gold tiara Yorkie sewing pattern t-shirt bellyband Fabric
This fat quarter, 28" x 18" is a cut and sew formatted sewing pattern with Kristie Hubler's "Queen of Hearts" gold crown tiara, with formatted scattered repeat pattern to make a Yorkshire terrier t-shirt and bellyband. The bellyband is a wrap that goes around the dog's "training" area to curb accidents and incontinence. Just buy 1/4 yard of white, dancewear stretch nylon from JoAnn Fabrics for the pocket that holds a cut up diaper cloth or maxi pad, and fold the vertical sides in twice, and sew, to make side, finished hems. INSTRUCTIONS FOR SEWING BELLYBAND PATTERNED PANELS: Just cut around the outer, darker gold "seam allowance" of both outer and inner fabric patterns, sew the 3" long by 2" wide velcro, hook on on panel, loop on the other, in the gold translucent area shown, straight stitch 1/16" from outside edge of velcro, then use the zigzag stitch function on your machine, stitch length 0-1, and stitch width 3-5, then stitch around the outer edge at least 4 times. Pin and sew the finished hemmed pocket to the inner panel, centered, along the top and bottom horizontal sides, and then stitch along the left vertical side, THEN stitch down the top and bottom sides of the pocket to the inner panel, stitch along the top and bottom across, but slightly to the outside, on the "gold" seam allowance part to the outside of where the gold "seam allowance" area meets the crown pattern -this is so that the stitch line doesn't show when you sew the panels together (this is optional, as I use it for my solid colored and custom, manufactured pattern fabric that I buy from JoAnn's, for my bellyband panels, so that I know that my white thread doesn't show on say a dark bottomweight or flannel other colored background cotton fabric) - this secures the pocket, leaving an opening on the right for the diaper cloth or pad. Then ... make sure that have your inner and outer fabric panels face each other, inner panel facing up with soft velcro stitched down on the left, and outer panel with hard velcro stitched in place on right side, facing down, pin along vertical sides, and on top and bottom of horizontal sides towards the ends, 3-4 inches from corners, leaving an opening along the top AND bottom horizontal side, centered, wide enough for your hand to slide in and out of the project. Then stitch around the "end caps, where you pinned, leaving an opening at the top and bottom horizontal sides. Back stitch both sides of each corner, for at all 4 corners, and at either ends of the opening, to secure. Also, you may chose to stitch over your first stitch lines, if you feel it will secure the piece (I do, especially when the seam allowance is 1/4" all around the edges, but that's me). Turn your piece out, it's like making a pillow cover, and tuck in the bottom opening's seam allowance, so it looks neat, and closed. Push out your seams, use straight pins if necessary or iron your seams to press them, make sure your 4 corners are all pushed out, use a pointy stylus if necessary (this is why I back stitch my corners, if I didn't back stitch them, when pushing out my seams, after turning the piece inside out - the pointy pen or stylus would poke through the corner lol). After everything looks good, and in place, THEN sew your top opening closed. You can also, sew a finished stitch line 1/16" from the outer edge, press or pin before hand. INSTRUCTIONS FOR T-SHIRT: Cut around the gold outer "seam allowance" that surrounds the crown tiara pattern. Now ... if you don't want the skirt, the squared "skirt" at the bottom, that rests near the tail, the "derrier" area, you don't have to use it, you can cut it off, just leave a 1/2" wide seam allowance to roll under twice, to make a hem use and keep the gold seam allowance at the bottom of the "belly" / "chest" area as a guide. If you choose to keep it, and your Yorkie wants a warm area down there, like my customer did, first, snip away the outer corners at 45 degrees where the bottom of the side "wings" that get sewn together to cover the chest area, where it would meet the "tummy" area, then snip into the inner corner at both sides, at the top of the "skirt" that meets the chest "wings" seam, with the two side bottom chest/tummy horizontal esges' inner corners and bottom skirt plus bottom chest horizontal outer corner edges' snipped, you will turn under twice all horizontal