JUNE'S MOMENT

Moments of creativity, celebration, trends, and unique occasions. For every day of the week.

Goodness Gracious Great Balls of Fire!

Thursday, June 30th, 2022

When darkness falls tonight, we recommend that you lay a blanket down outdoors and gaze up into the cosmos, because today is National Meteor Watch Day!

Where did National Meteor Watch Day come from? Well, we’d love to regale you with the storied history of the occasion, but there really isn’t much info available about this event. Somewhat fittingly, it seems to have simply fallen out of the clear blue sky! Nevertheless, we think the day is still worth observing because any excuse for a little meteor watching or stargazing is good enough for us. After all, these activities can be wonderful stress relievers, and they provide opportunities for parents to nurture their children’s natural curiosity about, and understanding of, the universe. For best viewing conditions, the Old Farmer’s Almanac recommends that you choose a viewing site as far away from bright lights as possible with an unobstructed view of the sky, you give your eyes at least 20 minutes to adjust to the darkness, and you avoid periods within a few days of a full moon. Thankfully, the June and July full moons fall a couple of weeks either side of National Meteor Watch Day, so your viewing shouldn’t be impaired by moonlight.

While there are no showers expected tonight, an average of six meteors appear in our skies every hour, so there’ll be ample opportunity for you to spot a ‘shooting star.’ If you don’t find one, however, you might have better luck gazing into our collection of astronomy gifts right here on Zazzle!

A Polaroid Moment

Wednesday, June 29th, 2022

Say cheese! You guessed it: today is National Camera Day, so it’s time to set up that tripod, redownload Photoshop, and step into Zazzle’s dark room, as we learn about how the process – and art – of photography developed!

The invention of photography is a complicated story, particularly given the ubiquitousness of cameras in the 21st century (you’re probably reading this Moment on a gadget that can take photos and record videos). The camera obscura, invented in the 11th century, was little more than a dark box with a small pinhole, through which an image could be projected onto another surface. In the early 19th century, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce and Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre produced more advanced ‘cameras’ that could actually generate simplistic prints, but it was not until the 1880s, with George Eastman and Kodak, that cameras became available to the masses.

Now, just a little to the right. Perfect. And now, give me angry, you’re furious! Excellent. And now, you’re curious, intrigued, you don’t know how to spend National Camera Day and you’re looking for ideas. Gorgeous, love it. You’re reading “11 Easy & Alternative Ways to Display Your Photos” and “5 Tips and Tricks for Taking Good Photos on Your Phone,” and you’re in awe. Wonderful, so natural! Do you do this for a living? You should do this for a living!

Is Pi Tau-tally Wrong?

Tuesday, June 28th, 2022

Back on March 14, we celebrated Pi Day, but today, in the interest of impartiality, we would like to mark anti-Pi Day—or Tau Day, as it is more commonly known! What’s this Tau Day all about, you ask? Well, to answer that, we’ll have to delve into a little (gulp!) mathematical theory.

Given the frightening conclusion to the last paragraph, we expect our readership has dwindled, but we promise those of you cautiously reading on that this is an interesting subject. Tau Day, you see, began in 2010 when Michael Hartl, a Ph.D. in theoretical physics, published “The Tau Manifesto.” In this radical publication, Hartl claimed, like a few others before him, that Pi “is a confusing and unnatural choice for the circle constant.” He added that it should be replaced by a constant he called Tau. “The crux of [Hartl’s] argument is that pi is a ratio comparing a circle’s circumference with its diameter, which is not a quantity mathematicians generally care about,” according to the Scientific American. “In fact, almost every mathematical equation about circles is written in terms of r for radius. Tau is precisely the number that connects a circumference to that quantity.”

Tau, then, is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its radius, rather than its diameter, and equals 6.283185… It is for this reason that 6/28, was chosen as Tau Day. If you’d like to learn more, you can visit TauDay.com! And, if you found this interesting, you may also enjoy the range of science-, math-, and tech-related items to be found among our gifts for geeks!

