The Open Has Opened!

Our excitement levels are way above baseline right now. In fact, we feel like causing a bit of a racket, because we’re so pumped that the U.S. Open Tennis Championships is underway once again!
The U.S. Open started life as the U.S. National Championship all the way back in 1881. That first tournament was played at the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island. Over the years, however, the competition has continuously evolved. The championship took place at a number of different venues between 1881 and 1977, before finally settling into its current venue at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens, New York in 1978. The playing surface has also changed several times, with the tournament initially taking place on grass courts before making a brief change to clay in 1975. Since the move to Flushing Meadows in ’78, all games have been played on acrylic hardcourt surfaces. The National Championship officially became the U.S. Open in 1968, when professionals were first allowed to compete. Ironically, it was a then-amateur by the name of Arthur Ashe who won the first men’s singles tournament of the so-called ‘Open Era.’ In doing so, he became the first black man to win a major men’s singles championship. Today, many of the U.S. Open’s biggest matches take place at a stadium bearing the great man’s name.

Realistically, do we need an excuse to head to the beach and soak up some sunlight? Today, August 30th, celebrates National Beach Day and we certainly think everyone should seas this day. From catching a few waves surfing and improving the tan lines on sun loungers, to making sand castles with the kids, there are many ways to enjoy this sun-filled day.
Beaches have been around for a very long time, so why do we have a special day to celebrate them? It was decided in 2014 that this day would be significant in terms of raising awareness about safety and recognizing the changes we must make in order to keep our coastlines clean. If you would like to help with tackling climate change or water sustainability, you can contact an array of organizations such as the Nature Conservancy.
Our inner happiness depends on finding ways to find balance in our lives. It’s time to create some new wholesome habits! Visit your nearest coastline or lake for some sea air or relaxing meditation. Grab your cool beach towels and water bottles to stay hydrated. Don’t just sand there, contact your friends and make the most of it!

If you’re someone who goes bananas for bananas, today is your day! It’s August 27, and apparently, that means its National Banana Lovers’ Day! Join us as we peel back the outer layers of this holiday to reveal more about the humble banana... and the people who love them.
Actually, there are a bunch of days on the calendar that celebrate the banana. Just two days ago on August 25, in fact, it was National Banana Split Day. While April 19 is National Banana Day. But make no mistake, we get why there’s so much love for the banana. After all, it’s a delicious fruit packed with fiber, potassium, manganese, vitamin B6, and vitamin C. It’s also incredibly versatile, as it’s a tasty snack when eaten alone, a sweet topping for your breakfast oatmeal, a wonderful ingredient in a smoothie, and a great addition to a wide variety of desserts. Today, the most commonly eaten banana is called the Cavendish, with a 2019 TIME article estimating that 99% of all exported bananas are of this variety. Terrifyingly, though, some experts predict that, like its popular predecessor the Gros Michel, the Cavendish might soon become extinct at the hands of a destructive fungus.

Throw a Dog a Bone!

If you’re a regular reader of Today’s Moment, you’ll be well aware that we love our furry friends here at Zazzle. In March we marked National Puppy Day, and just last month we told you all about National Kitten Day. Well, today, we’d like to acknowledge yet another very important pet-themed occasion, because August 26 is National Dog Day.
While National Dog Day provides us all with another good excuse (as if we needed one) to spoil our doggos with walkies, belly rubs, treats, and gifts, it’s actually more about raising awareness of those unfortunate animals who don’t have anyone to spoil them. Colleen Paige started National Dog Day back in 2004, choosing August 26 because it was the date that her family adopted their first dog, the aptly named “Sheltie,” from a local animal shelter. One of Colleen’s main aims was to “galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year.” According to the ASPCA, that number is estimated to be a staggering 3.1 million on average.
If you’d like to get involved and help to bring that number down, the most significant thing you can do, of course, is to adopt. If you’re thinking of bringing a dog into your life in the near future, consider taking a trip to a shelter rather than a pet store. We just know you’ll find the perfect pet and fall madly in woof, err, we mean, love! Yesterday, we gave you some advice about how to make the most of the last few days of this glorious summer. One of our recommendations was to spend more time in nature by, among other things, taking in a camping trip or going backpacking. Camping and backpacking are terms that are often used somewhat interchangeably, but there are significant differences between the two. Most forms of camping, for example, allow a greater number of home comforts and are less physically demanding than backpacking. The Last Days of Summer

You may have come across the above line, taken from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s poem “Merlin’s Song,” a time or two online. It’s become a sort of ode to summertime and a popular inspirational quote, serving as a reminder to us all to seize these sunny days by taking to the outdoors. If you’re looking for some outdoor activities to help you make the most of the final days of summer, look no further, because we’ve got some great ideas right here!
Summer staples such as camping, backpacking, hiking, bike-riding, and swimming in the sea or down at the lake are all excellent choices. However, getting outdoors doesn’t have to be so energetic or physical. For those who need some sunkissed R & R, taking a picnic basket to the park or reading a book at the beach might be better options. Virgo season falls annually from August 22 to September 22, as the sun makes its trip through the sixth sign of the zodiac. Virgos are ruled by the planet Mercury, and are widely thought to be hardworking, dedicated, helpful, and organized!
In Greek mythology, the sign of Virgo is often represented by Astraea, who was the daughter of Zeus and Themis. Virgo, regarded as the goddess of innocence and purity, was thought to have lived amongst us during the Golden Age of man. However, when humanity started to descend into corruption, she fled, and her departure is said to have marked the end of Paradise on Earth. Virgo is also often associated with the concepts of fertility and harvest. The constellation of Virgo lies in the southern sky between Leo and Libra, at about 13 hours right ascension and 2° south declination.

