Moments of creativity, celebration, trends, and unique occasions. For every day of the week.

Snow Much Fun!

Monday, Jan 31st, 2022

We’ve finally made it to the last day in January and we’re all in a little need of a holiday. If you're thinking of snow and slopes start packing your winter travel bag with a few essentials in mind.

Layer Up: Snow doesn’t take long to fall and it sometimes snows when you least expect it. For this reason, it’s best to always be prepared and dress for the weather.

Moisturizer Is Key: The winter months bring a much drier climate, so be sure to pack chapstick and moisturizer to avoid dry and cracked skin.

Be Prepared: There’s nothing worse than arriving at the ski hill only to learn that all the equipment has been rented out. Don’t leave that to chance, and prebook your equipment, skis, and lift tickets.

Charge It: The brutal cold can drain your batteries faster than normal. Fully charge your device’s battery every night. You never know when you’ll have to rely on your phone to look up directions. You can even invest in a custom charging station, which allows up to 7 devices to charge at once.

NBCnews.com provides “5 Good Reasons to Go Outside, Even When It’s Freezing,” AND all 5 of these reasons can be achieved by traveling in the winter. So what are you waiting for? Are you finished packing that suitcase? Because it’s time to hit the road!

It's National ______ Day!

Saturday, Jan 29th, 2022

Today, we celebrate a rather fun little occasion. In keeping with the spirit of that occasion, we’re not going to come straight out and tell you what day it is. Instead, we’re going to give you a clue to help you fill in the blank below.

National _____ Day.

Clue: A game, toy, or problem designed to test ingenuity or knowledge (6).

If you haven’t solved it yet, we’ll give you one more hint. The word we’re looking for begins with the letter ‘p’ and often follows the words ‘jigsaw’ or ‘crossword.’

Have you pieced it together yet? Of course, you have. Today is National Puzzle Day!

Puzzles are a fun way to pass the time, but they’re so much more than a mere form of entertainment. Making jigsaw puzzles, for example, is a wonderful bonding activity for all the family. Meanwhile, playing with puzzles of all kinds can have a whole host of benefits for the developing minds of children, such as improved hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, shape recognition, and problem-solving ability. Some studies have suggested that older adults can also improve cognitive function with the aid of various puzzles and brain games, but this remains a subject of debate within the scientific community. However, puzzles can have other positive effects on older people. As this Forbes article notes, puzzles can help reduce stress and create positive outlooks, while group games can offer opportunities for stimulating social interaction.

With all that said, we encourage you to celebrate National Puzzle Day by solving a Sudoku puzzle, by filling in a crossword over breakfast with your beau, or by bringing your nearest and dearest together to complete a jigsaw! Have fun!

This One's Flor-al You Daisy Lovers Out There!

Friday, Jan 28th, 2022

Today we celebrate a remarkable little flower that has captured the human imagination like few others: the daisy! That’s right Zazzlers, today is National Daisy Day!

A symbol of innocence and purity, the daisy has long been picked to make chains and crowns for children, and has had its petals plucked wistfully by lovesick youngsters for centuries. While we use the term daisy as if we’re referring to a single flowering plant, the reality is that you could be playing ‘they love me, they love me not’ with a number of different species. Around 38 distinct flowers include the word ‘daisy’ in their name, and many people use the term to describe any flower from the massive Asteraceae family—which numbers upwards of 20,000 species!

With so much choice and variety, then, the perfect way to celebrate National Daisy Day is to plant some of these enchanting flowers in your own garden. Check out Masterclass for a step-by-step guide to growing and caring for daisies. Alternatively, you can peruse Zazzle’s ever-blossoming selection of floral gifts and pick something for the daisy-lover in your life!

International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Thursday, Jan 27th, 2022

While we generally like to keep things fun here on Today’s Moment, we also believe it’s important to mark certain more solemn and somber occasions in a fitting manner. Today is one of those occasions, and a hugely significant day on the international calendar, as we remember one of the darkest periods in human history.

