What’s better than cookies? Sharing cookies with your friends and family! Roll up your sleeves and get baking, because it’s National Cookie Exchange Day!

National Cookie Exchange Day takes place annually on the 22nd of December. On this delicious day, cookies and cookie recipes are shared and swapped by many, whether it be between families, friends, or colleagues. This national day was officially coined by Jace Shoemaker-Galloway in 2015. However, it appears that Christmastime cookie exchanges originally took place in the Middle Ages: due to their price and rare ingredients, families could only afford to bake cookies once a year, and they often chose to share them out with neighbors during the season.

To take part in this national day, all you need to do is put on an apron, bake your favorite cookies – whether they're chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, or snickerdoodle – and share them! Some people even host cookie exchange parties or raise funds for charities through National Cookie Exchange Day. If you’d like to take your baking endeavors to the next level, check out our baking gifts, where we offer amazing items like custom stickers and labels for your cookie bags, personalized cake trays, and even edible, custom-printed frosting rounds

The Whimsical Winter Solstice

Tuesday, Dec 21st, 2021

Wrap up warm, and light your flickering candles, because today is the winter solstice! The winter solstice is the point at which the path of the sun in the sky is farthest south. Also known as the shortest day and the longest night of the year, the winter solstice marks the start of astronomical winter. Following the winter solstice, days slowly become longer and nights get shorter.

Human civilizations seem to have known about the winter solstice as early as 10,200 BC! We can see this by looking at impressive, Neolithic structures, like Newgrange in Ireland and Maeshowe in Scotland, which are aligned with the sunrise on the winter solstice. These structures may have served religious or spiritual purposes for the Neolithic people. The winter solstice is also viewed in many cultures as a time of rebirth and revival.

To see the effects of the winter solstice for yourself, go outside at noon and look down at your shadow: it’ll be the longest shadow that you’ll cast all year! People also like to take time to meditate or go on a long walk surrounded by nature during this time of year. Meanwhile, here at Zazzle, we like to celebrate each and every season of the year through giving! We offer some wonderful winter solstice gifts, from greeting cards to t-shirts, that will be sure to delight your friends and family.

Let’s See Those ‘To Do’ Lists!

Sunday, Dec 19th, 2021

How’re those holiday lists looking, folks? Gifts all purchased and wrapped? Outfits for the week all pressed and ready to go? You may feel a sudden urge to check off any items still on the list this week because Capricorn season is upon us!

As practical thinking, success-oriented earth signs, Capricorns are often the target of unfair zodiac stereotyping, but they have a lot of positive, motivational energy to offer. Capricorns are ruled by Saturn, the planet of boundaries and structure (hence all the ‘Capricorn coworker’ memes), which gives them an enviable ability to focus, work hard, and make steady, methodical progress in their lives. And with all the meals to prepare and relatives to host over the next few days, who among us couldn’t use some of that steadying energy? So how can you make the most of Capricorn season? Well, Capricorns are great upholders of tradition and are naturally family-oriented, so just enjoying the holidays is a great start! They’re also high achievers and good goal-setters, so why not use the season’s energy to set your New Year’s resolutions? Oh, and don’t forget to shower the Capricorns in your life with Capricorn gifts from Zazzle!

Christmas Traditions From Around the World

Saturday, Dec 18th, 2021

In the U.S., some common Christmas traditions include decorating Christmas trees, singing Christmas carols, and sending Christmas cards, but did you know that other countries have some different and very interesting Christmas traditions? At Zazzle we embrace the wide variety of Christmas traditions found across different parts of the world, and we've detailed a handful of our favorites in this "Christmas Traditions From Around the World" article!

One of the most well-known Christmas traditions, the decorated Christmas tree, can be traced all the way back to Germany in the Middle Ages. In Ukraine, people decorate their Christmas trees with artificial spider’s-web ornaments, as spiders' webs are considered to be good omens in Ukrainian culture! In 1974, KFC Japan created its ‘Kentucky for Christmas’ campaign, and to this day, eating food from KFC for Christmas dinner is still a big Christmas tradition in Japan!