Bao, Oh Bao, What a Beautiful Day!

You may not know that today is National Bao Day. In fact, you might not even know what a bao is at all. Well, if you don’t, allow us to fill you in.
Not many dishes can claim an origin story quite like the bao. According to legend, these delicious, yeast-leavened buns were created by a famous 2nd-century Chinese statesman and military strategist by the name of Zhuge Liang to save his men from an unpleasant deity with a rather macabre demand. The deity had refused to grant Liang passage across the river she was guarding unless she was given the heads of 50 troops (yikes!). However, Liang was able to trick this unreasonable character by presenting her with 50 large head-shaped buns. These buns were given the name ‘Mantou,’ which means ‘Barbarian’s head,’ but later the filled variety would come to be called bao or baozi.
Perhaps that story isn’t much of an appetite stimulator, but we assure you that the bao is a delicious treat. Bao buns can be stuffed with a variety of different fillings, from savory bbq pork, beef, or tofu, to sweet chocolate, caramel, or custard. You’ll find them at Chinese and Asian street food restaurants across the country. Respecting Our Elders

On August 19, 1988, and as part of Proclamation 5847, President Ronald Reagan announced that “[t]hroughout our history, older people have achieved much for our families, our communities, and our country. That remains true today, and gives us ample reason this year to reserve a special day in honor of the senior citizens who mean so much to our land.” Henceforth, August 21 was designated as National Senior Citizens Day, and has been, since 1988, an opportunity to celebrate the elderly people in our lives.
The U.S.-based National Senior Citizens Day is sometimes confused with the International Day of Older Persons, introduced by the United Nations on 14 December 1990 (and which takes place annually on October 1). However, while these are distinct events, their aims are largely the same: to highlight the important role of senior citizens in society, to combat ageism, and to address concerns relating to the physical and mental health of older people. Much of the world is now home to an aging population, due to improved healthcare and a higher standard of living. The U.S. Census Bureau even predicts that there will be 78 million people over the age of 65 in the U.S. by 2035 – surpassing the number of the population under 18 for the first time in history.
These changing demographics do present challenges, and thus it’s crucial that we all play a small part in making senior citizens’ lives easier. Why not donate to a local retirement center, volunteer at a nursing home, or simply reach out to your grandparents for a call or visit? They’ll be delighted you popped by; just like we always are, here at Today’s Moments!

Humanitarian Heroes

Today, on World Humanitarian Day, we pay tribute to the thousands of humanitarian workers offering their assistance to vulnerable communities around the world. Over 130 million people worldwide are currently in need of humanitarian relief, whether they’re living in a war-torn country or are suffering the impact of natural disasters.
The United Nations designated August 19 as World Humanitarian Day because of the work of Sérgio Vieira de Mello, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights in 2002 and 2003. The Brazilian diplomat sought to “ensure that those residing in First World countries… gain[ed] a different perspective on [countries in the midst of war]”; he wanted to show that there “[was] more to it than just political conflict and death of combatants.” Keenly aware of the innocent people that were in jeopardy around the world, Vieira de Mello himself became an innocent victim on August 19, 2003, when a bombing attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad cost him and twenty others their lives.
Each year a theme is chosen by the U.N.for World Humanitarian Day – this year’s is #RealLifeHeroes. With the worst of the pandemic hopefully behind us, 2022 is a good opportunity to honor the people – whether they be doctors, nurses, scientists, or shopkeepers – who got us through it. And with many vulnerable countries still in need of the vaccines, medical equipment, and medical personnel needed to combat COVID-19, we must continue to acknowledge and celebrate the people and organizations working to provide that humanitarian relief.

HULK LAUNCH!

