Flower Power

Monday, Feb 28th, 2022

Flowers are a form of endearment. We use them to cheer people up, give encouragement, say sorry, and even purchase them to brighten our own day. Flowers are also vital to everyday life and play a very important part in our ecosystem. The survival of plant species and their reproduction relies on the pollen from flowers and species such as bees.

Floral designs say a lot without saying anything at all. Did you know that the color of flowers have special meanings? For example, red is for love, yellow signifies friendship, white expresses sympathy, and pink signals appreciation. Flower bouquets are important touches to significant events such as weddings, memorials, and even prom! The most common flowers found in floral arrangements are roses, tulips, sunflowers, and daffodils. Some people even choose to keep their floral design forever, by drying out their flowers. A tutorial can be found here!

Creating your own floral design can be tricky! You need to know which flowers complement each other, how to properly cut the stem, how to choose the right size of flowers, and when to change the water. Lucky for you, we have a Zazzle Ideas article on how to “Make Grocery Store Flowers Look Like They Came From a Florist!” And if you’d much rather have floral designs delivered straight to your door, check out this Vogue article for the best flower subscription services. Either way, we hope you celebrate this floral design day with, you guessed it, some gorgeous flowers!

Polar Bear Plunge

Sunday, Feb 27th, 2022

Give it up for the largest and most powerful carnivore on land, the polar bear! Polar bears are a truly remarkable species. They're not known to have any natural predators, and they're not afraid of humans, allowing these bears to rule the Arctic. With that said, it comes as no surprise that these exceptional bears have a day dedicated to them: today, International Polar Bear Day!

Did you know that polar bears are superior swimmers? Adult polar bears can swim from several hours to days at a time as they hunt for seals. Polar bears have a thick layer of fat that provides warmth while in the cold, harsh water. Believe it or not, despite what you may think, polar bears are actually black, not white. It’s their translucent fur that gives them the appearance of being white, as it reflects light.

Climate change is affecting these incredible bears. As the earth continues to heat up, it shrinks the Arctic sea where polar bears live. This then requires polar bears to travel longer distances to find surfaces. It also makes it harder for them to hunt, which causes their health to deteriorate.

Worldwildlife.org also reports we are seeing fewer cubs being born as some polar bears suffer from malnutrition. This is why it’s now more important than ever to fight climate change! Show your love for polar bears by visiting the officially licensed Getty Images store, where you'll find many beautiful polar bear products!

Let's Battle Loneliness With Love... And Letters!

Saturday, Feb 26th, 2022

On December 7 of last year, we urged you to grab your pen and attempt to rediscover the lost art of letter writing. We hope that you were successful, because you’ll need that same implement and that same art again today—but for a much more important purpose. Today is Letter to an Elder Day.

Following the death of his grandfather in 2013, a teenage boy named Jacob Cramer began volunteering at his local senior living community and was saddened by the loneliness he witnessed there. In response, he founded a non-profit organization dedicated to alleviating loneliness among senior citizens called Love for the Elderly, which was later renamed Love for our Elders. While the organization takes part in numerous activities—from video messaging to the facilitation of in-person volunteering—letter writing is at the heart of its efforts, and so, in 2020, they launched Letter to an Elder Day to raise awareness and recruit new volunteers. At present, their team is over 50,000 strong, with volunteers across 70 countries, but they could always use another member.

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, a period during which senior citizens were more isolated than ever before, the good work of Love for our Elders is particularly important.

If you’d like to get involved in their letter-writing campaign today, or any other day, visit LoveForOurElders.Org to learn more. And, if you need supplies, think of Zazzle for all your pen and postcard needs!