On this day 76 years ago, the Soviet army liberated the concentration and extermination camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau. In doing so, they began to reveal the true horror of the atrocities carried out under Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime. As the years passed, we learned that an estimated 6 million Jewish and 5 million non-Jewish peoples were killed during what became known as the Holocaust, while countless others carried, and continue to carry, the scars of what they endured during this time.

In 2005, to both commemorate this date and honor those who suffered—there, at Auschwitz-Birkenau, as well as at Bełżec, Chełmno, Majdanek, Sobibór, Treblinka, and elsewhere—the United Nations declared January 27 International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Today, however, is not simply a day for remembrance, but also for building towards a better tomorrow and for educating people about these past atrocities so that we might avoid future genocides like those that occurred in Europe in the ‘30s and ‘40s—as well as those that, unfortunately, and unbelievably, continue to occur in parts of the world today.

If you’d like to learn more about the Holocaust, you can visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum website at www.ushmm.org.

A Day to Celebrate Your One and Only!

Wednesday, Jan 26th, 2021

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, Cupid is happily loading his quiver in anticipation of a busy spell, and romantics everywhere are beginning to feel the excitement. However, if you’re married, there’s no need to wait until February 14 to celebrate your love, because today is National Spouses Day!

According to a study published in the Journal of Marriage and Family back in 2015, married couples are twice as happy when they’re together as when they’re not. However, due to work commitments, parenting duties, hobbies, and more, finding opportunities to spend time together isn’t always easy. Not to mention the fact that distractions like TV, the internet, and social media can often dilute the quality of the time couples do spend alone together. That’s why an occasion like National Spouses Day is so important: it’s a little reminder to appreciate and enjoy what you have.

If you’d like to take this opportunity to reconnect with your spouse, you can spend a cozy night in completing a puzzle together while enjoying a glass of wine, you can revisit the site of your first date, or you can simply cook their favorite meal. If none of this floats your proverbial boat, you can also check out this list of 44 Great Date Ideas to Keep Your Marriage Fresh for more inspiration!

This Is the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius!

Tuesday, Jan 25th, 2022

Somewhere between January 19 and 20, the sun entered the fixed air sign symbolized by the water bearer, and that means Aquarius season is upon us! How exactly the sun’s progression through this constellation will affect your life depends very much on your own star sign, but if you’d like to embrace the energy of the season, we’ve got a couple of suggestions for you to consider.

Aquarians are notoriously free-spirited and anti-convention, and these traits can often be seen in the clothes they wear. 2022 is still fresh, and you might yet be in that ‘New Year, New You’ mindset, so why not mix things up by experimenting with a more adventurous fashion sense? Aiming to bring about positive change in the world—whenever and wherever you can—is an even more worthwhile goal for the year ahead. Aquarians are idealistic and independent-minded folks of great intellect, and their outside-the-box thinking is often focused on humanitarian concerns. So, over the coming weeks, ask yourself how you too might be able to benefit the greater good.

If you’re reading this and it’s reminded you that an Aquarius friend has a birthday coming up, we can help with that too! Over at Zazzle Ideas, you'll find a handy list of great gifts for that water bearer in your life!

With Compliments From Zazzle

Monday, Jan 24th, 2022

Hello, wonderful Zazzlers! Did you know that today, January 24, is National Compliment Day? Wait, what are we saying? Look who we're talking to. Of course, you knew that. After all, you guys are just the smartest folks around! Nevertheless, if you’d like to increase that vast knowledge of yours, read on to find out more!

Compliments aren’t exactly in abundance in day-to-day life, but why is that? Interestingly, recent studies suggest that we are reluctant to pay compliments to others because of social anxiety. According to research published in 2020, which analyzed the findings of 5 separate studies, people tend to underestimate the positive impact a compliment can have, while they also overestimate the potential for making the other person feel uncomfortable. “People generally don’t realize that something so small could have such a big impact,” Vanessa Bohn, a professor of social psychology and one of the study’s authors, told the BBC. “They [participants in the studies] felt like this interaction was going to go super awkwardly, and that they would be kind of clumsy in their delivery.’ However, the findings of the analysis suggest that these fears are unfounded, and that our compliments really do make a difference.”