Read through our Christmas traditions article to gain some more festive knowledge, and wow your friends and family at the Christmas dinner table with awesome facts about the wacky and wonderful Christmas traditions found around the globe! We’d also love to hear about your own special Christmas traditions, so feel free to leave a comment underneath the article if you’d like to share them.

It's National Ugly Sweater Day!

Friday, Dec 17th, 2021

'Tis the season to rock some ugly sweaters! It's time to dig that – beautifully – ugly Christmas sweater out of the back of your wardrobe, and get ready to have a good ol’ time! Ditch your serious self for the day, and embrace this fun Christmas tradition with your friends and family.

National Ugly Sweater Day is an unofficial holiday that began in 2002. The ‘ugly Christmas sweater’ itself is associated with the heavy-knit sweaters from the ‘80s that had super colorful and tacky Christmas prints and designs. Think reindeer, baubles, sparkles, and glitter! If you’d like to take part in this tradition, then all you need to do is wear your best ugly Christmas sweater. People often choose to raise funds for charities in their workplaces, schools, and colleges on this day, and even pets can take part! With so many people now taking part in this tradition, from 2012 to 2015 the ugly sweater industry grew by 200%!

So while you may not have a true vintage ugly Christmas sweater from the ‘80s, don’t worry! At Zazzle, we offer hundreds of awesome ugly Christmas sweaters inspired by this time period, featuring hilarious phrases and motifs, and you can even customize them. Also, if you’d like to see our top DIY tips on taking your ugly sweaters to the next level, check out our "How to Make Ugly Christmas Sweaters" article!

New Year's Cheers!

Thursday, Dec 16th, 2021

In just a few weeks, we’ll be stepping into a brand new year. Do you have any New Year's traditions? Will you be sending out New Year’s cards to your loved ones? Have you thought about your New Year's resolutions? Many people view a new year as a chance to start afresh, make goals, and try new things.

Did you know that civilizations have been celebrating the start of each new year for over four millennia? The first documented New Year’s celebration took place in March 4,000 years ago in ancient Babylon, after the first new moon following the vernal equinox. In 46 BCE, the Roman emperor Julius Caesar made January 1st the start of the new year after establishing the Julian calendar. Different cultures around the world now have unique ways of ringing in the year ahead: in Brazil, they wear white to bring luck and prosperity in the coming year, and in Spain, people eat 12 grapes (one for each month of the year) when the clock strikes 12!

Although different cultures have unique ways of celebrating the new year, they all share something in common: sending New Year’s greetings and well wishes! To see our wide range of New Year’s greeting cards and view your options, we recommend using our Holiday Card Maker. Upload your photos and add your text, and you’ll be shown thousands of personalized New Year’s card templates, made by you and for you! And if you're looking for some inspiration on how to compose your New Year's greetings, check out our "Happy New Year Quotes & Messages for 2022” article!

Suits You to a Tea

Wednesday, Dec 15th, 2021

Happy International Tea Day!

Or is it?

As one of the most popular drinks in the world (second only to water), and as a beverage with a history that dates back to ancient China, it’s not surprising that tea has not one but TWO holidays. As of 2019, the U.N. has designated May 21st as International Tea Day, but since 2005, it’s taken place on December 15th. If you’re the kind of tea drinker that’d be happy to celebrate it twice, however, then here’s some interesting trivia!

The origins of tea are TRULY legendary. Over 4000 years ago, the mythical Chinese Emperor Shennong was apparently visiting a remote area under his rule. While his servants set up a pot of water to boil over a fire, some leaves from a nearby tree blew into the pot, creating an aromatic concoction that the Emperor then sampled. According to legend, this was the first cup of tea; but early references to tea do occur in ancient Chinese texts around 350 A.D., suggesting that the drink DID originate in China.