Did you know that the world’s largest clock faces can be found at the Abraj Al-Bait hotel complex in Mecca, Saudi Arabia? Located on each of the four sides of the Makkah Clock Royal Tower—the complex’s central skyscraper and itself the third tallest building in the world—there’s a clock face measuring an incredible 141ft in diameter. To put that into perspective, each of these four clock faces dwarfs the more famous timepiece found at the Elizabeth Tower in London—often referred to as Big Ben—which measures just 23ft in diameter and is all the way down at number 33 on the list of the world’s largest clock faces. At 10.75” in diameter, our large clocks don’t crack the list, but because you can add your own personal messages and cherished photos, Zazzle clocks can leave a big impression.

If you're looking for more interesting clock facts or would like to learn more about the history of timepieces, then check out this wonderfully informative article from Scientific American. But if you'd like to fast-forward to the shopping, go directly to our enchanting array of wall clocks!

Spice up Your Life on National Chili Day!

Thursday, Feb 24th, 2022

Two days ago was National Margarita Day, and today we feature the celebration of yet another concoction that may or may not have its origins south of the border, depending on which apocryphal origin story you tend to believe: chili! That’s right, today is National Chili Day!

There’s a great deal of debate surrounding chili, its origins, and its traditions. Some say chili originated in Mexico and goes back to the Aztecs, while others claim chili was first cooked by Canary Islanders planted in San Antonio in the 1730s. A few people may even believe the recipe was created by the Jumano Indians and gifted to an entranced Spanish nun who was transported to a Texas convent by angels! The fiercest debate in chili circles, however, revolves around one ingredient: beans! One side of the divide argues that beans aren’t traditional, but the other sees them as an essential and authentic ingredient. The Chili Appreciation Society makes their feelings on the matter crystal clear, stating “BEANS ARE SIMPLY NOT WELCOME!” The hosts of the annual World Championship Chili Cook-Off, the International Chili Society, have taken a different approach, recently opening the door to bean devotees by allowing the controversial ingredient in their Homestyle category.

Whatever your feelings about these debates, there’s no denying that chili is now one of the most popular dishes in the world, and worth celebrating! If you’d like to cook up a batch for the occasion, check out this wonderful list of recipes over at Taste of Home. You can also pick up a custom chili bowl to eat it from right here at Zazzle!

Once Upon a Tile...

Wednesday, Feb 23rd, 2022

Today, folks, we celebrate National Tile Day! That’s right, National Tile Day! Can we get a whoop, whoop for National Tile Day? No? Ok, some of you might scoff at the idea of celebrating the humble tile, but we think there’s reason aplenty to acknowledge this historically significant building material with its very own day. Not convinced? Read on!

Glazed bricks and faience tiles, the ancient predecessors of modern ceramic tiles, originated in the Middle East. Examples of both, dating back to the 14th century BCE, were discovered at Chongha Zanbil in modern-day Iran in the 1950s and ‘60s. However, according to the Met Museum, faience first appeared in Egypt all the way back in the fifth millennium BCE. These tiles were used to decorate tombs and temples, or to create sculptures, jewelry, and ritual items. Some of the most spectacular ancient tile work can be found at the Ishtar Gate of Babylon, and in the wonderful mosaics of Ancient Greece and Rome. However, you don’t have to look to the ancient world for breath-taking examples of tile work, as those who have witnessed the splendor of the Nebraska State Capitol Building or New York’s Old City Hall Subway Station can attest.

If we’ve converted you into a real tile nut, and you’d like to celebrate National Tile Day, head over to Coverings.com to learn more. You could also consider installing tiles in your own home. They are, after all, durable, versatile, easy to clean, and free from plastic and PVC, so check out our very own selection of decorative tiles! Happy National Tile Day!

Start Searchin' for Your Lost Shaker of Salt

Tuesday, Feb 22nd, 2022

Get ready for a zesty burst of flavor, because today is National Margarita Day! ‘Margarita Day—in February?’ we hear you ask. While the winter does seem like an unusual time to celebrate a drink synonymous with warm weather and sunshine, we’re not going to protest. After all, there’s no better way to brighten up a cold, dark evening than sipping a cocktail that’s pure summer in a glass!