Now that you’re privy to this information, there’s every reason to celebrate National Compliment Day the way it was meant to be celebrated! Whether it’s a friend, family member, co-worker, or even a complete stranger, give somebody—or multiple people—a sincere compliment, and then bask in the knowledge that you’ve brightened their day. If you’re still a bit shy or unsure of what to say in person, why not express yourself with a custom gift from Zazzle? You can take your time and add whatever text you like, so you can really get the message across!

On the Write Track!

Sunday, Jan 23rd, 2022

Handwriting styles differ greatly from person to person; they’re almost as effective as fingerprints when it comes to identifying someone. Is yours long and loopy, or thin and spidery? Maybe it’s elegant and old-fashioned, or maybe it’s indecipherable chicken scratch! Regardless of your penmanship skills, we still encourage you to participate in the fun today, on the 45th National Handwriting Day!

January 23rd is John Hancock’s – U.S. founding father and prominent signatory of the Declaration of Independence – birthday, and since 1977, it’s also been National Handwriting Day. Sadly, handwriting is becoming something of a lost art, as schools, colleges, and workplaces move to a keyboard-driven, paperless environment. This is despite the numerous benefits that handwriting has for your mind and body: the tactile, deliberate movement of your pen across a page refines motor skills, accelerates cognitive development, and helps you to retain information.

Celebrating this holiday, which was officially endorsed by Congress in 2018, couldn’t be easier. You could write a letter to a friend or family member, learn how to perform calligraphy, or start keeping a journal. To help you with the last of those, you can check out our full range of customizable notebooks, or learn about the “Top 10 Handwriting Fonts” on Zazzle Ideas.

The Hotter the Better!

Saturday, Jan 22nd, 2022

In 1992, salsa replaced ketchup as the U.S.’s favorite condiment, having outsold the latter by about $40 million the previous year. Thirty years later, that’s still a blistering achievement, and it’s one which we celebrate on January 22nd: National Hot Sauce Day!

Along with salt, vinegar, and sometimes fruits and vegetables, the main ingredient in hot sauce is chili pepper. The spiciness of hot sauce is dependent on where the chili peppers used to make it register on the Scoville scale, named after U.S. pharmacologist Wilbur Lincoln Scoville. Peppers are assigned a number of ‘Scoville units,’ with the easy-to-eat bell peppers ranking at 0 Scoville, and some of the hottest varieties in the world – such as the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion – earning a score of 1.2 million Scoville units.

While we don't yet have custom hot sauce for your dining pleasure, we DO sell hundreds of hot sauce-related gifts, if you’re hosting a particularly Picante barbecue or dinner party. It’s time to get swept up in the heat of Today's Moment, and make the most of National Hot Sauce Day!

A History of Hugging

Friday, Jan 21st, 2022

We get it: it’s been a difficult two years, and you’re in need of some solace. Well, you’ve come to the right place. Bring it in, everybody, because it’s National Hugging Day 2022, and Zazzle has a whole lot of love to share.

Created by Kevin Zaborney in 1986, National Hugging Day was envisioned as a way to counteract the relatively glum time in the calendar between Christmas and Valentine’s Day. Zaborney noticed that mid-January was a time when people tended to feel low in spirits, and he also thought that “Americans were often too embarrassed to show affection in public." By introducing National Hugging Day, Zaborney hoped to prompt more open displays of affection, which would, in turn, boost people's moods. The word ‘hug’ itself is derived from the Old Norse word ‘hugga,’ meaning ‘to comfort,’ and the act of the hug continues to be practiced every day. Notable huggers include Mata Amritanandamayi, a spiritual guru from southern India, and now known as ‘The Hugging Saint.’ Thousands of people make the pilgrimage to see her every year, anxious to be wrapped up in her warm embrace.

