you can find some more wonderful Peanuts quotes and pithy Snoopy humor in our official licensed Peanuts store. And remember:

‘All you need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.’- Charles Schultz

All Aboard the Friend-ship!

Tuesday, Oct 19th, 2021

When we were kids, making new friends was pretty easy. Anyone in the immediate vicinity of roughly the same age was almost automatically a friend. And, boy, if you discovered that you liked the same sports team, cartoon, or brand of soda, you’d quickly become besties. As adults, making friends often requires a little more effort. However, National New Friends Day—which is today—is a reminder to us all that the effort is worthwhile. New friends not only help broaden our horizons, but friendship also provides emotional support, helps to relieve stress, and, as a result, can even benefit your physical health.

In light of the recent COVID-19 pandemic, a time during which many of us experienced feelings of loneliness and isolation, National New Friends Day is particularly poignant. If you would like to start meeting new people as restrictions lift around the world, check out this list of ‘102 Ways to Make Friends as An Adult’ over at Parade.com.

Though today is about new friends, there’s never a bad time to celebrate old ones either. If you’d like to pick up a little something to let your BFF know just how much they mean to you, check out our wonderful selection of ‘Best Friend Gifts’ right here.

Here's To 80 Years of Big Floppy Ears!

Friday, Oct 15th, 2021

It’s a big month in the history of our brand partners Disney. Not only are the company celebrating the 50th anniversary of Disney World, which opened in Orlando in October 1971, but it's also the 80th anniversary of one of the most beloved animated movies of all time: Dumbo.

The fourth Disney animated feature film—following Snow White, Pinocchio, and Fantasia—¬Dumbo was released in October of 1941. The heart-warming tale about an outcast young circus elephant who, with the help of an unlikely friend, discovers he has a special gift, was a critical and commercial success for Disney. The film received the Academy Award for ‘Best Scoring of a Musical Picture’ in 1941, while the song ‘Baby Mine’ also received a nomination in the ‘Best Original Song’ category.

If we’ve got you feeling nostalgic, you can, of course, check out Dumbo on Disney+, or visit our officially licensed Dumbo store to discover an enchanting range of merchandise from both the original animated movie and the 2019 live-action adaptation of the same name.

It's National Stop Bullying Day!

Wednesday, Oct 13th, 2021

Today is National Stop Bullying Day in the United States. Observed on the second Wednesday of October each year, National Stop Bullying Day is one of a number of annual events that aims to promote awareness of bullying and educate people on the measures that can be taken to prevent it.

Though the focus is on schools and children, it nevertheless serves as a reminder to us all to be kind to others wherever we may encounter them—whether it’s in public, in the workplace, or online.

If you’d like to spread the message and the love, you can get involved on social media by using the hashtags #NationalStopBullyingDay and #StopBullyingDay. Remembering the First Holiday Cards...

Tuesday, Oct 12th, 2021

Did you know that the first Christmas cards were sent by Englishman Henry Cole in 1843? According to the Smithsonian, Cole had been inundated with mail and wanted to respond to all the letters he’d received without having to pen lengthy prose. Thus, he asked an artist friend named J.C. Horsley to produce a festive illustration, which he then had printed on 1000 cards along with the greeting ‘A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year To You.’

With the holidays just around the corner, it’s a good time to start thinking about what kind of Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or New Year’s cards you’d like to send out in 2021. As usual, photo cards are trending this year, and we’ve got a wide variety of designs for you to personalize with your favorite family snaps. The design process has never been easier either, thanks to our wonderful new Holiday Card Maker. If, however, you’d like to follow more closely in Henry Cole’s footsteps, you can actually buy a postcard with the very same illustration that he used on the first Christmas cards all those years ago. You’ll find it right here on Zazzle!

Indigenous People's Day

Monday, Oct 11th, 2021

Today, we celebrate Indigenous People's Day. While we recognize it is also Columbus Day for some, today, we chose to honor the indigenous people of America and their rich history. All of us need to understand the past in our country, especially surrounding Native American issues. It's also a chance to reflect on what it means to be American today, whether we're honoring the ones who came before us or reflecting on how far our society has come since then. To understand the significance of today and the change in how we celebrate, this Smithsonian article presents the history of the day and why it matters that we teach a thoughtful and accurate representation of our past. As we continue learning more information, it becomes necessary to reflect on what changes need to be made to properly represent everyone's history, especially for the sake of future generations.

Today, we celebrate Indigenous People's Day.

Mental Health Matters

Sunday, Oct 10th, 2021

Today we commemorate World Mental Health Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness of mental health issues. Perhaps more so than ever before, this day merits attention as we collectively wrestle with the impact of a global pandemic on our mental wellbeing. During the World Health Organization's 2021 Summit, governments worldwide stepped up to propose scaling mental health support services. The organization Checkpoint.org provides a central database of resources by country for mental health issues. This year, we have seen examples of individuals brave enough to prioritize their mental health over other external expectations including athletes such as Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles. As our understanding of mental health grows, we must evolve along with it.

Comfy Cozy

Friday, Oct 8th, 2021

What does cozy mean? Some may think of it as a specific place where they can escape from their worries and relax, while others might associate it with warmth or happiness. The word cozy originates from old Scottish cosie, which itself might stem from the Norwegian, kose. (We sense a Norweigian trend here since 'hygge' brings up cozy and hug vibes.)

For most people, home decor is the best way to achieve the feeling of coziness in their lives. From comfortable seating arrangements to cozy lighting and warm colors that make you feel at ease, cozy home decor is all about the little details that complete the space for you. You can transform your living room into a retreat with comfortable sofa pillows and comfortable throw blankets, or you could fill up an empty corner. Cozy corners are the thing, and custom Zazzle products are just the thing- Pillows, blankets, poufs, art, coasters can all set the scene- just add comfort foods and your favorite people for the hugs. Whatever your definition of personalized home decor might be, there are plenty of ideas out there to create a comfortable, cozy environment.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Friday, Oct 1st, 2021

October is breast cancer awareness month. In the US, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis for women and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. We are all familiar with the pink ribbon that symbolizes breast cancer, but if you're curious about how the pink ribbon came to be, Pink Ribbon.org has the story of how the symbol originated. You may not know that the color of the ribbon was initially peach as part of a grassroots effort to gain awareness in the 90s. The pink ribbon was later formalized through the efforts of Evelyn Lauder of Estee Lauder and former Self magazine editor in Chief Alexandra Penney to provide programmatic support to breast cancer awareness. While much progress has been made in awareness and treatments, it's important to remember that breast cancer does not discriminate. Take good care of yourself and get those checkups.