The history of the Margarita is hazy, to say the least. Over the years, many people have been identified as the inventor of the famed tequila cocktail—from Mexican bartenders in the 1930s to Texas socialites in the ‘40s—with each origin story including colorful yet plausible details. One famous tale claims that Baja California restaurateur Carlos ‘Danny’ Herrera invented the cocktail for a customer named Marjorie King, who was allergic to all hard liquor except tequila. Yet another theory even suggests it was first concocted for Hollywood starlet Rita Hayworth, whose real name was Margarita Carmen Cansino. Separating fact from folklore is no easy task, but what we can say with confidence is that the Margarita surged in popularity throughout the second half of the 20th century to become one of the most famous drinks on the planet.

If you’d like to celebrate National Margarita Day in style, check out these wonderful recipes over at TheCookieRookie.com. And for future celebrations, keep in mind that Zazzle carries a whole selection of individually packaged drink mixes. Well, would you look at that, it’s 5 o’clock (somewhere): time to take a trip to Margaritaville! We sincerely hope you’re not still searchin’ for your lost shaker of salt.

Happy Presidents' Day!

Monday, Feb 21st, 2022

It’s the third Monday in February and that can mean only one thing… well, actually, it can mean a number of different things, depending on where you live in these United States. Today is popularly known as Presidents’ Day, but this holiday’s official name and meaning vary greatly from place to place. Let’s delve into a little history, shall we?

Though the focus tends to be on two presidents in particular—George Washington and Abraham Lincoln—Presidents’ Day is often seen as honoring each of the 46 men who have held office. However, it started out solely as a day of remembrance for Washington, and originally fell on February 22—his birthday. When the Uniform Monday Holiday Act took effect in 1971, the date was changed to the third Monday of February, which happened to be closer to Lincoln's birthday on February 12. It was after this reform, according to History.com, that the shift towards the use of the term ‘Presidents’ Day’ and a more inclusive celebration began. Subsequent marketing campaigns advertising ‘Presidents’ Day sales’ also had an impact on public perception, and by the noughties, as many as half the US states had adopted the name Presidents’ Day. Others have kept the federal government’s official name, which remains Washington’s Birthday, while one state, Arkansas, has even expanded the holiday to honor a notable figure who is not a former president—civil rights activist Daisy Gatson Bates.

Wherever you are today, whatever you call this wonderful holiday, and whoever it is that you’re celebrating, we hope that you have a lot of fun—and maybe a little cherry pie! If you decide to host a little get-together for a future Presidents’ Day—or any other occasion for that matter—check out some party décor or some placemats for a dinner worthy of the Founding Fathers, right here at Zazzle!

It's Pawty Time!

Sunday, Feb 20th, 2022

There’s never a bad day to show some love for your furry—or, perhaps, scaly—friend, but today calls for a little extra effort because it’s February 20, also known as National Love Your Pet Day!

We’re sure you don’t need to be given a list of reasons why your pet deserves special treatment today, and all days—that cutesy-wootsy, wubby-dubby little face of theirs is enough reason, after all. However, it’s worth remembering just how much these guys enhance our lives in so many ways—some obvious, some not. For example, the CDC website even acknowledges that studies have shown an association between owning a pet and the following health benefits:

-Decreased blood pressure, cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels, feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and symptoms of PTSD.

-Increased opportunities for exercise and outdoor activities; better cognitive function in older adults; and more opportunities to socialize.

review published in 2017, which analyzed the findings of some 22 studies, also concluded that “pet ownership may be beneficial to child and adolescent emotional, cognitive, behavioral, educational and social development.” In addition, interaction with pets has been shown to benefit kids with a range of illnesses and disorders, from ADHD and autism spectrum disorders to diabetes.

So, with all that said, we encourage you to unleash those pawternal or meowternal instincts, and start pampering your pet right away! Consider bringing them on extra-long walkies over their favorite stomping ground, spoiling them with a pet subscription, immortalizing them on your mantel with a portrait, or picking them up some gifts and supplies from Zazzle! Whatever you do though, show them woof!