Just as Bruce Banner had managed to get his Hulk persona under control, there’s been another green-eyed monster added to the mix. This newcomer is actually Banner’s cousin, defense attorney Jennifer Walters, and with the debut of a new MCU series on Disney+ yesterday, it’s likely that you already know her eponymous alter ego!
She-Hulk has been around since 1980 when the character first appeared in The Savage She-Hulk #1. Created by Stan Lee and John Buscema, She-Hulk is a milder, more rational take on the Hulk, but is no less intimidating, standing at 6’ 7’’. Following a blood transfusion from her cousin Bruce, Walters gained superhuman strength and agility – along with that signature green hue all Hulks share – but continued to represent her clients in court, typically defending other superheroes and mutants caught up in legal battles. The She-Hulk series looks like it’s going to offer us the same mix of courtroom drama and Marvel action, with some fish-out-of-water comedy thrown in for good measure!
Now that you’ve read the brief, we’ll ask you to approach the bench: there’s a whole range of evidence – sorry, customizable She-Hulk merchandise – that we’d like you to testify about. And with another eight episodes of She-Hulk on the way, it looks like the statute of limitations for buying these officially licensed products will run for a while yet…

We are about to inform you of an upcoming operation – one that will require all of your wits and mettle to overcome, and which should be conducted with the utmost delicacy. It’s not all bad, though – at least not once you’ve read our “Top Back to School Supplies for 2022” article. We know that this can be a hectic time for the whole family, and that getting accustomed to a new grade – or even a new school – can be daunting. Take A Walk On The Left Side

Today is International Left Handers Day! This official day aims to honor lefties everywhere, throughout history, pop culture, and of course, in our everyday lives. Left-Handers Day also serves as a way to raise awareness for the struggles that many lefties face in a right-handed world (for example, cutting with most scissors…) So, whether you’re a right-handed person, or a leftie yourself, today’s a great opportunity to brush up on some fabulous left-hander facts!
Did you know that left-handers make up only about 10 percent of the world? Left-handers were even rarer before, with only 2 percent of the population being left-handed in 1860! However, many attribute the increasing number of lefties we see today to the fact that left-handed children are no longer forced to write with their right hands. Back then, left-handedness was believed to be linked with evil and darkness due to religious connotations. Today, there are a few theories as to why people are left-handed in the first place – genetics, environment, and chance – but scientists still cannot pinpoint the exact reason! Studies have shown that if the mother is left-handed, the odds of a child also being left-handed is 3 in 10, and if both parents are left-handed, then the child has a 4 in 10 chance of being left-handed.

Step up and get ready to bat, because today is officially Baseball Fans Day! This national day strives to celebrate the fans of the awesome sport that is baseball. If you’re a baseball fanatic, a casual fan, or would simply like to gain a little more knowledge on the topic, feel free to read on for some interesting facts that’ll really hit a home run! We might even throw in a few curveballs…
Where did baseball come from, exactly? Well, references to games resembling baseball in the United States date all the way back to the 18th century! Historians can pinpoint its most direct ancestors to be two English games: rounders and cricket. By the time of the American Revolution, variations of these two games were being played in schoolyards and college campuses all across the US! Then, in September of 1845, the New York Knickerbocker Baseball Club was founded, with bank clerk Alexander Joy Cartwright coining the set of rules that would form the basis for the modern baseball games we know today. In 1869, Major League Baseball (MLB) was established, and grew into one of the biggest sporting organizations in the entire world. As of today, there are 30 Major League Baseball teams with millions of dedicated fans!
To celebrate Baseball Fans Day, why not get outside and start up a fun game of baseball with your friends and family? Impress your teammates with your very own customized baseball! This day was created in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare to raise awareness of the plight of cats and educate others about how to care for and protect them. We’ve no mixed felines about how amazing kittens and cats are! Although it may seem that dogs are the cutest pets in the house, according to a recent survey, 44% of respondents own at least one cat. Within the same study, a ¼ of people confessed that their cat is their best friend. You also may be surprised to learn that a cat's meow evolved to communicate with humans. I think we can all agree that having their own human language gives them an extra cute factor!

Believe it or not, chocolate chip cookies were actually created by accident! Chocolate bar pieces were added to the cookie mixture with the intention of the chocolate melting. This is how chocolate chip cookies were formed! And to this day, the bestselling chocolate chip cookies are sold by Nestlé Toll House, which is named after the Toll House restaurant where the first chocolate cookie was created. We’d figured it was only right to share the original NESTLÉ Toll House recipe that started it all with you today, on National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day!
Ingredients 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened 3/4 cup granulated sugar 3/4 cup packed brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 large eggs 2 cups (12-oz. pkg.) Nestlé Toll House Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels 1 cup chopped nuts (if omitting, add 1-2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour)
Instructions: Step 1: Preheat the oven to 375° F. Step 2: Combine flour, baking soda, and salt in a small bowl. Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract in a large mixer bowl until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in morsels and nuts. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets. Step 3: Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.

Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can! Chances are you’ve heard of everyone’s favorite neighborhood Spider-Man. In fact, he’s been around since 1962 when he first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15! That means that Spider-Man has been appearing in comics – and spinning webs on the big screen – for 60 years!
Spider-Man paved the way for superheroes. At the time, he was the first teenage superhero, and against all odds, Stan Lee who truly believed in this character released Spider-Man. You can watch Stan Lee provide a detailed speech on the creation of Spider-Man here. It’s believed that Spider-Man is so popular because he faces problems that everyday people could also face, making him more relatable. In an interview with the Chicago Tribune Lee said, “He's the one who's most like me -- nothing ever turns out 100 percent OK; he's got a lot of problems, and he does things wrong, and I can relate to that.”