As you can see, we’re behind the idea of hugging wholeheartedly; but do remember to hug safely, given the pandemic and the rise of new variants. Once you’re aware of that, then we encourage you to partake in the celebrations right away. In other words, as this Today’s Moment draws to a close, we advise you to draw someone else close.

The Big Cheese

Thursday, Jan 20th, 2022

Cheesy puns are our specialty at Zazzle, and on National Cheese Lovers’ Day, we ensure they go from gouda to grate. If you’re a turophile – a Cheese lover, courtesy of the Greek words ‘tyros,’ meaning cheese, and ‘phile,’ meaning lover – then you’ll know that this particular holiday is cheddar than all the rest.

The exact origins of cheese making are hard to pinpoint. National Day Calendar notes that the earliest instance of cheese making can be traced to what is now Poland, in 5,500 BCE; meanwhile, Cheese House.com writes that there are depictions of cheese being made in ancient Egyptian tomb murals. However, it’s likely that cheese was discovered by accident, as humans began to domesticate animals like cows and goats. By 100 AD, cheese was a part of the average diet in the Roman Empire, but it would not spread to the U.S. until the 1600s.

We don’t sell cheese here yet– but our artisan stores, like Lifesong Milestones, do sell cheese boards, like this cute example. Furthermore, there are 18 other cheese-related holidays in the year, which you can read about on FTD by Design. Stay tuned to our Today’s Moment series, and check back often to see if more cheese puns have occ-curd to us!

Winter Weddings

Wednesday, Jan 19th, 2022

While it seems winter weddings have become more popular in recent years, December, January, and February can still very much be considered the wedding off-season. According to wedding website The Knot, only 9% of U.S. weddings take place in the winter—that’s compared to 15% in the month of September alone. Winter nuptials, however, can be magical, and they have a host of unique benefits.

Some of the major benefits of winter weddings, of course, are rooted in the very fact that they are quite uncommon. Less demand for venues means that you’ll have more options, and prices will often be negotiable. Your wedding will also stand out more, as people won’t be attending as many weddings as they do during the summer and fall. Another major point in the pro column for winter weddings is the opportunity they provide for wonderful photography, with festive décor and wintry landscapes offering beautiful background scenery both indoors and out.

It’s obviously too late to start planning a wedding for this winter, but if you’re thinking ahead to winter 2022, or even 2023, we can offer you a little guidance. To help you weigh up some of the other pros, as well as the inevitable cons, of a winter wedding, check out our “Should You Have a Winter Wedding?” over at Zazzle Ideas!

Any Day Spent With You Is My Favorite Day

Tuesday, Jan 18th, 2022

Oh, bother! Today’s a very important, cuddly day, but we can’t remember who it is we’re celebrating. Could it be the ridikkerous T-I-double-guh-er? Or the innocent P-p-p-iglet? Maybe it’s even something to do with Christopher Robin himself. Think, think, think!

Rest assured, we really do know it’s National Winnie the Pooh Day, when we raise a pot of honey to the “tubby little cubby all stuffed with fluff.” Pooh was created in 1926 by an English author named A.A. Milne, who based the character on a black bear he saw at the London Zoo. The bear hailed from Winnipeg, Canada, and had earned the nickname ‘Winnie’ as a result. Meanwhile, the other characters in the Hundred Acre Wood are based on A.A. Milne’s son’s soft toys and the wildlife of East Sussex, where the family lived.

A pivotal moment in Pooh’s career came in 1961, when the rights to the Winnie the Pooh characters were sold to the Walt Disney Company. In 1977, Disney released the animated film, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, and it’s this film – and the subsequent Pooh cartoons – that form the inspiration for many of our officially licensed products. Check out Disney’s Winnie the Pooh store on Zazzle, and see what you can learn from our red-shirted friend.