Tea spread to the west throughout the 16th and 17th century, and was extremely popular by the time of the Boston Tea Party in 1773. In 2019, as they moved International Tea Day to May 21st, the General Assembly of the U.N. re-emphasized the importance of tea in the economy of developing countries, and sought to “promote and foster collective actions to implement activities in favor of [its] sustainable production.” With that ultimate goal in mind, it’s time to observe the holiday itself: raise a steaming mug of tea to your lips and browse our “Best Holiday Gifts for the Tea Lovers” article, right here on Zazzle Ideas!

Holiday Hassle

Tuesday, Dec 14th, 2021

Keeping your cool when the weather gets cold is not easy. According to a survey conducted by Very Well Mind.com, almost 80% of us admit to feeling some level of stress during the holidays, whether it’s to do with purchasing gifts, cooking roast dinners, or spending more time than usual with your family. There’s also that nagging feeling that you didn’t get everything you needed at the grocery store… But what could you be missing? Hmm.

With that in mind, it’s important to practice self-care during the holidays – perhaps more so than any other time of the year. For example, Max Living suggests that you delegate responsibilities: ask your children to help with setting the table, or your spouse for help with wrapping gifts. Meanwhile, Tiny Buddha advises that you manage your expectations with the following mantra: “There is no such thing as a perfect holiday.” Finally, we at Zazzle recommend that you spend as much time in your own company around Christmas as you do with your friends and family. Set time aside to read or meditate as part of a ‘cooldown’ period, and you’ll feel re-energized for your next social outing.

By eating well, sleeping well, and exercising, you’ll ensure you’re in the best shape of your life this holiday season. If you still need more tips, our article on “How to Throw a Stress-Free Holiday Party” might be useful. We’ve also made shopping online even easier this year and have created a number of ‘gift guides’ to talk you through some of our favorite products. Click on the thumbnail that matches the recipient you’re stuck on, and you’re halfway there!

Life Is Like a Box of Cacao Beans

Monday, Dec 13th, 2021

"What’s that scrumptious, mouth-watering smell? Why, it’s December 13th, or National Cocoa Day, when we celebrate the rich flavor of the cocoa bean (as well as its many by-products)!

Though we refer to the powder or butter as cocoa powder and cocoa butter, the primary ingredient, sourced largely in West Africa and South America, is the cacao bean, the seed of the cacao tree. Supposedly the difference in spelling is due to an error originally made by English importers in the 18th century, but the misspelling was popularized as it was easier to pronounce. From these beans, chocolate can be made – it takes approximately 400 beans to make one pound – and hot chocolate can also be made from the beans when they’ve been fermented, dried, roasted, and ground into cocoa powder.

You can participate in National Cocoa Day by brewing yourself some hot chocolate in a custom mug, or you can read more fun facts about cocoa in Foodimentary’s “Five Things to Know about Cocoa” article!"

Read, Read, as Fast as You Can!

Sunday, Dec 12th, 2021

In 2013, the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas built what would become the world’s largest gingerbread house. Consisting of 35.8 million calories and covering an area of 2520 square feet (almost the size of a tennis court), Guinness quickly awarded the club a World Record, unseating the previous holders in Bloomington, Minnesota. Built to raise funds for a trauma center at the regional St. Joseph’s Hospital, the general manager of the club, Bill Horton, admitted that “[w]e think big and we are competitive.

Building gingerbread houses is a serious business, then, and especially so on December 12th: National Gingerbread House Day! In 17th-century Europe, gingerbread couldn’t be baked by simply anyone; only those of a specific profession could bake it, and it was often sold outside churches or used as a religious offering. It almost approached an art form, as gingerbread makers would depict contemporary events – such as the advent of a new ruler, or the ruler's spouse and children – in gingerbread. It’s also said that the tradition of gingerbread houses spread to the U.S. with the Grimm Brothers’ story of “Hansel and Gretel,” where two siblings come across a witch’s cottage built entirely out of confectionery.