Feasts for The Senses

Saturday, Feb 19th, 2022

It’s 2022, and two years of Microsoft Teams have left your social calendar looking decidedly empty. April’s blank. June is a no-go. October is a clear, white sheet.

We have an idea, however, and it involves attending a festival. Festivals play an important role in culture: according to Britannica, “the commemoration of many events – religious, agricultural, or sociocultural – helps to keep traditions alive.” But since everyone knows the Cannes Film Festival, Burning Man, and St. Patrick’s Day, what about participating in one of “7 Unique Festivals You May Not Know About”? Learn about Batalla del Vino, an oenophilia-themed festival in the wine-producing region of La Riojo, Spain. Go to Taiwan during the spring, and you’ll see colored lights dotted across the landscape, as part of the Lantern Festival. You could even make a cross-country trip to West Virginia, in pursuit of the elusive Mothman!

The possibilities are endless, and our recommended reading list is as long. Prepare for March 17 with our article on “Unusual St. Patrick’s Day Traditions,” which also comprises events and parades to attend. Educate yourself on “The Origins of Halloween,” which are rooted in Celtic festivals from 2,500 years ago. Or simply put together a checklist that matches our “How to Pack and Prepare for a Music Festival” article! Your schedule is looking busier already!

Pisces Season!

Friday, Feb 18th, 2022

Would you describe yourself as gentle and intuitive? Do you think that you’re a hopeless romantic, always head-over-heels (and that head is in the clouds, too)? And lastly, would you count dancing and writing among your talents and interests? If you answered yes to all the above questions, then you might be a Pisces! Did we guess correctly?

Pisceans are born between the 19th of February and the 20th of March, and the Pisces constellation is located in the northern sky, between Aries and Aquarius. Known as being the last sign of the zodiac, Pisceans are friendly people, often finding themselves mixing with lots of different groups. They also have incredible empathy and emotional intelligence, even if this can lead them to be slightly melancholy and overly trusting of others. Pisceans do best in professions that require them to be creative and compassionate, so they’re drawn to becoming doctors, veterinarians, musicians, and painters.

Are you looking to celebrate your Piscean pal? Well, lucky for you, we’ve reeled in a few gift ideas that you’re sure to fall for, hook, line, and sinker. Check out our “Great Gift Ideas for Pisces” article on Zazzle Ideas, and you won’t find yourself fishing for hints much longer!

The Kindness of Strangers

Thursday, Feb 17th, 2022

Today’s moment is a particularly heartwarming affair: it’s February 17, or Random Acts of Kindness Day! In the spirit of this wholesome holiday, we’re encouraging you to compliment a stranger, donate anonymously to charity, write a letter to an elderly person, help a neighbor with their errands, or whatever else you can do to share the love. Kindness begets kindness, after all, and doing good will do you good!

Random Acts of Kindness Day is actually the brainchild of the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, which was founded in Denver, Colorado, in 1995. The non-profit organization accepts no grants or donations – it’s entirely privately funded – but exists purely to “Make Kindness the Norm.” The RAK website provides kindness challenges, calendars (where each day has an act of kindness for you to perform), and inspirational quotes for you to download, so you’ll never be short of ideas or motivation!

Random Acts of Kindness Day is only one part of Random Acts of Kindness Week (February 13 - February 19, 2022). To help you develop your altruistic streak, then, why not check out our “50 Random Acts of Kindness” article on Zazzle Ideas, where we’ve come up with lots of easy ways to practice benevolence. Encanto Appreciation Day!

Wednesday, Feb 16th, 2022

Since its theatrical debut on November 24, 2021, and its subsequent release on Disney+ in December, Disney’s Encanto has attracted a lot of attention. The 60th entry in the Disney Animated Canon tells the tale of Mirabel Madrigal, the sole member of an extended family that hasn’t been blessed with supernatural powers. Ever since we were introduced to Mirabel, Luisa, and Isabela, then, audiences have actually talked A LOT about Bruno (despite what the song would have you believe).