“I Have a Dream…”

Monday, Jan 17th, 2022

It was on August 28th, 1963, that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a march of 250,000 demonstrators to Washington, D.C., where, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, he spoke these famous words: “So even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream [...] I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” On January 17th, 2022 – the third Monday of the month – we remember these words, and the contributions of King to the Civil Rights Movement as a whole.

During the 1950s and 1960s, King orchestrated a number of non-violent protests against racial segregation and discrimination in the U.S. In 1965, activists marched from Selma, Alabama, to the state capital, Montgomery, in an attempt to secure voting rights for African Americans; 10 years earlier, and also in Montgomery, King led a bus boycott in response to segregated seating for African Americans. To acknowledge his contribution to the Civil Rights Movement, King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

Martin Luther King Day was first observed nationwide in 1986, and it was not until the year 2000 that the holiday was recognized in all 50 states. If you’d like to read more about why the federal holiday took so long to come to fruition, we recommend reading the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s article on the subject. Finally, since 1994, Martin Luther King Day has been labeled a ‘service’ day, which means that you should take this opportunity to volunteer in your community, living out the words of Dr. King, and helping his dream to become a reality.

Not for Nothing!

Sunday, Jan 16th, 2022

Until this point, every event or topic that we’ve covered in the Today’s Moment series has been something: a little-known holiday, a well-regarded figure from history, or a Zazzle.com highlight. But in order to celebrate January 16th or National Nothing Day, our hands are tied. To describe anything in detail is to undermine the concept of National Nothing Day.

We haven’t done any research. But according to TimeandDate.com, the day was conceived in 1973 by newspaper columnist Harold Pullman Coffin. Begun as a grumpy reaction to the number of commemorative days in the calendar, January 16th was to be a day “where [people] can just sit without celebrating, observing, or honoring anything.” Doing absolutely nothing is difficult, of course, because even doing nothing is to do something.

National Nothing Day is sponsored by the National Nothing Foundation, based in Capitola, California, and they have no recommendations as to how you should spend the day. Similarly, we haven’t compiled a list of activities for you to do, so you can’t take our advice. You could take a look at our hoodies and sweatshirts, as our casual loungewear might help you get into the spirit of National Nothing Day. Tomorrow, perhaps.

It's Hat Time Again!

Saturday, Jan 15th, 2022

Hats protect our faces from the hot sun, keep us warm in cold weather, and, of course, allow us to express our own unique style. National Hat Day is the perfect time to rock your favorite hat, whether it’s a baseball cap, a fedora, a beanie, or a beret!

Hats have been around for a very long time! Did you know it’s estimated that the first hats were invented long before 3,000 BC? A mural on an ancient Egyptian tomb in Thebes serves as some early evidence of hats, showing people wearing cone-shaped hats made from straw. This tomb dates back to 3,200 BC. Throughout history, hats have been worn to indicate class, for religious purposes, for uniform, for protection, and simply for fashion reasons. Different eras continue to see different hats rising in popularity, with the cloche hat being favored among women in the 1920s, the bowler hat being the top choice in the 1960s, and, in 2021, the baseball cap is the front-runner.

At Zazzle, we have a wide selection of fantastic, customizable hats! Take your pick from our embroidered hats, baseball caps, and performance hats, which can all be fully customized with your own artwork, logos, and imagery. Celebrate National Hat Day Today (and every day) with a one-of-a-kind personalized hat and look cap-tivating!

The argyle pattern was conceived in Argyll, Scotland, and was inspired by the tartan of Clan Campbell back in the 17th century. According to checkiday.com, Argyle's popularity grew when the Duke of Windsor, in the 1920s, began wearing argyle when he went golfing. Today, this design continues to be associated with golf. Orthodox Christmas

Friday, Jan 7th, 2022

For most of us, Christmas is already a thing of the past. The Christmas tree has come down and the rest of the decorations have been boxed up for next year. But for Orthodox Christians – mainly in Eastern European countries – Christmas has only begun, as today is Orthodox Christmas!