We don’t make gingerbread at Zazzle – and certainly not on the scale they do in Bryan, Texas! – but we do have thousands of gingerbread-themed gifts available this holiday season. If you’d prefer a more er, digestible activity, however, then Foodside has recommendations for places to and things to eat in its “Tastiest Way to Celebrate National Gingerbread House Day” article. The whole holiday sounds yummy to us!

‘Appy Holidays!

Saturday, Dec 11th, 2021

It’s hard to believe, but ‘apps’ – an abbreviation of the word ‘applications’ – are not even 20 years old! During the work day, we use them to complete work and communicate with each other; at home, we use them to stream content or send photos; and every day, more and more apps are being developed, whether they’re related to news, education, sports, or gaming. Apps have come a long way in a short space of time, and that’s why C.J. Thompson, of Platinum Edge Media, christened December 11th ‘National App Day’ in 2017!

Of course, the history of applications does go back a little further. Applications are essentially programs: they’re pieces of software that we use to navigate mobile devices, and we download them – billions of times – on Android and iOS devices every year. In 1983, Steve Jobs envisioned an ‘App Store,’ or a database where software could be purchased over the phone, and the Play Store and Apple Store are contemporary manifestations of that original idea.

National App Day is a day on which we celebrate the benefits of applications, and the positive impact they can have on our everyday lives. If you’d like to show your love for apps this December, you could cite your favorite app online with the #NationalAppDay hashtag, or you could download our very own Zazzle app! Through its interface, you’ll be able to design products, place orders, learn about exclusive discounts, and even collaborate with professional LIVE designers on a project! Finally, you can learn some extremely interesting facts about how we use apps on Smarter Search’s article on the subject

And the Winner Is…

Friday, Dec 10th, 2021

By the time you read this, this year’s Nobel Prizes may already have been awarded in Stockholm, Sweden. Widely regarded as one of the world’s most iconic and prestigious awards, 2021 marks 120 years since the inception of the prize: December 10th, 1901, was the date on which the first five prizes were awarded, and was the 5th anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.

In 1895, Nobel, a chemist, and engineer, had specified that, following his death, his vast fortune be “annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind.” As Nobel had invented dynamite and other explosives, it’s said that he may have set up the fund to atone for his role in creating inventions with destructive potential. Prizes were to be awarded in five categories (Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, and Peace), and a sixth category, in Economic Sciences, was introduced in 1969 by the Bank of Sweden.

This year, several new awardees join the ranks of Albert Einstein and Marie Curie, William Faulkner and W.B. Yeats, Nelson Mandela, and Mother Teresa. With over 6000 submissions every year, and between 100-250 nominees on the shortlist, the decision wasn’t easy, but if you’d like to learn more about the winners’ contributions, you can read about them on the official website of the Nobel Foundation

Season’s Greeting Cards!

Thursday, Dec 9th, 2021

The thought of Christmas cards strewn around every corner of the house – lined up along the mantle or hung like bunting across a door frame – is a nostalgic memory for many. It’s little surprise that Christmas cards are a time-honored tradition, given that they were invented 170 years ago. In 1843, civil servant Henry Cole devised a way of responding to his seasonal post en masse: he recruited his friend, J.C. Horsley, to design a cozy illustration of a family celebrating Christmas at a table, and then Cole printed a thousand copies of the artwork on stiff cardboard. Accompanied with space for the recipient’s name and a generic greeting, Cole had sent the world’s first Christmas cards, and in 2001, a card from this initial batch sold for £22,250.

National Christmas Card Day, which takes place today celebrates the ritual of writing, sending, and receiving cards. But if you’d like to design cards too, like Cole and Horsley, then our Holiday Card Maker tool will provide a showcase of your photos, greetings, and names on our wide range of Christmas cards.

Pens at the Ready...

Tuesday, Dec 7th, 2021

Dearest Zazzlers,

We hope Today’s Moment finds you well. T’is not long now until Christmas, but we’re writing instead to inform you of the arrival of another joyous occasion. We suggest you unsheathe your favorite pen, grab some paper, and get ready to write, because it’s time to celebrate and rediscover a lost art! That’s right, today is National Letter Writing Day!