What’s so special about Encanto? Well, for starters, the songs were written by Emmy, Grammy, and Tony award-winning director, Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda drew inspiration from Colombian culture while working on the soundtrack, and the animators and writers also utilized the country’s rich geography, history, and culture when working on the movie.

If you feel like sharing the amor with every member of your own casita, then head to Zazzle’s officially licensed store for Disney’s Encanto. ‘Encanto,’ in Spanish, means ‘charm, spell, or enchantment,’ so we trust you’ll be appropriately captivated by these designs! Every character is represented here, along with a range of colorful quotes and patterns; check out our selection now, and bestow ‘gifts’ upon your entire family!

The Grand Reveal!

Tuesday, Feb 15th, 2022

Gender reveals are a relatively new phenomenon – blogger Jenna Karvunidis started the trend in 2008 – but they’ve already become a popular tradition. Whether through candles, cakes, or themed cards, the aim of the event is to disclose the sex of the baby, and in 2022, when in-person parties seem possible again, it might be time to start planning such an occasion!

Those of you expecting late-lockdown babies should, therefore, take a look at our “25 Gender Reveal Ideas You’ll Want to Try in 2022” article on Zazzle Ideas. Here, we introduce some unique ways in which to reveal the baby’s gender, and explain how to make your announcement particularly memorable. Of course, if you feel that basing an entire party around a baby’s birth-assigned gender, and the characteristics associated with that gender, is slightly outdated, we completely understand! That’s why we’ve included some gender-neutral games to help you add a modern, unconventional twist to your gender reveal party.

According to psychologist Nick Hobson, gender reveals – and especially, perhaps, the deliberate way in which the gender is revealed – are akin to rituals. “Pregnancy and labor is basically an exercise in managing massive amounts of stress and uncertainty,” Hobson says, but rituals like the gender reveal lend order and structure to the chaos. With all that in mind, then, why not order some of our gender reveal invitations and gender reveal décor? Step right this way, boys and girls!

Love Is All-Around

Monday, Feb 14th, 2022

It’s February 14, otherwise known as Valentine’s Day, and that means love is in the air. Romantic partners everywhere are holding hands, preparing candlelit dinners, and weeping openly over rom-coms. Probably. So spread out that picnic blanket, scatter rose petals around the bath, and listen to us whisper ‘sweet nothings’ in your ear over the course of Today’s Moment.

According to History.com, sources are divided as to the identity of ‘Valentine.’ Some sources state that he was a priest who served to perform outlawed marriages between Roman soldiers; others suggest that he was a person who rescued prisoners of the Roman Empire. It’s also thought that Valentine’s Day takes place in mid-February due to an ancient Roman festival known as Lupercalia, which occurred on February 15th. Following a pilgrimage to the cave where the founders of Rome, Romulus, and Remus, were supposedly raised by a wolf, a match-making ceremony was held. When Christianity spread throughout the Roman Empire, it’s likely that both the theme – and the timing – of the ritual were appropriated for St. Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day cards have been given and received in the U.S. since about the 1700s, and in the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began distributing mass-produced cards in America. If you’re struggling with what to write in your own card, however, check out our “What to Write in a Valentine’s Day Card” article, where we channel our inner Don Juan, and our “Will You Be My Valentine Ideas & Gifts” article, where we’ll help you become a real Casanova!

Ladies Celebrating Ladies!

Sunday, Feb 13th, 2022

It’s Valentine’s Day-eve, and that can only mean one thing: it’s Galentine’s Day, and an opportunity for women everywhere to acknowledge and celebrate their most meaningful friendships. Rather than a substitute for Valentine’s Day, however, Galentine’s is meant to complement February 14, as we set aside time for equally-as-important platonic relationships.