It's a Spectacular Day!

Monday, June 27th, 2022

There’s a good chance that you’ve already celebrated today’s occasion without even realizing it. With the summer in full flow, and the sun hopefully shining on your neck of the woods, you’ve probably already donned a pair of shades at some point today—and there’s no better way than that to mark National Sunglasses Day!

Though sunglasses were first popularized as a glamorous fashion accessory in the 1900s, they’ve actually existed in various forms for centuries. The famous Roman historian Pliny the Elder wrote that the infamous Emperor Nero watched gladiatorial combat in the first century CE through emeralds, perhaps to shield his eyes from the sun’s glare. Around the same time period, however, Nero’s crude yet extravagant approach was surpassed by the inhabitants of arctic North America. The Inuits came up with a form of goggle that is among the earliest examples of UV-protective eyewear. According to Google Arts & Culture, “[t]hese were made from carved driftwood, bone, walrus ivory, or caribou antler that formed a strip worn across the eye area, with thin slits that the wearer could see through.” Yet another early predecessor of modern sunglasses was the Ai Tai, a piece of smoky quartz that was utilized by the Chinese some 900 years ago and was later placed in spectacle frames.

Protective eyewear has continued to evolve over the centuries to give us the effective, stylish, and relatively inexpensive sunglasses we use today. If you’d like to pick yourself up some unique shades for the summer—though, perhaps not as unique as our boy Nero’s—check out our wonderful array of customizable sunglasses today!

Who Wants Cocktails?!!

Sunday, June 26th, 2022

Last month, we provided you with some beer recommendations for BBQ season. Today, however, we’re going to cater to those of you who prefer a fruitier and, some might say, more sophisticated drink to sip in the summer sunshine. So break out your jiggers, shakers, and strainers, and get ready to whip up some tasty summer cocktails!

If you’re looking for cocktails to pair with traditional BBQ food, you have a wealth of options available. The folks at Kerry Food Service assert that bourbon and whiskey complement the smoky flavors of barbecue dishes best, so they recommend a summery bourbon lemonade as an accompaniment to brisket and pulled pork. For pairing with smoky but sweet cookout favorites, they also suggest a spicy margarita topped off with Jalapeno peppers! Yummy! As Michael Chiarello of Food & Wine suggests, you can also bring the smoke directly into your glass by grilling some fruit for a different but delicious sangria. If you’re thinking less about BBQ and more about outdoor brunches, dinner parties, or straight-up cocktail parties, there’s nothing wrong with sticking to versatile summer classics like mojitos, piña coladas, and daiquiris, but you’ll also find some more adventurous recipes in this list of 35 Best Summer Cocktails from Delish—the shark punch is a doozy!

If you like cocktails but you’re not particularly adept with the shaker, you can always order some of our margarita mix to make the job a little easier. And don’t forget a stylish cocktail glass to serve it in! Here’s to a wonderful summer. Cheers!

Paper Anniversary Gift Ideas!

Thursday, June 23rd, 2022

A few days ago, we drew your attention to a recently published piece about “How to Design Your Own Wedding Invitation Suite,” which is just one of many Zazzle Ideas articles offering planning advice for your big day. However, here’s a little reminder to those currently laser focused on wedding preparation that the big days don’t actually end with “the big day,” and our advice doesn’t end there either! Your marriage and your life will be filled with many more wonderful milestones, and we’re happy to offer our ideas about how to celebrate each one.

One significant early milestone to look forward to in your marriage is, of course, the very first wedding anniversary—also known as your ‘paper anniversary.’ Why it’s referred to as the paper anniversary is unclear, but there are several prevalent theories. One theory suggests that paper is symbolic because your marriage is still a blank canvas, while another suggests that a delicate material like paper was chosen to represent the fragility of a bond still in its early stages. Whatever the true reason, paper gifts have become traditional for the occasion, making this a budget-friendly, quirky, and fun anniversary.