“To write is human, to receive a letter: Divine!” – Susan Lendroth

In the year 2021, with so many faster means of communication available to us, people rarely sit down to pen letters anymore. However, there are many good reasons to continue the tradition of letter writing. For a start, as the above quote suggests, receiving a letter is exciting—especially nowadays when it’s such a rare occurrence. It also requires greater effort to write and send a letter than a text, an instant message, or an email, and this makes them more meaningful to the recipient. Letters are tangible too, so they make for wonderful keepsakes and mementos of your relationship.

Writing letters can be beneficial to the author as well—especially those looking to improve their powers of expression. Greater care must be taken when handwriting a letter, due to the lack of a handy delete button, and the writer must focus. It is therefore a slower, more conscious, more mindful form of writing that promotes creativity, self-reflection, and deep thought.

If it’s been a while since you’ve written a letter, now’s a good time to reacquaint yourself with the age-old practice. You can find stationery and pens here on Zazzle!

Sincerest regards,

Zazzle

Time for Some Disney Classics...

Monday, Dec 6th, 2021

Yesterday, December 5, was the birthday of Walt Disney. Today, however, is yet another day for celebrating one of the most influential men in the history of animation, cinema, and entertainment. It’s the first Monday of December, and that means it’s Walt Disney Day!

The origins of Walt Disney Day are unclear, but it’s an unofficial celebration that seems to be of fan creation. Whatever its origins, we’re happy to take it as an excuse to revisit some of the classic Disney movies made during Walt’s lifetime. That list starts with Disney’s first fully animated feature-length film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and includes family favorites such as Pinocchio, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and 101 Dalmatians. The last movie that Walt Disney himself produced was the roaring success that was Mary Poppins, but he was also involved in the development of The Jungle Book, The Happiest Millionaire, and Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day prior to his death in 1966. You can find these classic movies and many more on Disney+.

With Christmas just around the corner, it’s also a great time to browse our incredible selection of officially licensed Disney merchandise, which includes a wide variety of products featuring your favorite characters—both classic and modern! With that, we wish you a magical and very happy Walt Disney Day!

Celebrations Are Afoot!

Saturday, Dec 4th, 2021

Did you know that the oldest surviving pair of socks was made somewhere between 250 and 420 AD? Yes, while most of us struggle to keep a pair intact for more than a few wash cycles, this duo managed to stay together for a millennia and a half before they were excavated in Egypt at the end of the 19th century! The socks, which have a divided toe and were designed to be worn with sandals (the height of cool, both then and now), are today housed at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

That might seem like a random fact with which to begin Today’s Moment, but it won’t seem so random when you learn what day it is. Celebrations are afoot, folks, because today is National Sock Day!

Started by clothing brand Pair of Thieves in 2016, National Sock Day was part of a charity program that saw the company donate socks for every use of the hashtag #nationalsockday on social media. Though the terms of their initiative have changed National Sock Day has become a permanent fixture on the calendar.

Happy Birthday, Archers!

Thursday, Dec 2nd, 2021

If your mood has been buoyed somewhat inexplicably over the last couple of weeks, you might be feeling the optimistic energy that’s been flowing since November 22 and the beginning of another Sagittarius season!

A fire sign ruled by the planet Jupiter and symbolized by the archer, Sagittarius is most often associated with adventurous behaviors, outgoing personalities, and boundless positivity. In the aftermath of the sometimes intense and introspective Scorpio season, and with the colder, darker, winter months laying ahead of us, Sagittarius season can provide a fun little interlude for those willing to embrace its optimism.

So how can you best enjoy this season? Sagittarians love to explore, and with more opportunities to travel opening up, now might be a good time to take a little trip. Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic isn’t over quite yet, so avoid the famous risk-taking attitude of the Sagittarius and take all necessary precautions whilst traveling. If you’d like to wish a favorite archer in your life a happy season or birthday, check out this list of great gifts for Sagittarians