Galentine’s Day isn’t yet an official holiday, and at one point, it was entirely fictional! In the second season of the sitcom Parks and Recreation, the character Leslie Knope – played by Amy Poehler – announced her plans for a pre-Valentine’s Day brunch with her gal pals. The afternoon would be full of drinks, waffles, and declarations of love and admiration for her fellow women, and it was a sentiment that resonated with viewers. Even retailers, websites, and celebrities have chimed in, encouraging Galentine’s Day parties and Galentine’s Day gifts.

According to The Atlantic, “friendships [... help] to define people’s sense of themselves in the world. During a time of emergent adulthood and geographic mobility, friendships are lending stability – and meaning – to people’s [...] lives.” That’s without even mentioning the impact that strong friendships can have on your physical, mental, and emotional health. This year, then, we recommend gathering together your best friends – they don’t even necessarily have to be female! – on February 13, and remembering what it’s like, after the last two years, to be in a room full of your favorite people.

It’s National Inventors’ Day!

Friday, Feb 11th, 2022

Falling on February 11th, National Inventors’ Day aims to celebrate inventors - worldwide, and from the past and the present! From Nikola Tesla to Marie Curie, they all deserve to be honored for their innovation and the important advancements that they've brought to our world.

Without inventors, we wouldn't be able to take photographs, fly in a plane, call a friend on the phone, see a movie, or refrigerate our food! In 1983, President Ronald Reagan declared the 11th of February as National Inventors' Day; the date was chosen as it was Thomas Edison's birthday. There are many ways to take part in National Inventors’ Day. You could read about the top inventors and their inventions that changed society, watch a documentary about a famous inventor, and, of course, put your own ideas to work!

To help you get started, we think this article by ThoughtCo on “History's 15 Most Popular Inventors” is a great read. Put on your thinking cap, because your ideas might just change the world someday!

Send Some Love!

Monday, Feb 7th, 2022

It’s Send a Card to A Friend Day! Everybody loves receiving cards, no matter the occasion! In today’s digital world, cards have become rare. We firmly believe that a thoughtful greeting card can brighten up even the dullest of days.

Whether you’d like to congratulate somebody on an achievement, thank a friend for helping you out, or simply let a loved one know you're thinking of them, sending a card is the winning ticket.

Did you know that the first paper greeting cards appear to have been sent by Europeans in the 15th century? Wood engravers made inscribed prints that had the same function as modern-day Christmas and New Year’s cards. Then, in 1860, greeting cards started to be made commercially, becoming cheaper and more widely available. These days, annual sales of greeting cards in the US are estimated to be between $7 and $8 billion!

To participate in this national day, all you’ll need to do is pick out the perfect card and send it to a friend! At Zazzle, we have a greeting card for just about anyone. From funny greeting cards for friends to romantic greeting cards for your significant other, we’ve got you covered.

Time to Have a Ball

Sunday, Feb 6th, 2022

Get your dips ready, because this is nacho average football game! Whether you’re a football fanatic, looking forward to chowing down on some delectable snacks or just enjoy the spectacular halftime shows, Super Bowl Sunday is a fun-filled day for everyone.

While the NFL was officially formed in 1920, the Super Bowl wasn't played until over 40 years afterward. Back in 1960, a group of businessmen wanted to own football franchises but were denied by the NFL, so they opted to launch an opposing league called the American Football League (AFL). The NFL and AFL were rivals until 1966 when an agreement was made to combine the leagues. After this, the first-ever Super Bowl which featured the AFL and NFL was played on January 15th, 1967, with the first halftime show showcasing trumpeter Al Hirt.  Today, the Super Bowl is broadcast in more than 170 countries and is one of the most-watched sporting events in the world.

The Super Bowl is always better with family and friends! If you’re planning to host a party on the big day next year, check out our kickin’ custom Super Bowl invitations that will seriously impress your guests.

It’s the news you all have been waiting for! That’s right, Hershey’s chocolate is NOW on Zazzle! And the timing couldn't be better as Valentine's Day is just around the corner. So pucker up and get ready to send some kisses!