If you’re celebrating your first anniversary sometime soon, or you know someone that is, check out our list of “21 Unusual 1-Year Anniversary Gifts” over at Zazzle Ideas. It was written by our guest blogger and founder of MomsLA.com, the wonderful Sarah Auerswald, and it’s brimming with imaginative gift ideas for your spouse or your favorite newlyweds!

Totally Clawsome

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2022

What do Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, and Nicole Scherzinger have in common? Yes, okay, they’re all performers – you’ve got us there. But aside from that: they’ve all been under the zodiac sign of Cancer (June 21 - July 22)!

As with the other eleven signs, the zodiac animal or character is symbolic, and offers a clue as to what a Cancerian’s personality might be like. Like a crab, Cancerians can be secretive and sheltered, loath to reveal their innermost thoughts and feelings. They even tend to appreciate domestic spaces, perhaps like a hermit crab holed up in its shell! However, with time, Cancerians will show that they’re compassionate, creative, and committed; Astrology-Zodiac-Signs.com describes them as “tenacious” and “highly imaginative,” while Cosmopolitan points out that they are empathetic to the point of being “mind readers”!

We all know some June and July babies – some of us even ARE June and July babies. With that in mind, there’s never been a better time to check out our “Great Gift Ideas for Cancers” on Zazzle Ideas, which is brimming with suggestions for those who’ve found themselves in a pinch!

Quantum of Solstice

Tuesday, June 21st, 2022

While you were out basking in the sun today, experimenting with your brand-new yoga mat – see Yesterday’s Moment – you may have noticed that the sun stayed with you a little longer than usual. It’s June 21, you see, and the summer solstice, which means more hours of daylight than any other day of the year!

We’ll try not to overwhelm you with too much scientific information, here. Basically, the solstice marks the point at which the North Pole is at its maximum tilt towards the sun; when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer. This means that the Northern Hemisphere experiences more light, and that the Southern Hemisphere experiences more hours of darkness, because it’s angled away from the sun. The increased sunlight doesn’t mean, however, that the day is any warmer, sadly. As Robert Howell from the University of Wyoming points out to National Geographic, “[i]f you think about turning up an oven, it takes a long time to heat up,” meaning that the hottest days are actually in July and August, when the Earth releases the heat it absorbs around the time of the solstice.

The word ‘solstice’ is derived from Latin (the words sol meaning ‘sun’ and sistere which means ‘to stand still’’). The summer solstice marked the beginning of a new year in some Greek calendars, and the Egyptians built two of the pyramids so that the sun would sit directly between them on the solstice, when viewed from the Great Sphinx. We have a small selection of summer solstice gifts on Zazzle, but our main event this June 21 is the Zazzle Ideas page: check out our “Fun Additions to Your Summer Style” piece for starters!

June 21st is when Summer Solstice begins!

There's Yoga on the Way

Monday, June 20th, 2022

Given their role in peacekeeping, upholding international law, and delivering humanitarian aid, the United Nations may not be the first organization you think of when it comes to the International Day of Yoga, taking place on June 21. Surprisingly, however, it WAS the U.N. that developed the concept: the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, proposed the day in 2014, and it was endorsed by a record 175 member states!

The word ‘yoga’ means ‘to join’ or ‘to unite’ in Sanskrit, and the practice of yoga itself is at least 5,000 years old. Yoga is good for your physical, mental, and spiritual health, and that’s why the theme of 2022 is ‘Yoga for Well Being,’ with previous themes including ‘Yoga for Peace’ and ‘Yoga for Heart.’ Given the events of the past two years – along with the current global situation – it’s never been more important to pursue a relaxation method that boosts your mood, increases your flexibility, and that’s practiced the world over: in 2015, nearly 36,000 people, including many high-profile politicians, participated in a simultaneous 35-minute yoga session, taking place on the inaugural International Day of Yoga.