Orthodox Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ – at least according to the Julian calendar. Orthodox Christmas is also known as Old Christmas Day. There are 13 days between Old Christmas Day and what we now know as Christmas on December 25th. According to National Geographic, the 13 days before January 7th were eliminated when Pope Gregory XIII proposed a new calendar known as the Gregorian calendar. The majority of Christians adopted this new calendar, except for the Orthodox Church. According to Calendar, Orthodox Christmas isn't about exchanging gifts or decorating the tree; it focuses on religious rituals and traditions, and emphasizes the importance of peace and self-reflection.

Let us here at Zazzle help you with your Orthodox Christmas Day! You’ll find beautiful Orothdox Christmas-inspired Christmas decorations, including ornaments and holiday cards. You can even go as far as designing your own Orthodox paper plates, napkins, serving trays, table runners, and more!

Happy Orthodox Christmas Day!

Flock on Over!

Is there anything better than the sound of birds filling your ears and waking you up in the morning? Well today, out of all days, we hope that their sweet and innocent chirping is what welcomed you to this Wednesday morning, as today is National Bird Day!

Believe it or not, there are over 10,000 species of birds on Earth. According to Animal Fun Facts, the smallest bird, the bee hummingbird, is only 2.2 inches, while the largest bird is a whopping 9.1ft. Now that’s one big bird! Much like us human snowbirds who tend to choose to head south for the winter, real birds migrate too! You’ll often see flocks of birds spreading their wings and taking flight in a ‘V’ formation to escape the cold. For more fun facts about birds, check out Fun Kids!

Bird lovers, fly on over to Zazzle! We have a bird page dedicated strictly to bird designs! Here you’ll find ‘bird nerd’ mugs, Disney Princesses surrounded by colorful birds on a Christmas ornament, and flamingo luggage tags. And don’t forget everyone’s favorite bird, Big Bird, from our officially licensed Sesame Street store.

Hot or Not, It's Perihelion Day!

Tuesday, Jan 4th, 2022

Happy Perihelion Day! In case you’ve never heard of perihelion, this is the day in the year upon which the Earth is closest to the sun. This tends to happen each year about two weeks after the December solstice. For more information on the winter solstice, read our Today’s Moment from December 21st!

So if the Earth's closer to the sun today, shouldn’t we all be outside in shorts and a t-shirt soaking up the rays? Well, don’t pull out the sunscreen just yet! Forbes says that, although the sun is as close as it’ll be this year, the heat that hits the Southern Hemisphere is mostly absorbed into the oceans, and the Northern Hemisphere doesn’t feel the heat waves due to the tilt of the Earth’s axis. By contrast, Aphelion Day is known as the day the Earth is the furthest away from the sun. This happens roughly two weeks after the June Solstice.

So although it might not exactly be t-shirt weather, you can still sport a perihelion t-shirt today. Be sure to also check out some of our other space merchandise, including space postersgalaxy lamps, and everything you need to host a space-themed birthday party. You can even find postcards featuring the solar system and mugs with Halley’s comet on the officially licensed Getty Images store.

Remember back when you were a kid, filling pages upon pages of your treasured journal? You’d then immediately hide the journal as far as you could under your bed because you’d be mortified if anyone ever read it? But while these might be distant childhood memories, journaling isn't necessarily old-fashioned; today, journaling has become a trend, and with good reason! Many are now choosing to journal daily, not only as a hobby but because it's good for your health too! Some of these benefits include reducing stress, boosting your mood, and strengthening emotional functions.

Although there’s no right or wrong way to journal, choosing the right notebook can add to the inspiration. So choose a journal that makes you feel happy, one full of bright colors, or one that shows a picture of your dog. This, along with a pen, could be your introduction to a new daily routine – one that’s bound to bring some positivity to your life.