Hershey’s was first established in 1894, as Lancaster Caramel Company located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania However, it wasn't until 1900 that the company sold the caramel company and moved into chocolate, this same year Hershey’s sold its first chocolate bar. This is a far cry from the distinctive flavors and branding that we are used to today. From its formation, the company has achieved some major milestones, from listing on the New York Stock Exchange in 1927 to opening Hershey’s Chocolate World in 1973.

As we all know, chocolate is a girl's best friend, and here at Zazzle, it's our aim to help you become better acquainted! Treat your special someone with ‘Be Mine’ Hershey miniatures or retro Valentine Hershey kisses. You’d be ecstatic to know that Hershey’s also owns Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and you guessed it, we have those too! Hershey Kisses come in 10 different foil colors, including one that features almonds! Not only are these treats ideal for Valentine’s Day but they can be used in party and wedding favors too!

Year of the Tiger

Thursday, Feb 3rd, 2022

Today is February 3rd and that means Chinese New Year is already in full swing. This celebration starts on February 1st and lasts over 15 days within Chinese communities. According to legend, a monster named Nian, which is the Chinese word for ‘year,’ attacked and tormented villagers at the beginning of each year. This s believed to have started about 3,500 years ago. Loud noises such as fireworks, the color red, and bright lights were all used to keep Nian away and protect the villages. To this day, Chinese New Year is celebrated with firecrackers, fireworks, and the color red.

According to ChineseNewYear.com, there are 12 years that make up the Chinese calendar. Each of these years are represented by animals: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. This year, 2022 is the year of the Tiger. It’s believed there is a connection between people and the qualities of each animal in the Chinese zodiac. For instance, those born in the year of Tiger are said to be competitive, confident, and tempestuous.

How can you celebrate Chinese New Year? We recommend looking up what animal is associated with you by your year of birth and learning more about it. This can easily be done here! Will There Be a Shadow?

Wednesday, Feb 2nd, 2022

Every February 2nd, the groundhogs come out to play, for they're on a mission, and we can't wait to hear what they say. According to tradition, when a groundhog emerges from its hole, one of two things may happen: it sees its shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter; or alternatively, it sees no shadow, which means an early spring.

So where did Groundhog Day come from? Don’t you think it’s a bit odd that there is a day when we all wait for an animal to predict our next six weeks? According to History.com, a similar tradition started in Europe as Christianity spread. It's said that, if it was sunny during the Christian feast of Candlemas, then it would be cold for another 40 days. Germans, in particular, had their own take on Candlemas, as they observed small animals and the shadow they cast to predict the length of winter. They brought this tradition to the U.S. as they emigrated in the 18th and 19th centuries, choosing a groundhog to be the official meteorologist.

Although it may seem like a silly tradition, many across the U.S. and Canada look forward to the festivities that this day brings. Not only does it make headlines on TV and in the papers, but schools also participate in the event, making groundhog arts and crafts and encouraging Groundhog Day apparel, like this shirt on February 2nd. With all this in mind, have you checked the result today? Will it be another 6 weeks of winter or early spring in 2022?

A Month to Acknowledge

Tuesday, Feb 1st, 2022

African American History Month, otherwise known as Black History Month, is a time to reflect on African American accomplishments – including their fight for equality – and takes place in the month of February. During this month, the past and current struggles of African Americans are recognized, along with their continual pursuit of freedom and their role in U.S. history.

Today, African American History Month is recognized not only in the U.S. but in other countries around the world. Some of these countries include Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands. But where did it all start? According to National Geographic, African American History Month started only as a week-long event back in 1926, as a reaction to the “lack of information on the accomplishments of Black people available to the public.” It wasn't until 1976 that February was finally declared Black History Month, and it has been celebrated in February ever since.

Although we encourage you to take time and educate yourself about black history every month of the year, doing so in February could be a good start. We recommend this article to learn more about the origin of African American History Month. And if you’ll be attending any marches, conferences, or just want to pay tribute, browse through our many African American History Month designs.