According to Prime Minister Modi, “[y]oga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition,” and while our yoga mats aren’t ancient or invaluable, they do make incredible gifts. They’re eco-friendly and made of a lightweight material, so you’ll be able to ‘salute the sun’ with ease on the summer solstice.

Celebrating Juneteenth

Sunday, June 19th, 2022

Today we celebrate Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.

The origins of Juneteenth can be traced back to the end of the Civil War. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved African Americans were now free. On June 17th, 2021, President Biden signed an executive order making Juneteenth a federal holiday. Juneteenth is a day to celebrate freedom but also a day to recommit to the fight for justice and equality. A common tradition on Juneteenth is the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation as a way to remember the history of slavery and discrimination and as a call to work together to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to achieve their dreams.

Today, we remember the struggles and sacrifices of those who fought for freedom, and recommit ourselves to the work that remains in order to fully realize the promise of equality for all.

Like Father, Like Sunday

Saturday, June 18th, 2022

As you may have heard – via this very page, even – tomorrow is Father’s Day, and thus it’s time to raise a glass to your dad, granddad, stepdad, bonus dad, or any other person in your life that you’ve always looked up to, frankly. Don’t worry if it slipped your mind, however – or if you missed that particular Moment – because we have a couple of other plans for the big day that don’t require too much pre-planning.

That’s the theme of our “Father’s Day Activities for Every Type of Dad” article, where we list ideas about how to spend June 19. Is your dad the outdoorsy type, always game for adventure? Or is he the bookish tech-head, with his nose constantly buried in a newspaper or gadget? Regardless of what your dad is like, there’s a pastime or activity he’s sure to enjoy in this colorful selection of ideas.

We’d love to hear about what excursions – or alternatively, movie night retreats – you’re scheduling with your dad this year. A Suite Deal!

Friday, June 17th, 2022

When it comes to wedding invitations, we could devote an entire moment of Today’s Moments to covering every aspect of their design. With just a few words to spare, however, we’ll refer you to our most comprehensive discussion on the topic: our “Design Your Own Wedding Stationery & DIY Wedding Invitation Ideas” article, recently published on Zazzle Ideas!

Just like a wedding invitation package itself, this article contains multiple sections to unpack and admire. First, we explain what a wedding stationery suite is: what it comprises, and when you should start working on it. Then we introduce some color and theme tips, along with advice on wording and tone, which will be helpful if your wedding invitation etiquette is proving to be a sticking point. And speaking of ‘sticking points’ – this feature also tells you how to add your own DIY touches to your stationery, whether that means printing them one by one, or adding personalized stamps, embossers, return address labels, and stickers to your cards and envelopes.

“Letterpress wedding invitations and hand-lettered Save the Dates are undeniably elegant, [but] the cost of invitation suites can certainly add up,” according to Brides.com. With that being the case – and with weddings being expensive overall – we think our Zazzlers are in need of some alternatives, and that’s exactly what this article provides. Of course, should you still decide to purchase your invitations the old-fashioned way – with, um, a state-of-the-art website – then we’ll still welcome you with open arms (and maybe even a promo code or two).

Cool Down with Chocolate

Tuesday, June 7th, 2022

What’s the first craving that comes to mind on a hot summer's day? Or in this case, what should come to mind today, June 7th? If you said ice cream – chocolate ice cream to be exact – you’d be right on the ball! To help you celebrate National Chocolate Ice Cream Day, we’ve compiled some fun facts for you to read through before you head out for a scoop!

According to mymochi.com, on average it takes roughly 50 licks to completely finish a scoop of ice cream, chocolate ice cream was invented before vanilla, and ice cream headaches, otherwise known as ‘brain freeze,’ is the outcome of a drop in temperature in your mouth. And if those facts didn’t blow your mind, these probably will: the U.S. has the overall highest consumption rate of ice cream with the average person eating 48 pints of ice cream each year, and the end of World War II was celebrated by eating, you guessed it, ice cream!