seam allowances under, pin in place. Then along the vertical sides of the skirt's bottom, turn them under twice, and pin. Make sure your skirt's bottom two corners make a nice, mitered, 90 degree turned under corner. This may be a bit tricky to pin and sew, but once you get this sewn, the bottom edges of the chest and 3 sides of the skirt, it will be smooth sailing from there on out. I say that it is tricky, because, what I do is turn the whole main pattern sideways, where the neck area is to the left, and bottom of the skirt's edge is to the right, and then I stitch with a 2-3 straight stitch length along down the bottom chest edge, turn the piece, sew down from the inner corner where the chest "bottom" edge meets the skirt, to the outer edge of the bottom right corner of the skirt, turn piece, then stitch down to the other bottom outer edge of the skirt, turn piece, and sew to other inner corner where the other side of the skirt meets the other bottom chest edge, turn piece, and sew the edge of the other chest edge. NOW, place the panel's design face down, and match the vertical sides of the chest along the seam allowance, pin in place, and sew a straight stitch down, along edge where the crown pattern meets to gold seam allowance line, which should be 1/4" in. THEN, set your machine to the zigzag stitch function, your stitch length to 0-1, stitch width to 3-5, and zigzag stitch down the seam allowance, with the zigzag stitch going over ONLY the gold seam allowance. Trim if need be, but the zigzag stitch acts like a surged edge. Go over the seam again with the zigzag stitch - that way, the seam is secure, and truly resembles a surged edge. You will do the same thing for the top "wings" (they look like wings, angled on the pattern panel, going out on the diagonal, as you can see pictured. Just bring those together, and do the same thing that you did with the bottom chest vertical seam, straight stitch seam allowance edges together, then zigzag stitching down twice. Now, you will join and pin the horizontal edges, the horizontal seam allowances of the top and bottom chest areas, and do the same thing - straight stitch across horizontally (vertically top to bottom, turned on its side, when you sew, of course), then zigzag stitch twice. Your chest area is complete. Now for attaching the neck and two cuff bands to the main piece. First, fold the long, gold strips in half, short tips together, gold facing inside, sew the shorter tips together with a straight stitch, 1/4" seam allowance. Then, fold the long, gold strips in half along the longer sides cut edges gold facing out - this makes a "gold ring", and pin along cut edges together, 4-6 pins across. The longest strip is for the neck, and two, shorter strips are for the arms. Do not turn your main t-shirt panel out, keep it inside facing out. With your folded strip for one arm made into a "gold ring" facing out, take the cut edge and push UP from under the t-shirt pattern's arm hole made, through the hole, so that the arm hole's cut edges all meet up, pin in place around circle opening, straight stitch 1/4" seam allowance from outer, cut edge in, then zigzag stitch the seam allowance, twice, like you did the chest seams. Snip to clean up if necessary. Do that for the other arm cuff, and then the neck cuff. To finish the the neck and arm cuff seams, turn the piece inside out, with the pattern facing out, and straight stitch close to where the seam of each cuff is. Note, if it shows white, use white thread. Always use thread color matching the background color of the fabric panel being stitched, or the dominant color. Just buy a big roll of white thread, Toldi Lock Gutermann's is good, and can be bought at JoAnn's, use a store coupon, or keep an eye out for a sale. Use fabric scissors and a pair of small, pointy, embroidery scissors. Hook and loop, or Velcro brand is available in the 2" wide width at JoAnn Fabrics, with coupons and sales frequent. Just buy a 6" length of 2" wide velcro for this fat quarter project. All in all, if you use sales or coupons, you can spend between $4 - $6 extra for this project, for extra supplies, for the velcro / hook and loop, thread, and stretch nylon. This Queen of Hearts crown tiara, with diamonds and pearls encrusted in a gold crown, is art created by Kristie Hubler, for fabricatedframes.com customer's dog Queenie's fabric photo frame, in October 2001.