Now that you know what’s special about today, you’re probably making plans to head to the grocery store to fetch a tub of ice cream. But in case you’re wondering, here are some other fun ways to celebrate National Chocolate Ice Cream Day! Serve ice cream scoops within your community or at work to raise money for a local charity, host an ice cream party by trying various different flavors (in many variations of chocolate, for example, such as brownie, chocolate chunk, chocolate swirl), or make your own ice cream! Here’s a slightly healthier receipt for dark chocolate ice cream from Jamie Oliver.

D-day - When Allies Invaded

Monday, June 6th, 2022

Today marks 78 years since 156,000 U.S, British, and Canadian allied forces invaded 5 beaches that stretched along France’s Normandy region for what we know as D-Day. This invasion liberated Western Europe and eventually ended World War II with the defeat of Nazi Germany. This is the most substantial invasion ever assembled to date.

Are you curious to know what ‘D’ stands for in D-Day? Well, we’re sorry to let you down, but there isn’t much of a story here: the ‘D’ was simply pulled from the word ‘day,’ and the term ‘D-Day’ meant the day the military operation was to start. It’s predicted that 29,000 Americans lost their lives during the Battle of Normandy, which started on D-Day, and 106,000 were missing or had been wounded. Many of these bodies have never been found, as they were swept out to sea or destroyed in combat. But even to this day, 78 years later, the search continues for the names of bodies buried from this battle.

We’re coming to a time where learning about D-Day first-hand from surviving soldiers is sadly coming to an end. But this generation has set us up by writing books and offering videos that show and talk about the horrific and gruesome battles they faced, in hope that history doesn’t repeat itself. One of these videos can be found here on YouTube, and here are “50 facts and figures about D-Day” that are worth reading.

Only One Earth

Sunday, June 5th, 2022

What is an environment? Well, by definition an environment is the circumstance, objects, or conditions by which one is surrounded. If you're looking around you, wondering whether this Zazzle Moment is going to be about the artwork on your walls or the color of the carpet on the floor, we're sorry for the confusion; instead, it's going to be about your natural environment, specifically the outdoors. So open a window, breathe in some fresh air, and let’s get down to it! After all, it’s World Environment Day!

Try testing your knowledge about our natural environment with this quiz!

So how can you celebrate World Environment Day? Although there are many ways you can partake in WED, here are just a few! Coordinate with your neighborhood, family, and friends to plan a community clean-up, be more cautious when it comes to plastics, opt for reusable bags, or think of clever ways you can reuse containers. To get you started, here’s a great article on reusing and upcycling jars and plastic containers. Other ideas could include walking or biking to work, even if it’s just a couple of days a week, or producing your own vegetables in your own garden.

Lungs of the Earth

Thursday, June 2nd, 2022

The ocean makes up over 70% of the earth's surface and produces more than 70% of the planet’s oxygen! With these fun facts and so many others, it’s no wonder that the month of June is dedicated to the “lungs of the Earth” for National Oceans Month.

National Oceans Month first started when Canada put forth the idea of a ‘World Ocean Day’ on June 8th, 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Although June 8th is still celebrated today as World Ocean Day, the whole of June has also been dedicated to raising awareness and focusing on the dangers the oceans face today. It’s predicted that 8 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean. This plastic eventually breaks down into microplastic which litters the oceans and is ingested by wildlife. It’s important now, more than ever, that we do our part to reduce plastic in our everyday lives.

If you’re wondering what you can do to help save the oceans, nationalgeographic.com has compiled a list of 10 ideas! These include reducing your carbon footprint, using less plastic, and supporting organizations that are taking steps to preserve the oceans, among other ideas. We also recommend that you do your own research on protecting the oceans to make a better environment for all.
